The Kokani Muslims: Mausim’s Children speaks of the unexplored world of a littoral community whose story began 1,300 years ago when Arab and Persian merchants riding the mausim (monsoon) came to the Konkan to trade. Welcomed by the rulers of the region they settled here and their compatriots came as refugees in times of persecution, marking the genesis of the Kokani Muslim community. As locals embraced their faith and Muslim migrants joined them, the community grew, bringing about a composite culture. Today, about a quarter of a million Kokanis are spread across the globe, with the majority in India. The book also profiles some unsung Kokani personalities.
