Leonardo Padura's books are made of history, and literature, and Cuban cigar smoke, and of baseball to which the narrator from Havana is so fond. Die vorliegende Publikation enthält die Beiträge des 1. Internationalen Workshops der Papyrusrestauratoren, der im September 2006 in Leipzig stattgefunden hat. Es werden Einblicke in die tägliche Restaurierungspraxis, besondere Restaurierungen, die Problematik von Trägermaterialien sowie deren Ablösung und die Auflösung von Mumienkartonage gegeben. Darüber hinaus finden sich Beiträge zu technischen Fragen, sowohl zur Herstellung von Papyri als auch zur Falttechnik der Handschriften. Ebenso informieren die Beiträge über die Dokumentation der Restaurierung, die Digitalisierung der Objekte und ein neues Nassreinigungsverfahren.

Die Jahrhunderte um die Zeitenwende bilden die Phase der ägyptischen Hochkultur, in der der Kontakt zum Abendland am intensivsten war. Breite und Vielfalt dieses weithin unbekannten Schrifttums werden erschlossen sowie seine historische und kulturgeschichtliche Bedeutung für den Brückenschlag zwischen pharaonischer und abendländischer Kultur dargestellt. Alle Texte sind neu aus dem Demotischen übersetzt und ausführlich kommentiert. Detaillierte Indizes und eine thematisch gegliederte umfangreiche Bibliographie erleichtern den Zugang.

Um die nuancierte Funktionsweise von Interpunktion in den neutestamentlichen Handschriften der ägyptischen Spätantike zu ermitteln und eine mögliche Abhängigkeit oder auch Eigenständigkeit der koptischen von der älteren griechischen Interpunktion zu skizzieren, wurden mehrere Handschriften beider Sprachen nach einem neu entwickelten Schema behandelt. Die ausgewählten Zeugen umfassen die griechischen Kodizes P.Bodmer II und XV sowie den protobohairischen Papyrus Bodmer III und den sahidischen Gospelkodex sa 1, daneben mehrere Bilinguen mit dem Johannesevangelium.

Eine Zusammenstellung aller registrierten Pausen und deren Ordnung in ein Kategoriensystem bilden die Datensammlung. Eine darauf aufbauende Untersuchung von Schlüsselworten und bestimmten syntaktischen Strukturen auf die Regelmäßigkeit ihrer Markierung lässt Muster erkennen, die sich je nach Handschrift unterscheiden, jedoch häufig gemeinsame Grundzüge tragen. Die erfasste Interpunktion wirkt zumeist satzgliedernd und erleichtert den Lesefluss, kann teils aber auch inhaltliche Schwerpunkte setzen. Die Ergebnisse werfen neues Licht auf das setting, in dem die Handschriften produziert worden sind, und erlauben textkritisch relevante Einblicke in das spätantike Textverständnis.

Adolf Erman gilt als Gründungsvater der deutschen Ägyptologie. Seine Werke zu Sprache, Religions- und Literaturgeschichte des Alten Ägypten sind Meilensteine der Forschung; sie markieren den Wandel des Faches Ägyptologie von einer romantisierenden Beschäftigung mit dem Alten Ägypten zu einer modernen und kritischen Altertumswissenschaft. Erman stand aber zugleich in regem Austausch mit anderen bedeutenden Wissenschaftlern seiner Zeit (Max Planck, Theodor Mommsen, Eduard Meyer, Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff) und war eingebunden in den spannungsreichen Diskurs von Wissenschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft im Übergang vom 19. Jahrhundert bis zu den den 30er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der vorliegende Band thematisiert Ermans Leistung und seine Bedeutung für die Geistes- und Wissenschaftsgeschichte des späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts.

Die Studie versteht sich als Beitrag zur Ägyptenrezeption einerseits, zur Reiseliteratur- und Fremdheitsforschung andererseits. Sie untersucht das Ägyptenbild in der deutschen Reiseliteratur bis ins 17. Jahrhundert und verfolgt zwei Ziele: die systematische Erfassung der Reiseberichte und die Untersuchung der Ägyptendiskurse im Spannungsfeld von Ägyptomanie und Orientalismus. Mit der kommentierten Bibliographie legt sie das erste fundierte Nachschlagewerk zum Thema vor und schließt mit dieser Pionierarbeit eine lange bestehende Forschungslücke. Mit der Interpretation ausgewählter Reiseschriften stellt sie die Besonderheit der jeweiligen Quelle heraus und zeigt Kontinuitäten und Umbrüche in den vermittelten Ägyptenbildern und Darstellungsmustern auf. Die exemplarischen Textanalysen und flächendeckende Bestandsaufnahme verbindet die Studie mit aktuellen kulturwissenschaftlichen Theorien und der Identitätsdebatte aus ägyptischer und deutscher Perspektive. So gelingt es ihr erstmals, den monolithischen Orientalismus-Komplex zu dekonstruieren und dem hegemonialen Orientalismus Saids einen frühneuzeitlichen Orientalismus als Diskurs der Ohnmacht zur Seite zu stellen.
