This essay collection narrates a decade of tireless advocacy for a resolute international response to Moscow’s threat to Ukraine and to global peace. The contributions reflect a timeline of Russia's unfolding revanchist strategy to upend the Western-led international order by using its genocidal war on Ukraine as a battering ram against the pillars of the free world. The authors argued that what is at stake in Ukraine is not just territory, but the historic trajectory for the world’s democracies.
The writings of this book offer an insightful perspective on the Western response to Russia’s emergence as a rogue state. The authors’ piercing arguments removed the gloss off the polished political posturing of Western leaders to expose their inadequate and irresponsible actions. For decades, until 2022, Western leadership had been ignoring Russia’s threat to global security and pursued Putin’s appeasement at the expense of the nations which Moscow strived to subjugate. The doomed policy of wooing Russia to prevent its closer alliance with China backfired. Instead of aligning Russia with the West, it paved the way to a growing global anti-western axis of terror, led by Moscow and backed by Beijing.

Ariana Gic is a Canadian political and legal analyst, author, and coordinator of advocacy campaigns. She has been published by Politico, EUobserver, Atlantic Council, and other outlets. Since 2022, Gic has been sanctioned by the Russian Federation for her work supporting Ukraine’s defence against Russian aggression. She is Director of the Direct Initiative International Centre for Ukraine and a Senior Advisor at The Centre for Eastern European Democracy (CEED).
