The Vatican Apostolic Library and the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies celebrate the centenary of the birth of Leonard E. Boyle, O.P. (1923–1999) with a volume of collected essays. It unites twelve studies authored by his students, students of his students, collaborators, colleagues, and friends. The contributions reflect Fr. Boyle’s wide range of interests and his commitment to studying the medieval past by a thoroughly interdisciplinary approach to the texts and witnesses through which the past speaks to us. Stephen M. Metzger, Ph.D. (2013), University of Notre Dame, is an Assistent in the Department of Manuscripts of the Vatican Apostolic Library. His publications on medieval and early modern intellectual and religious history include Gerard of Abbeville, Secular Master, on Knowledge, Wisdom and Contemplation (Brill, 2017).
M. Michèle Mulchahey, Ph.D. (1989), University of Toronto, M.S.D. (1996), PIMS, is the Leonard E. Boyle Chair in Manuscript Studies at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies. Among her numerous publications on the religious and intellectual culture of the later Middle Ages is "First the Bow is Bent in Study...”: Dominican Education before 1350 (PIMS, 1998).
