The United States in Crisis: Citizenship, Immigration, and the Nation State argues that to preserve our freedom Americans must mount a defense of the nation state against the progressive forces who advocate for global government. The Founders of America were convinced that freedom would flourish only in a nation state. A nation state is a collection of citizens who share a commitment to the same principles. Today, the nation state is under attack by the progressive Left, who allege that it is the source of almost every evil in the world.

“I first heard Ed Erler explain, succinctly, the foundation and meaning of American citizenship when I was a student. Since then I've studied, and learned from, all of Ed's writings on the subject. This is not just Ed's definitive statement on the subject; it is THE definitive statement on the subject. Case closed.”

Michael Anton, lecturer and research fellow at Hillsdale College, Washington, D.C., senior fellow at Claremont Institute, former national security official in the Trump administration, and author of The Stakes: America at the Point of No Return

Edward J. Erler is a senior fellow of the Claremont Institute and professor emeritus of political science at California State University, San Bernardino. He is the author of The American Polity: Essays on the Theory and Practice of Constitutional Government and co-author of The Founders on Citizenship and Immigration. Dr. Erler was a member of the California Advisory Commission on Civil Rights from 1988-2006 and served on the California Constitutional Revision Commission in 1996. He has testified on two occasions before the House Judiciary Committee on the issue of birthright citizenship and on voting rights and other civil rights issues before the Senate Judiciary Committee. In 2005, he traveled to Iraq to meet with members of the Constitution Draft Commission. Dr. Erler earned a B.A. from San Jose State University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in government from Claremont Graduate School.
