Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Yaʿqūbī was a Muslim imperial official and polymath of the third/ninth century. On the occasion of the publication of The Works of Ibn Wāḍiḥ al-Yaʿqūbī. An English translation, edited by Matthew S. Gordon, Chase F. Robinson, Everett K. Rowson, and Michael Fishbein (Leiden, 2017-2018), Brill is making the classic Arabic edition of al-Yaʿqūbī’s Taʾrīkh by M.Th. Houtsma (2 vols., 1883) available in paperback for the first time.
Volume 2 covers the period from the rise of Islam to the first years of the Reign of Caliph al-Muʿtamid ʿAlā ’llāh (r. from 256/870). The text ends c. 259/872-873. The current volume offers the Arabic text only. The English translation is found in Volume 3 of The Works of Ibn Wāḍiḥ al-Yaʿqūbī.

Martijn Theodoor Houtsma (1851-1943), invariably referred to as M. Th. Houtsma, was a Dutch orientalist. He was a fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a leading expert on the history of the Seljuks. He remains best known for his work as editor of the first edition (1913–38) of Brill´s Encyclopaedia of Islam.
