The Didache, likely composed in the mid-first to mid-second century CE in an unknown location, is important for several reasons. One reason is that this peculiar text challenges our modern categories of the ancient Mediterranean. For instance, the Didache cannot be neatly labelled as “Jewish,” “Christian,” or “Jewish-Christian.” Another reason for the importance of the Didache is the unusual amount of detail regarding ritual prescriptions.
