There are most likely thousands of leadership books written to equip leaders to develop the skills and behaviors necessary to encourage their teams to achieve goals and purposes. However, the primary focus of this book is to assist leaders in looking deeper into the expectations and motivations of the people they serve. So as the organization is achieving its strategic plans and objectives, it is also meeting the critical needs and ambitions of its most important essential resources, better known as its human resources.
In businesses and organizations today, everything begins and ends with leadership. The leaders, who go beyond the obvious to uncover these critical hidden expectations of their employees, are able to create a culture of engagement and retention where employees not only give you their hands but, most importantly, their hearts. The return on investment for this effort is that the leader will earn their employees’ best effort. Therefore, when you know your employees “why” game, they will bring their “A-game.”
What sets "Why People Work" apart is its unwavering focus on fostering healthy work relationships. Drawing from extensive research and real-world experiences, Charles and Heckman shed light on the pervasive issue of unhealthy workplace dynamics and offer tangible strategies to cultivate environments where individuals feel seen, heard, and valued. This book is a must read.
The authors' genuine commitment to uplifting others shines through every page, infused with the wisdom gleaned from their illustrious careers in leadership development. From Ercell Charles' embodiment of humility and authenticity to Merle Heckman's lifelong dedication to influencing and inspiring others, their combined expertise creates a compelling narrative that resonates far beyond the confines of the workplace.
Whether you call yourself a leader or not, if you're ready to embark on a journey of self-discovery, empowerment, and meaningful connection, I wholeheartedly encourage you to explore the profound insights within "Why People Work." Let this book be your guide as you navigate the complexities of leadership and unlock the boundless potential within yourself and those around you. - M. Nami MD, PhD; Neurocognitivist Sleep Disorders Fellow; Assistant Professor, Canadian University Dubai, UAE; Certified Physician Executive Member Harvard Alumni Entrepreneurs; Chief Scientist, Neuroscience Director BrainHub, UAE
“A thoughtful and engaging deep dive into today’s workplace by two authors whose empathetic view of leadership is continuous learning. Their combined perspective will connect the reader with influencing others and, most importantly, themselves. It is a necessary book for those whose drive focuses on continuous self-development and improvement in their leadership journey.” - Jay R. Harf, VP EPS&S
The book provided by you was engrossing, giving me a cinematic experience. Despite its simplicity, it was packed with valuable insights into the reality of how many corporate leaders operate nowadays and what should be the correct approach of driving people/goals. It highlighted the importance of adopting collaborative approaches, displaying appropriate behavior, and executing tasks effectively. The book could be an excellent reference for those leaders who believe that they can use their power to dominate their employees. It shows that true leadership is about building positive relationships with employees and inspiring them to achieve their potential.
Your generosity in sharing your experience, knowledge, and wisdom in the book is truly inspiring. Your words will serve as a guide to many who seek to enhance their personalities and spread the essence of the author's intention. Thank you for your contribution to the world. - Rajni Badola, General Manager Logistics & Exports Marathon Electric, Hyderabad, India
The book presents a unique perspective, dissecting the emotional and psychological reasons behind our work choices. Contrary to popular belief, the driving force is not primarily financial. Many leaders mistakenly prioritize this aspect. A principle I've adopted in managing and motivating my team is to view our employees as volunteers, with their compensation being emotional, psychological, and altruistic fulfillment.
Once someone reads the book, it is impossible for them not to subscribe to the concept of the "Rs." This is an operating instruction book for all future and current leaders. Not only is this a paradigm-shifting concept, but it is also the bible of LEADERSHIP! Most books out there are either about how to manage, which is tactics, or how to lead, which is strategic. This book combines both because it teaches how to be a leader, not what to do to manage people. - Zhen Wu, Certified Service Human, Dale Carnegie Training Texas - Austin, Houston, San Antonio
If you are a boss or a worker – this is a MUST Read!
Why do people work? I have asked myself that question for almost 50 years! I have read countless books on that subject (or, in many cases, I hoped they would be on that subject). But all I got was theory and management perspective. Honestly, not very helpful.
Ercell and Merle’s book answers the question from a worker’s perspective. My perspective. That helps me explain the difference between his theory and my reality to my boss. The theory is great, but I don’t live or work in “theory.”
As a boss, I can have real and direct conversations with my staff and co-workers. Several of Ercell’s thoughts, especially the six “Hidden Expectations,” are borderline on “obvious genius”! Read the book, you’ll see! This is a fresh perspective on work. It’s a must-read for everyone.- Clark Merrill, Author, Speaker, Carnegie Master/ Master Trainer at Dale Carnegie & Associates, Stoneham, MA.
