Align
Regular price $16.95 Save $-16.95
Through the process Align offers, leaders develop the courage to connect with their team in a meaningful way and start winning together. Through Align, leaders will learn to create alignment within their organization and develop a culture built on employee fulfillment. It shows leaders exactly how to get there. Within Align, leaders learn how to:
Aligned
Regular price $19.99 Save $-19.99When something health-related goes wrong, it typically impacts lives. It's not a broken computer, stalled vehicle, or a large home repair; it's a loved one's well-being on the line. In the middle of this angst, families are further burdened by exorbitant healthcare costs. Many are unprepared, and even the well-insured may be launched into multiple-thousands of dollars in debt. None of this has to be your reality!
- Did you know two prices exist for any hospital procedure? Let's discuss how you can get the best pricing.
- Do you feel healthcare costs are too high? We'll explore real examples of why that is.
- Is a hospital the best place for overall care? No—and you'll clearly see why not.
- Has mainstream healthcare impacted us positively or negatively? To find out, we will explore real case studies of patients, employers, and doctors.
- What is subscription-based, direct-pay healthcare? It's the way you beat the mainstream healthcare system.
There are established solutions to our current health insurance cost crisis. Importantly, these solutions work together with both uninsured and insured patients and their employers, as well as physicians. The health coverage model highlighted in this book will save money for every patient, business owner, and medical professional who participates.
Dr. Cristin Dickerson is a board-certified radiologist who has developed an award winning, direct-pay network of imaging centers an outpatient diagnostic testing. She's seen the good, the bad, and the ugly ways patients, doctors, and employers utilize health coverage. If you are ready to think outside the box regarding health insurance and save substantial cold, hard dollars on the critical need for healthcare, you've come to the right place.
Let us show you how to align yourself with affordable, wellness-focused healthcare!
Aligned Influence®: Beyond Governance
Regular price $17.95 Save $-17.95Within every organization is an “ecosystem” of influencers. In organizations with boards of directors and executives, that ecosystem is even more complex, and it is even more important to understand it for the benefit of everyone, including the investors/donors. To date, governance models have provided little to no understanding of this ecosystem of influence, leaving this as an ongoing problem in organizations with the complexity of a board and executive. Governance experts have applied a number of inadequate solutions to a problem they still do not grasp. Within Aligned Influence®, Ken Schuetz presents the Aligned Influence® model which offers a unique perspective to this central problem and a solution that addresses organizational alignment as a necessary prerequisite to effectiveness.

In Aligning Strategy and Sales, Harvard Business School professor Frank Cespedes equips you to link your go-to-market initiatives with strategic goals. Cespedes offers a road map to articulate strategy in ways that people in the field can understand and that will fuel the behaviors required for profitable growth. Without that alignment, leaders will press for better execution when they need a better strategy, or change strategic direction with great cost and turmoil when they should focus on the basics of sales execution.
With thoughtful, clear, and engaging examples, Aligning Strategy and Sales provides a framework for diagnosing and managing the core levers available for effective selling in any organization. It will give you the know-how and tools to move from ideas to action and build a sales effort linked to your firm’s unique goals, not a generic selling formula.
Cespedes shows how sales efforts affect all elements of value creation in a business, whether you’re a start-up seeking to scale or an established firm looking to jump-start new growth. The book provides key insights to optimize your firm’s customer management activities and so improve selling and strategy.

As you read through the lessons in this book you will begin to refocus on the battle at hand and strive to put God's will above your own. Among these pages you will find the compass that guides you forward toward discovering the victory Jesus has in mind for you and, ultimately aligning yourself more closely with God in finding His will.
“In Alignment Moriah Hagel pens a heartfelt study that guides the reader to check for a completely different, and immensely more important kind of alignment: the alignment of one’s heart with the Lord Jesus Christ. Such Spiritual misalignment can also create a lot of problems; leading to challenging life experiences, and a struggle for Spiritual peace of mind. Moriah leads the reader through the highly practical New Testament book of James. The daily writings are both genuine and personal; as if the reader is simply peeking over Moriah’s shoulder as she walks through her own life experiences. The struggles are real; but the mined nuggets of truth in the scripture are definitely up to the task of strengthening one’s walk with the Lord. Any reader will be blessed and encouraged by this book.”

