After the Black Death of 1349 in England, wage labour relations replaced feudal bondage to become the dominant form of employing labour in agriculture and construction. The statutes, setting maximum wage day-rates until the Statute of Artificers in 1563, are a contemporary testimony to the development of wage labour relations. Set in the context of the study of global labour relations, the book provides detailed analyses of the petitions prompting labour legislation, the statutes themselves, and the conditions of wage earners, working or not working, including their wages, gender and age discrimination, apprenticeships, employers, conspiracies, and justice enacted.