It's not often the "why" question gets answered when one asks. However, Ercell and Merle have done an excellent job giving leaders insightful tools in their book, "Why People Work." Now, let me answer the "why" question on why I say that. Simply because it is true, relatable, and relevant. Everyone looks for meaning in life, but if leaders can tap into what the authors call the "hidden expectations" of why people work, these leaders who employ these concepts will find a rewarding outcome for themselves, their companies, and especially their employees. "Why People Work" is a must-read for those who need to go beyond the obvious and tap into making the work environment optimal and synergize these elements to achieve the desired success and pay off every dynamic organization's wants and needs. - Assistant Pastor Karen Jones, at Believers Family Worship Center, Youngsville, Louisiana
“…when you stop learning, you stop leading.” This book is a must-read for anyone in a position of leadership. Understanding “Why People Work” is crucial for anyone in a position of authority. Leaders should apply this book's concepts to go beyond the assumption that all employees want a paycheck from their job. Yes, money is a factor, but as the book beautifully points out, it's so much more. I believe Theodore Roosevelt said, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” This book gives you the tools and the care factor to understand why people work and meet them where they are in the workplace and meet their needs. As a business owner, I will share this information with everyone, because this book is a game changer! I encourage everyone to do the same. Thanks, Ercell Charles and Merle Heckman, for a job well done! - Tamara Daye, Regional Vice President at Primerica Financial Services, Louisiana Metropolitan Area
In "Why People Work”, the authors address the critical issue of employee expectations in today's rapidly changing workplace. The book goes beyond simply identifying the problems which exist within an organization. Actionable and imperative strategies are offered for managers to bridge the gap between their expectations and those of their teams. These strategies include “The 6 R’s” which describe the hidden expectations of employees and provide a strong foundation for managers seeking to understand and adapt to the evolving needs of their teams. The early morning wake up for both employees and managers will transition from the traditional “alarm clock” to an “opportunity clock”. The strategies will facilitate a daily “win-win” environment for everyone in the rapidly changing 21st century organization. - David Vrbanich, (retired) Hospital Administrator
To be sure, someone has said the key to selling real estate is, “Location, Location, Location “. I might add that the key to a successful business is, “Leadership, Leadership, Leadership “. A leadership who care enough to understand their employees and to provide the motivation, fuel and encouragement to make the workplace an environment for success. I believe this book will provide just that. A must for all, who have people look to them for guidance in the workplace. A book that is more than a “how to”, but a book for leaders who care for the emotional well being of the people they serve through leadership.
In addition, I have taken courses with Merle Heckman as the facilitator. I can testify personally that Merle is the real deal. You could feel and see how he cared about the people he was leading. His demonstration, during that class, of these principles that are found in this book, is one of many reasons for reading it. This isn’t just hype. It’s lived by the author! - Pastor Jim Colley
Any company who desires to succeed, must learn how to lead, motivate and inspire people. Any person who desires happiness and success in all areas of life, no matter who we are with, no matter where we are in life, must learn the value of giving, showing appreciation, inspiration, positive influence and serving others. This book provides the necessary skills to be the best leader in any business by getting to know people. Success, feeling fulfilled in life with purpose and meaning in any area of life, goes beyond just a paycheck in why people work. - Diana Rhinehimer, Airborne Maintenance & Engineering Services Wilmington, OH
As the owner of a small business in the medical field, I often find myself occupied with the day in-day out operations of patient care and management. But as I move into my third year of ownership, I find my business growing to the point of needing three or four colleagues under my management to keep order and satisfaction high. Patient satisfaction is only high when employee satisfaction is high— it’s a direct correlation and quite obvious in my practice. How can I inspire these employees to buy into the vision I’ve created and not only enjoy their work but continually look for growth opportunities both personally and professionally? “Why People Work” is a great example of why culture, leadership style, attitude, and simple observation is crucial to creating an impactful role as a leader. Passion feeds off passion, and effort feeds off effort. This book will help anyone— whether it’s an individual in a leadership role for the first time, or someone who’s been in management for decades by address the core of it all: simple human desire. A sure desire of any employee is earning a paycheck, but this book does an excellent job of looking beyond that, into the mist, of the less visible desires of an employee. This is a must-read for anyone who is yearning for personal and professional growth. - Matthew J. Kist, Au.D., FAAA, Luhn Hearing Care Associates/Northern Kentucky Audiology
I would highly recommend reading the book titled, “Why People Work”, authored by Ercell Charles and Merle Heckman. I met Merle nearly 10 years ago and I’ve been fortunate enough to see Merle in action doing what he loves, interacting with professionals and teaching on the subject of leadership.
The subject of this book is so important. So many leaders are focused on the very best continuous improvement processes and the latest and greatest management practices. All very important but if the team doesn’t feel valued and appreciated, if there isn’t a shared sense of accomplishment, they won’t be motivated to bring their “A-game”. If you consider yourself a servant leader, then it’s a must to understand why the people on the team go to work every day! - Jon Schlemmer, Vice President & General Manager, Modine Manufacturing
"This text provides impactful, authentic guidance and insight from leaders that know that will help teams get back on track, rise to new levels of performance, and enhance the quality of workplace." - Lee W. Bewley, Ph.D., FACHE University of Louisville School of Public Health and Information Sciences Director, Health Management Programs Associate Professor, (Past) President, Kentucky ACHE
Holy Cow – They hit this one out of the park! The concepts, thoughts and ideas presented in this book aren’t overly sophisticated or difficult for any leader to grasp, develop and implement. What I like the most is that the principles presented can enhance not only your leadership effectiveness but enhance other areas of your life as well. It’s been said that it is all about the people and this book helps solidify that statement. The book helps us to learn when we focus on the people we serve, we can improve job satisfaction, engagement, and retention. A true win-win! - Darrell Betz, Director of Human Resources Fairbanks Morse Defense