Alignment
Regular price $44.99 Save $-44.99Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton argue that the responsibility for this critical alignment lies with corporate headquarters. In this book, the authors apply their revolutionary Balanced Scorecard management system to corporate-level strategy, revealing how highly successful enterprises achieve powerful synergies by explicitly defining corporate headquarters’ role in setting, coordinating, and overseeing organizational strategy.
Based on extensive field research in organizations worldwide, Alignment shows how companies can build an enterprise-level Strategy Map and Balanced Scorecard that clearly articulate the enterprise value proposition”: how the enterprise creates value above that achieved by individual business units operating alone. The book provides case studies, actionable frameworks, and sample scorecards that show how to align business and support units, boards of directors, and external partners with the corporate strategy and create a governance process that will ensure that alignment is sustained.
The next breakthrough in strategy execution from the field’s premier thinkers, Alignment shows how today’s companies can unlock unrealized value from enterprise synergies.

Alignment and Ergativity in New Indo-Aryan Languages
Regular price $198.99 Save $-198.99The volume investigates the different alignment patterns in Indo-Aryan and shows that the variation of alignment patterns in Indo-Aryan goes beyond the opposition between accusativity and ergativity. The book includes a thorough discussion of the concepts and terminology relating to alignment patterns.
The study draws extensively on new language data from Indo-Aryan. It includes discussions of examples taken from Hindi, Sanskrit, Apabhramsa, Asamiya, Bangla, Oriya, the Bihari languages, Nepali, Kashmiri, Sindhi, Siraiki, Poguli, Gujarati, Punjabi, Marwari, Harauti, the Hindi varieties, and Shina. The volume offers a comprehensive overview of various alignment patterns in Indo-Aryan based on a wide range of data. By focusing on lesser known Indo-Aryan languages, the study questions the central position of Hindi-Urdu in the research on ergativity. Each language is treated in its own right, with a focus on language-specific data and analyses, rather than relying on a notional format that starts with pre-established linguistic concepts. In accordance with this methodology, much attention is paid to "indirect" connections between ergative constructions and other syntactic and semantic patterns in the various languages.
Alignment Change in Iranian Languages
Regular price $320.00 Save $-320.00The Iranian languages, due to their exceptional time-depth of attestation, constitute one of the very few instances where a shift from accusative alignment to split-ergativity is actually documented. Yet remarkably, within historical syntax, the Iranian case has received only very superficial coverage. This book provides the first in-depth treatment of alignment change in Iranian, from Old Persian (5 C. BC) to the present. The first part of the book examines the claim that ergativity in Middle Iranian emerged from an Old Iranian agented passive construction. This view is rejected in favour of a theory which links the emergence of ergativity to External Possession. Thus the primary mechanisms involved is not reanalysis, but the extension of a pre-existing construction. The notion of Non-Canonical Subjecthood plays a pivotal role, which in the present account is linked to the semantics of what is termed Indirect Participation. In the second part of the book, a comparative look at contemporary West Iranian is undertaken. It can be shown that throughout the subsequent developments in the morphosyntax, distinct components such as agreement, nominal case marking, or the grammar of cliticisation, in fact developed remarkably independently of one another. It was this de-coupling of sub-systems of the morphosyntax that led to the notorious multiplicity of alignment types in Iranian, a fact that also characterises past-tense alignments in the sister branch of Indo-European, Indo-Aryan. Along with data from more than 20 Iranian languages, presented in a manner that renders them accessible to the non-specialist, there is extensive discussion of more general topics such as the adequacy of functional accounts of changes in case systems, discourse pressure and the role of animacy, the notion of drift, and the question of alignment in early Indo-European.
Alignment Despite Antagonism
Regular price $40.00 Save $-40.00Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) have been two of the most critical pillars of peace, stability, and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region for the past thirty years. At the same time, their relationship has fluctuated markedly and unpredictably. Despite the existence of a common ally in the United States and common security threats from the former Soviet Union, China, and North Korea, bilateral relations between Japan and South Korea have been persistently marred by friction.
In the first in-depth study of this puzzling relationship in over fifteen years, the author compares the commonly accepted explanation for this relationship—historical enmity—with one that focuses on policies of the United States as the key driver of Japan-ROK relations. He finds that while history and emotion certainly affect the ways in which Japanese and Koreans regard each other, cooperation and dissension in the relationship are better understood through what he calls a “quasi-alliance” model: two states that remain unallied but have a third party as a common ally.
This model finds that the “normal” state of Japan-ROK relations is characterized by friction that stems not only from history, but also from fundamental asymmetries in Japanese and Korean expectations of support from each other. The author shows, however, that in periods when the American defense commitment to the region is weak, Japan-ROK relations exhibit significantly less contention over bilateral issues. Without the prop of U.S. assistance, the two countries are seemingly willing to overlook the usual causes of friction and to adopt a more pragmatic approach. The author discusses the effects of democratization and the post-Cold War era on the triangular relationship, and addresses the prospects of a united Korea and its future relations with Japan, the United States, and China.
The book covers the period from 1965 to 1998 and draws on recently declassified U.S. documents, internal Korean government documents, and interviews with former policy makers in the United States, Japan, and Korea.

