Set in the post-college purgatory of Boca Raton, Florida, a young woman works with her overbearing mother at Dillard's until heaven comes in the form of a boy named Trevor who could lead to her next mental breakdown or a future out of Florida.
Stephanie Shiman returns to her hometown, looking to recover from a mental health crisis before deciding what’s next in life after college. She takes a job in the stockroom of Dillard's alongside her mother, whose charisma and sales prowess light up the showroom floor. While her mom thrives on connection and performance, Stephanie seeks quiet and solitude, grappling with guilt, the echoes of her parents’ divorce, and her own unfulfilled ambitions as a writer.
Her world shifts when Trevor, a charming but reckless drifter, enters the scene. Stephanie is tempted by the escape and romance he offers despite it threatening to pull her further away from her dreams. As she navigates desire, obligation, and the lingering pressures of family, Stephanie is forced to face the questions at the heart of adulthood.
The Style of Your Life is a tender yet sharply observed coming-of-age story that explores the complex bond between mother and daughter and the courage it takes to forge one’s own path while walking the tight-rope of self destruction.
Praise for The Brittanys
"Ackerman locates an achingly realistic but unsentimentally clear-eyed portrait of the youthful relationships that end but are never truly over. A raw, funny and bittersweet novel about the awkward tenderness of adolescence." —Alice Martin, Shelf Awareness (starred review)
"If you’ve run out of episodes of Pen15 or can't stand another binge-watch of Gossip Girl, this is a perfect palate cleanser." —Rebecca Munro, Bookreporter
"I found every page of this book to be the perfect mix of entertaining, satisfying, questioning, and moving. It glows with Ackerman's love for her characters. I could have stayed inside it forever." —Sarah Gerard, author of True Love
