How do British-Turks understand Britishness, and what does this mean for belonging in education, safeguarding in policies and equality in everyday life?
This book shows Britishness is understood differently across generations: young British-Turks see it as innate to their identity, while adults frame it as a legal status. It also examines the idea of “tolerance” as a Fundamental British Value, showing how it can both include and exclude.
Drawing on accounts from British-Turks, alongside non-/governmental representatives, the book shows how friendship, everyday interaction and contact between groups can open up alternative, more harmonious visions of belonging and equality that go beyond tolerance.