Aliscans

Regular price $29.95 Save $-29.95Little Grey Rabbit and Sam Pig are just two of the inspired characters created by Alison Uttley, loved by millions and still very popular today. But who was the real woman spinning enchanting tales of country life and lore, magic and friendship?
Alison Uttley gathered much of the inspiration for her stories from the fond memories of her Derbyshire childhood and her love of the countryside. A talented and prolific writer, she was still producing stories in her late eighties. Yet she was often plagued by self-doubt, and extremely possessive over her close friends, family and work. Tragically, Alison's husband committed suicide before her writing successes. She soon developed a smothering relationship with her only child John, even convincing him to jilt his first fiancée and escape to Scotland - the honeymoon destination.
With exclusive and unrestricted access to her personal diaries and private letters, Denis Judd paints an intriguing portrait of one of the most successful, creative and troubled children's authors of modern times.

ALIVE
Regular price $56.00 Save $-56.00In times where the very concept of ‘nature’ is questioned not only in its philosophical dimension, but in the core of its biological materiality, we need to reconsider the interrelations between architecture and nature. This not only applies to strategies on environmental responsibility but equally on anticipatory human behavior and cultural or demographic variety.
To address these challenges this book proposes to embrace the unknown and cultivate the architectural discipline towards an integrated and cross-disciplinary practice. It unravels compelling innovative and forward-thinking design narratives by leading international practitioners and researchers who investigate novel associations between architecture, nature and humanity for a future, alive architecture. Structured around the three closely cross-linked core themes “bioinspiration”, “materiability”, and “intelligence” the book engages with the starting point of an emerging new design field, where the symbiosis of physics, biology, computing and design promises the redefinition of what we call architecture today.

Alive at Work
Regular price $15.99 Save $-15.99Poll after poll has confirmed that an astonishing number of workers are disengaged from their work. Why is this happening? And how can we fix the problem?
In this bold, enlightening book, social psychologist and professor Daniel M. Cable takes leaders into the minds of workers and reveals the surprising secret to restoring their zest for work.
Disengagement isn't a motivational problem, it's a biological one. Humans aren't built for routine and repetition. We're designed to crave exploration, experimentation, and learning--in fact, there's a part of our brains, which scientists have coined "the seeking system," that rewards us for taking part in these activities. But the way organizations are run prevents many of us from following our innate impulses. As a result, we shut down.
Things need to change. More than ever before, employee creativity and engagement are needed to win. Fortunately, it won't take an extensive overhaul of your organizational culture to get started. With small nudges, you can personally help people reach their fullest potential.
Alive at Work reveals:
- How to encourage people to bring their best selves to work and use their greatest strengths to help your organization flourish
- How to build creative environments that motivate people to share ideas, work smarter, and embrace change
- How to enhance people's connection to their work and your customers
- How to create personalized experiences that help people feel a deeper sense of purpose
Filled with fascinating stories from the author's extensive research, Alive at Work is the inspirational guide that you need to tap into the passion, creativity, and purpose fizzing beneath the surface of every person who falls under your leadership.

