The volume presents a wide selection of texts from the Judeo-Arabic journalism of Tunisia and Tripolitania (Libya), transcribed in Arabic script, together with English translations and commentaries. An extended historical introduction traces the emergence of Eastern Maghrebi Judeo-Arabic press against the background of merchant epistles, manuscript rentals, and religious translations, and outlines the principle actors, events, and cultural and political trends that contributed to its emergence, flourishing, and decline. The corpus assembled uniquely for this volume represents a hitherto underexamined chapter in the history of Arabic dialect writing, and yields important new insights into scholarly discussions on vernacularity and vernacular literary cultures, language ideologies, global translation movements, Jewish-Muslim relations, multiple modernities, nationalism, colonialism, and sundry other issues.
