Exploring the intersections between migration and tourism in the Mediterranean, this book is the result of extensive ethnographic research carried out over a decade in the Mediterranean regions. It focuses on three interrelated themes: the experiences of homecoming migrants who visit their country of origin for holidays; the inequalities surrounding the encounters between local people, tourists and migrants in borderlands; and how migration and tourism affect cultural heritage in European cities. The book shows how interconnected mobilities play a crucial role in boosting the global dynamics of cultural, social, economic and political transformation in the Mediterranean.

“The Mediterranean … has been shaped by the migration phenomena related to the colonial history and more recently to the crisis of receiving refugees – the author skillfully maneuvers through the history of the region’s multiple mobilities and connectivities … My overall opinion about the book is very positive.” • Natalia Bloch, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań

"Vietti’s book offers a major contribution to the anthropological study of the Mediterranean. This timely and inspiring work of scholarship focuses on the main forms of human mobility that characterize this region today, namely tourism and migration. Through a fascinating journey from Albania to Greece, and from Southern to Northern Italy, the author builds a rich ethnography of the paradoxical and multifarious encounters between locals, migrants, and tourists. This complex theme is handled admirably. As a whole, Vietti’s ethnographic accounts and theoretical arguments are sure to generate refreshing debate and reflection in different research fields, including tourism, migration, and heritage studies." • Dionigi Albera, CNRS, Aix-Marseille University, France.

Francesco Vietti is Assistant Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Turin, Italy. He has conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Mediterranean.
