Agrotropolis
Regular price $95.00 Save $-95.00In Agrotropolis, historian J. T. Way traces the developments of Guatemalan urbanization and youth culture since 1983. In case studies that bring together political economy, popular music, and everyday life, Way explores the rise of urban space in towns seen as quintessentially "rural" and showcases grassroots cultural assertiveness. In a post-revolutionary era, young people coming of age on the globally inflected city street used popular culture as one means of creating a new national imaginary that rejects Guatemala's racially coded system of castes. Drawing on local sources, deep ethnographies, and the digital archive, Agrotropolis places working-class Maya and mestizo hometowns and creativity at the center of planetary urban history.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
A fascinating window open to Padura's engine room, which allows the reader to look at everything that surrounds and shapes his writing.
Leonardo Padura's books are made of history, and literature, and Cuban cigar smoke, and of baseball to which the narrator from Havana is so fond. Padura's new work is a celebration and a tribute to the genre of the novel, to which he feels so indebted; In its pages he addresses issues around this invention that has been dealing with human issues for four centuries and being a tool for the transformation of society and a reflection of it. However, Padura does not shy away from the personal sphere and shows us the most intimate part of his work, the china shop, the table where characters and plots come to life that later become part of his celebrated novels. It contains a brilliant account of how what begins as a dim light in the writer's mind is transformed into narrative material. In the author's own words: "between an abstract, almost philosophical obsession and the complicated process of writing a novel, there is a long way, full of obstacles and challenges".
Padura gently takes the reader by the hand, and is in charge of illuminating that complicated path until he leaves him at the doors of the building of the novel.

Regular price $16.95 Save $-16.95Winner at the 2014 International Latino Book Awards. A stunning picture book about the life of a mute Comanche young boy who brought unity and togetherness among all of the Native American tribes through his magical silent tales.
The boy with the feather headdress told stories without saying a word. The boy whose legs formed the shape of a heart communicated with that special language that comes from within. With his hands, his face, his smile and his eyes, he could communicate everything his listeners needed to hear. Águila que Camina’s tales awoke deep emotions, conveyed a sense of solidarity, and created bonds between hands and hearts of different tribes that lasted forever.
A magical tale about nature and harmony between the different peoples of the world, reminding us of the power of stories to bring out our very best from within the deepest part of the human soul.

Regular price $26.95 Save $-26.95The lowly mushroom, grown quietly, in the dark, has suddenly sprung onto the health scene as a miracle cure. Once castigated as a mere fungus, the mushroom has acquired a signature cachet in the form of active hexose-correlated compound (AHCC), a nutritional product made from healing mushrooms fermented in rice bran. AHCC is used in over 700 clinics and hospitals in Japan, mainly in cancer treatment.
Now AHCC: The Medical Breakthrough in Natural Immunotherapy reveals what the Japanese have known for decades: AHCC is as well-researched as any conventional prescription drug. The quality control of AHCC is so stringent that it would easily qualify as a licensed pharmaceutical, but the manufacturers believe that this would limit its availability to the many people in Japan—healthy people, who use it as a preventive as well as for a variety of other purposes. Because it is actually a mushroom-based food, even though it is often made available in capsule form, it is extremely safe for anyone to take, including children, pets, frail elderly people, and patients who have undergone surgery.
AHCC: The Medical Breakthrough in Natural Immunotherapy explores AHCC in depth, explaining:
- How it is manufactured
- How it is used in clinics in Japan and other parts of the world
- Its safety and efficacy
- The scientific evidence supporting its striking versatility and profound effectiveness for a wide variety of conditions
AHCC: The Medical Breakthrough in Natural Immunotherapy will introduce you to AHCC and expand your knowledge of one of the most important food supplements available on the market today.

Along the way, readers learn what viruses are and what they do, what cancer is and how it happens, the complexities of the AIDS problem, how genetic engineering works, and why making a vaccine is a complicated process. And, as Crotty considers Baltimore's public life, he retells the famous scientific fraud saga and Baltimore's vindication after a decade of character assassination.
Crotty possesses the alchemical skill of converting technical scientific history into entertaining prose as he conveys Baltimore's huge ambitions, intensity, scientific genius, attitude toward science and politics, and Baltimore's own view about what happened in the "Baltimore Affair." Ahead of the Curve shows why with his complex personality, keen involvement in public issues, and wide-ranging interests David Baltimore has not only shaped the face of American science as we know it today, but has also become a presence in our culture.

Ahead of the Curve: Andy Maguire in Congress and Beyond
Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00From the United Nations Security Council, through community organizing that changed the paradigm of municipal redevelopment, to the revolutionary post–Watergate Congress and his role spearheading new environmental, anti-cancer, and global vaccine health initiatives, Andy Maguire was on the front lines in seminal moments of recent American history.
Ahead of the Curve is the riveting story of how Andy learned to accumulate power and leverage it for the public good. Andy’s terms in Congress coincided with the tumultuous times of the Israeli Six-Day War and the reform era of New York Mayor John Lindsay. After a successful unorthodox campaign in a staunch Republican district, he helped revive a hidebound House of Representatives and led an important new environmental movement there. Pacesetting international development work came next.
Andy learned early on that no single person can create real change, discovering how to take risks, use power, build teams, spot compromises, and mobilize diverse interests to get constructive change done. His story is more than an inspiring memoir, and more than a portrait of a committed changemaker pursuing the common good. It also is a coming-of-age tale and an implementation handbook that shows others how to continue Andy’s work.
This vivid insider’s view of fifty years of world history by Michael Takiff, bestselling author of A Complicated Man: The Life of Bill Clinton as Told by Those Who Knew Him, is both a compelling read and a beacon of hope for the current era.
Ahead of the Curve is an exceptionally valuable and important book for those who seek to confront today’s challenges to American democracy and a stable world order.
