Acoustics and protection against noise do not perhaps number among the primary parameters that normally influence the design of a building. Research in the field of Chinese as a second/foreign language (L2) acquisition, at present, does not match the increasing demand to learn Chinese as an L2, given that Chinese is the fastest growing foreign language in countries such as Japan, South Korea, the United States, Canada, UK and Australia.

Particularly, research in Chinese L2 word order acquisition requires more attention because word order plays a more complex role in Chinese than in English due to the fact that Chinese relies heavily on word order for information structuring. Experience with Chinese L2 learning and teaching shows that Chinese word order errors are a significant problem with adult English-speaking learners. However, Chinese L2 researchers and teachers are left with no means to adequately describe and explain these errors for instruction purposes.

The third largest city in eighteenth-century Syria—after Aleppo and Damascus—Acre was the capital of a politically and economically unique region on the Mediterranean coast that included what is today northern Israel and southern Lebanon. In the eighteenth century, Acre grew dramatically from a small fishing village to a fortified city of some 25,000 inhabitants. Cash crops (first cotton, then grain) made Acre the center of trade and political power and linked it inextricably to the world economy. Acre was markedly different from other cities in the region: its urban society consisted almost exclusively of immigrants seeking their fortune.

The rise and fall of Acre in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Thomas Philipp argues, must be seen against the background of the decay of central power in the Ottoman empire. Destabilization of imperial authority allowed for the resurfacing of long-submerged traditional power centers and the integration of Arab regions into European and world economies. This larger imperial context proves the key to addressing many questions about the local history of Acre and its peripheries. How were the new sources of wealth and patterns of commerce that remade Acre reconciled with traditional forms of political power and social organization? Were these forms really traditional? Or did entirely new classes develop under the circumstances of an immigrant society and new commercial needs? Over the course of the last two decades, novelist Karen Tei Yamashita has reshaped the Asian American literary imagination in profound ways. In Across Meridians, Jinqi Ling offers readers the most critically engaged examination to date of Yamashita's literary corpus. Crafted at the intersection of intellectual history, ethnic studies, literary analysis, and critical theory, Ling's study goes beyond textual investigation to intervene in larger debates over postmodern representation, spatial materialism, historical form, and social and academic activism.

Union
soldiers left home in 1861 with expectations that the conflict would be short,
the purpose of the war was clear, and public support back home was universal.
As the war continued, however, Union soldiers began to perceive a great
difference between what they expected and what was actually occurring. Their
family relationships were evolving, the purpose of the war was changing, and
civilians were questioning the leadership of the government and Army to the
point of debating whether the war should continue at all.

Separated
from Northern civilians by a series of literal and figurative divides, Union
soldiers viewed the growing disparities between their own expectations and
those of their families at home with growing concern and alarm. Instead of
support for the war, an extensive and oft-violent anti-war movement emerged.
Often at odds with those at home and with limited means of communication to
their homes at their disposal, soldiers used letters, newspaper editorials, and
political statements to influence the actions and beliefs of their home

Union
soldiers left home in 1861 with expectations that the conflict would be short,
the purpose of the war was clear, and public support back home was universal.
As the war continued, however, Union soldiers began to perceive a great
difference between what they expected and what was actually occurring. Their
family relationships were evolving, the purpose of the war was changing, and
civilians were questioning the leadership of the government and Army to the
point of debating whether the war should continue at all.

Separated
from Northern civilians by a series of literal and figurative divides, Union
soldiers viewed the growing disparities between their own expectations and
those of their families at home with growing concern and alarm. Instead of
support for the war, an extensive and oft-violent anti-war movement emerged.
Often at odds with those at home and with limited means of communication to
their homes at their disposal, soldiers used letters, newspaper editorials, and
political statements to influence the actions and beliefs of their home
communities. When communication failed, soldiers sometimes took extremist
positions on the war, its conduct, and how civilian attitudes about the
conflict should be shaped.

Through a comparative analysis of six case studies, this volume illustrates key conflict-resolution techniques for peacebuilding. Outside parties learn how to facilitate cooperation by engaging local leaders in intensive, interactive workshops. These opposing leaders reside in small, ethnically divided countries, including Burundi, Cyprus, Estonia, Guyana, Sri Lanka, and Tajikistan, that have experienced communal conflicts in recent years. In Estonia and Guyana, peacebuilding initiatives sought to ward off violence. In Burundi and Sri Lanka, initiatives focused on ending ongoing hostilities, and in Cyprus and Tajikistan, these efforts brought peace to the country after its violence had ended.

The contributors follow a systematic assessment framework, including a common set of questions for interviewing participants to prepare comparable results from a set of diverse cases. Their findings weigh the successes and failures of this particular approach to conflict resolution and draw conclusions about the conditions under which such interactive approaches work, as well as assess the audience and the methodologies used.

The work of Mehmedalija "Mak" Dizdar (1917-71) is the cornerstone of modern Bosnian literature. During the Second World War he was a member of the anti-fascist Partisans. After the war, he became prominent in Bosnian cultural life and eventually President of the Writers' Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina. His work blends influences from Bosnian Christian culture, Islamic mysticism, and the cultural remains of medieval Bosnia, especially its stone tombstones.

This book falls into two parts. The first is an essay on Dizdar's major poetry book Stone Sleeper. It argues that in his poetry Dizdar turns to spiritual regions and resources that had been suppressed during the time of communism. From the very outset, Stone Sleeper was recognized as a liberatrion from the ideological disciplines of communism, nationalism, and scientism. Few, however, were able fully to understand the traditional content of its post-traditional form.

In this part, Rusmir Mahmutcehajic introduces readers to the traditional substance of Stone Sleeper, in the context of what he calls "perennial philosophy." From that perspective, prophecy, being the source of perennial wisdom, is set above poetry. In some poetry, however, prophetic wisdom and poetic pronouncement exist inseparably. Stone Sleeper is an example of that mutual co-existence.

In the second part, the author traces, in a discussion of Dizdar's mystically influenced poem "Blue River," the perennial questions of how we are to discover or realize the human self in relation to God as Creator.
