Recent years have seen a troubling rise in the influence of misogynist online communities. These “manosphere” groups, including incels, men’s rights activists, MGTOW (Men Going Their Own Way), and pickup artists, are united around negative attitudes toward women and backlash against feminism. Misogyny also spreads through other online subcultures, such as gaming, and through chauvinist far-right movements. There are even female-dominated antifeminist communities, most notoriously tradwives. Misogynist language and narratives increasingly permeate online spaces—and in some cases, digital hatred spills over into physical violence.

They Hate Her is a data-driven exploration of the ideology behind the spread of misogynist content and attitudes, online and in action. Arie Perliger and Catherine Jarry-Tranter map the landscape of online misogyny, identifying the distinctions between different groups and the dynamics shaping the evolution of extremism. They examine why some communities generate violence while others remain confined to extremist discourse, tracing the links between antifeminist ideologies and violence against women. They Hate Her also places the growth of extremist misogyny in the context of contemporary political, social, and economic dynamics. Tackling a hot-button topic with analytical depth and empirical rigor, this book provides an authoritative overview of misogynist violence—and how to counter it.
