Thomas Telford is arguably the most influential civil engineer who ever lived. First president of the Institution of Civil Engineers, he has left an enduring legacy.

From the 1790’s for four decades, Telford’s achievements were second to none in the application of engineering solutions, improved constructional materials and the use of technology. His projects, involving movement of people, goods or water extended to Poland, Sweden, Panama, Canada and India.