Regular price $230.00 Save $-230.00The editors of the Traditio Praesocratica series have set themselves the goal of presenting the traditional knowledge of the so-called pre-Socratic philosophers as completely as possible in text and translation. The reception-historical perspective of the endeavour explains the chronological arrangement of the testimonies - in comparison to most other existing collections on the pre-Socratics - in their respective transmission context.
In the fourth volume of the series (after Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes as well as Xenophanes) the Greek, Latin and Arabic surviving testimonies from the fourth century BC to the end of the Middle Ages on the life and teachings of the three western Greek philosophers Alcmaion, Hippon and Menestor are reproduced in chronological order and with a German translation. While Alkmaion of Kroton attracted attention in the subsequent history of reception primarily due to his theories on the physiology of the senses, possibly based on empirical evidence, Hippon (of Metapont?) repeatedly attracted the interest of later authors due to his epithet 'the godless'. Menestor of Sybaris, on the other hand, is known almost exclusively from Theophrastus' botanical works, who saw in him an occasionally quotable predecessor of his own corresponding research. All testimonies (Alkmaion about 100, Hippon about 90, Menestor about 5) are provided with brief contextual information on the respective author and the work in which the testimony is found. In addition, the testimonies are accompanied by thematically orientated 'similes', which are intended to provide a better orientation of the transmission and reception contexts. Detailed indices conclude the volume.
The study of pre-Socratic philosophy is thus provided with a further basic volume that enables a comprehensive view not only with regard to the reconstruction of the life and teachings of the thinkers in question, but also and above all with regard to their reception.

All Aboard
Regular price $44.95 Save $-44.95Presenting over fifty works by a broad cross-section of major artists, this new volume captures the huge and lasting impact of the railroad on America through the eyes of the artists who witnessed its expansion.
All Aboard covers the environmental impact of the railroad on the environment and social landscape; its role in the western expansion of the USA, and the lasting and hugely detrimental impact of this on Native American populations. A wide array of comparative images includes archival and historic views, other related artworks and ephemera, as well as a railroad map.In the early years of the nineteenth century artists including Thomas Cole and George Inness, of the Hudson River School, feared the impact of the railroad on the natural landscape; later artists were inspired by the newly opened-up landscapes of the West, including Albert Bierstadt and Theodore Kaufmann; others like Edward Hopper, Jacob Lawrence, Reginald Marsh, George Bellows, and John Sloan, were fascinated by movement of freight and people across the railroad network. Ben Shahn, Tomas Hart Benton, and Joe Jones's portrayals of railroad workers become emblems of the very backbone of America on which the country’s social and industrial expansion was built.Such industrial expansion is captured in the dramatic views of Pittsburgh and mid-west industry in paintings by Otto Kuhler, George Luks, and Charles Sheeler. And finally, there are a raft of artists for whom the railroad was both at the heart of a great new machine age, celebrated in paintings by Georgia O’Keeffe, John Marin, Joseph Stella, and Charles Goeller, but also the creator of a more lonely and alienated urban industrial world, most strongly captured in Edward Hopper’s railroad landscapes.

all about CHALETS
Regular price $69.95 Save $-69.95Exclusive living retreats set against the backdrop of majestic peaks, steep slopes and picturesque valleys
The chalet is a building style that enjoys lasting popularity all over the world. Dating back to the herdsman’s hut in the Alpine region, it became a longed-for destination and the most preferred holiday domicile in the 19th century with the emerging fascination with the Alps. Today, architects and designers are primarily inspired by the constantly redefined interplay of sublime nature, traditional architecture, regional building typologies, individual design, and modern formal language that pushes them to reach magnificent creative peaks.
The projects selected for this volume are diverse and remarkably multifaceted: From a traditional construction with a flat gable roof, wide roof overhang, and robust timber façade, to contemporary, thoroughly idiosyncratic interpretations with clear lines, creative choice of materials, and fine details. However, the artful staging of the imposing mountain world in the interior design plays a decisive role among all presented chalets.

Regular price $16.95 Save $-16.95In this “moving condemnation of the U.S. penal system and its effect on families”, award-winning journalist Nell Bernstein takes an intimate look at parents and children—over two million of them—torn apart by our current incarceration policy (Parents’ Press). Described as “meticulously reported and sensitively written” by Salon, the book is “brimming with compelling case studies . . . and recommendations for change” (Orlando Sentinel).
Our Weekly Los Angeles calls it “a must-read for lawmakers as well as for lawbreakers.”
“In terms of elegance, breadth and persuasiveness, All Alone in the World deserves to be placed alongside other classics of the genre such as Jonathan Kozol’s Savage Inequalities, Alex Kotlowitz’s There Are No Children Here and Adrian Nicole LeBlanc’s Random Family. But to praise the book’s considerable literary or sociological merit seems beside the point. This book belongs not only on shelves but also in the hands of judges and lawmakers.” —San Francisco Chronicle
“Well researched and smoothly written, Bernstein’s book pumps up awareness of the problems, provides a checklist for what needs to be done and also cites organizations like the Osborne Society that provide parenting and literacy classes, counseling and support. The message is clear: taking family connections into account ‘holds particular promise for restoring a social fabric rent by both crime and punishment.’” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

