Leading vocabulary scholar, Norbert Schmitt, draws on his career of over 35 years to present his perspective of the field of second language vocabulary
This book offers a comprehensive discussion of the state of the art of vocabulary description, acquisition, theory, pedagogy and assessment. It synthesises research demonstrating the complexity of vocabulary knowledge, the integration of different aspects of vocabulary knowledge and the incremental nature of vocabulary acquisition.
The author combines these realisations in the field to form the Complex Integrated Incremental Perspective (CIIP), which serves as the framework for the book and future vocabulary pedagogy and research. This will be of interest to trainee language teachers and researchers looking to understand lexical research through new conceptualisations, the evidence supporting them and their implications and applications for the field
Norbert Schmitt is Emeritus Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Nottingham, UK. He is a global expert on lexical issues and is interested in all aspects of second language vocabulary acquisition. His bestselling student textbook (with Diane Schmitt) Focus on Vocabulary (2000, 2013, Pearson Longman) has sold over 100,000 copies and he has published over 100 articles and chapters on lexical issues, as well as a further ten books on vocabulary and applied linguistics issues.
