This book is a comprehensive history of the global political economy of Haiti from the 1980s through the current rise of criminal gangs. It explains the failure of Haiti’s long-term socioeconomic development, over the course of the past four decades, and the way that foreign and Haitian elites have contributed to the immiseration of the country. The book carefully maps out the consequences of centuries of plunder of Haiti, but also offers hope for far-reaching economic, political, and social change that is necessary to reverse these dynamics.
