The purpose of this volume is to take stock of what has been achieved in and look forward to new directions for the study of indigenous America. The book is organised around the theme of cultural and linguistic diversity and the three pillars of research promoted by the Leiden-based Centre for Indigenous America Studies (CIAS): reconstructing, describing, and preserving diversity. The first part of the book features interviews with prominent Leiden and Leiden-related scholars who have helped to create and shape the field of Indigenous American studies worldwide. The second part of the book consists of over 25 contributions by different authors that relate to one of the three pillars.
