A Modern Guide to Writing for Effective Learning Experiences

Effective, purposeful writing is the engine that drives great learning experiences and shapes the quality of learner engagement and knowledge retention. If you’re an instructional designer, collaborating with artificial intelligence (AI) will take you only so far. What you really need is advice from trusted colleagues who know how to communicate complex ideas and bring training to life. A writing mini-course in one volume, The Language of Learning has you covered.

In answer to a longtime need in the L&D community, Hadiya Nuriddin has produced the first book to focus exclusively on the art and science of writing for instructional design. Nuriddin and her expert contributors examine the essentials that every L&D professional needs to master:

  • Clarity and brevity
  • Rhetorical strategies
  • Connection with a diverse audience
  • Responsible use of AI tools

This book also dives into how to improve the L&D deliverables that matter most, including learning objectives, facilitator guides, participant materials, scripts for audio and video, assessments, and technical content. Each chapter offers practical techniques to ensure consistency, accessibility, and quality across multiple learning products plus downloadable tools—such as templates, worksheets, and checklists—that allow you to act on what you’ve learned immediately.

The Language of Learning blends timeless writing principles and creative approaches in a practical manual that every learning designer can use to sustain the essential human connection with learners that is more important than ever.
