From the author of the Algonquin Quest series comes the story of a secret, female-led group that has sought justice for Indigenous women and children for centuries.

In 1959, an Indigenous boy sits in a café. While he waits for his order, an Indigenous man and woman enter the restaurant. Posing as customers, they attack the owner and cut off his thumbs — retribution for abusing his staff members. This is the Elk Whistle Warrior Society, an organized and relentless group that combines traditional practices with modern methods to fulfill its mission of vigilante justice for Indigenous women and girls.

Decades later, Society representative Cody Maracle (a.k.a. Raven) meets with the prime minister and agrees to work with the government. Raven and her vast network, along with former RCMP officer Blackbird, travel throughout Turtle Island to capture kidnappers, human traffickers, and murderers. Part adventure story, part social commentary, The Elk Whistle Warrior Society provides a captivating portrayal of the strength, leadership, and determination of Indigenous women.

I love all the strong connections to our long cultural roots, and the accuracy of all that.

Praise for The Elk Whistle Warrior Society

“I love all the strong connections to our long cultural roots, and the accuracy of all that.” — Tantoo Cardinal, Actor, Member of the Order of Canada

“Students will clamour for a copy of this book. It entwines a “hands back, hands forward” way of knowing for Indigenous youth (Archibald & Parent, 2019). The fast-paced, unrelenting pursuit, featuring aggressive accountability of those who harm vulnerable Indigenous women and girls, makes for a gripping novel! Rick’s portrayal of the strength and leadership of Indigenous women is bold and empowering.” — Kae Blancher, Principal, Frontier Collegiate Campus, Frontier School Division, Treaty 5 Territory, Cranberry Portage, Manitoba

The Elk Whistle Warrior Society is an exciting, exhilarating and unpredictable adventure with super-heroines like no other. The story is fiction, but many similar events have tragically occurred. It is time to become aware and cheer and support the empowering women and their amazing guardians and culture. . . . “Listen and Learn,” as Angry Warrior says in the novel.” — Margaret Carr-Braint, Retired Registered Nurse, Belleville, Ontario

“What an amazing tribute to the history of Indigenous peoples and the strength of the women. Your portrayal of their belief in restoring justice and making things right for those who can’t do that for themselves is powerful. The Elk Whistle Warrior Society is such a treasure to read!” — Michele Cole, Writer & Believer of Learning from History, Retired Social Justice Worker, Napanee, Ontario

“This book is a must-read that brings awareness to the need to provide safety to all women, especially Indigenous women. Intelligent and strong, these selfless warrior women get the job done that no one is brave enough to tackle. Kind, yet merciless, they are out to save what they value most, their way of life. This book confronts the reader, to challenge oneself and act on change. . . . An original and captivating plot, the Elk Warrior women, with all their compassion and ferocity, will keep you up all night. One could only hope that these warriors of justice exist in our society today.” — Nancy C. Simard, multi-media artist and writer, Kingston, Ontario
