In his new photo book, Phil Penman focuses his gaze on a metropolis that vibrates between neon lights and nighttime tranquility, tradition and future – and yet always allows for quiet, intimate moments. On his wanderings through the streets of Tokyo, the London-born photographer captures scenes that would easily be overlooked in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In atmospherically rich black-and-white photographs, Penman shows the Japanese metropolis from a more subdued, almost contemplative perspective – far removed from postcard clichés. Known for decades for his compelling street and portrait photography, Penman now applies his distinctive visual language to Tokyo. As in New York Street Diaries, he observes with great sensitivity and respect, always close to the people, their stories, and their emotions. The viewer is immediately drawn into the scenes; some images evoke an involuntary smile, others linger in the memory as quiet, reflective moods.