All American Yemeni Girls
Regular price $29.95 Save $-29.95Based on more than two years of fieldwork conducted in a Yemeni community in southeastern Michigan, this unique study examines Yemeni American girls' attempts to construct and make sense of their identities as Yemenis, Muslims, Americans, daughters of immigrants, teenagers, and high school students. All American Yemeni Girls contributes substantially to our understanding of the impact of religion on students attending public schools and the intersecting roles school and religion play in the lives of Yemeni students and their families. Providing a valuable background on the history of Yemen and the migration of Yemeni people to the United States, this is an eye-opening account of a group of people we hear about every day but about whom we know very little.
Through a series of intensive interviews and field observations, Loukia K. Sarroub discovered that the young Muslim women shared moments of optimism and desperation and struggled to reconcile the America they experienced at school with the Yemeni lives they knew at home. Most significant, Sarroub found that they often perceived themselves as failing at being both American and Yemeni. Offering a distinctive analysis of the ways ethnicity, culture, gender, and socioeconomic status complicate lives, Sarroub examines how these students view their roles within American and Yemeni societies, between institutions such as the school and the family, between ethnic and Islamic visions of success in the United States. Sarroub argues that public schools serve as a site of liberation and reservoir of contested hope for students and teachers questioning competing religious and cultural pressures. The final chapter offers a rich and important discussion of how conditions in the United States encourage the rise of extremism and allow it to flourish, raising pressing questions about the role of public education in the post-September 11 world.
All American Yemeni Girls offers a fine-grained and compelling portrait of these young Muslim women and their endeavors to succeed in American society, and it brings us closer to understanding an oft-cited but little researched population.

The three men sit anxiously in their bullet-shaped projectile, ready for take-off. After the launch, their series of adventures and misadventures begin. Barbicane, Nicholl, and Michael must be quick and clever, as they brave an encounter with an asteroid, suffer accidental intoxication, deviate from their course, and face the consequences of miscalculation. Finally, they arrive at the moon. However, instead of landing on the moon like the group planned, their spaceship is stuck in the moon’s orbit. Still, Barbicane, Nicholl, and Michael are in awe. As they gaze upon the moon’s intricate features, memorizing its landscape and craters, the three men realize that they have the sole privilege of seeing the moon—an observation that no man or woman on Earth had yet achieved. But as they dream of the fame and luxurious treatment they are sure to gain back on Earth, another misstep threatens their trip again, and this time, the consequences could be fatal.

All Consuming
Regular price $32.00 Save $-32.00An engaging 700-year history of meat at the intersection of German and Jewish culture, uniquely illuminating the rich, fraught, and tragic history of German Jewry.
In Judaism, meat is of paramount importance as it constitutes the very focal point of the dietary laws. With an intricate set of codified regulations concerning forbidden and permissible meats, highly prescribed methods of killing, and elaborate rules governing consumption, meat is one of the most visible, and gustatory, markers of Jewish distinctness and social separation. It is an object of tangible, touchable, and tastable difference like no other.
In All Consuming, historian John M. Efron focuses on the contested culture of meat and its role in the formation of ethnic identities in Germany. To an extent not seen elsewhere in Europe, Germans have identified, thought about, studied, decried, and gladly eaten meat understood to be "Jewish." Expressions of this engagement are found across the cultural landscape—in literature, sculpture, and visual arts—and evident in legal codes and commercial enterprises. Likewise, Jews in Germany have vigorously defended their meats and the culture and rituals surrounding them by educating Germans and Jews alike about their meaning and relevance.
Exploring a cultural history that extends some seven hundred years, from the Middle Ages to today, Efron goes beyond a discussion of dietary laws and ritual slaughter to take a broad view of what meat can tell us about German-Jewish identity and culinary culture, Jewish and Christian religious sensibilities, and religious freedom for minorities in Germany. In so doing, he provides a singular window into the rich, fraught, and ultimately tragic history of German Jewry.

All Deliberate Speed
Regular price $95.00 Save $-95.00The book also considers California's unique demographics and educational landscape, underscoring the state’s role as a battleground for integration policies due to its diverse ethnic composition. The state has a significant population of minorities, including people of Asian, Latin American, Polynesian, Black, and Native American descent, who have historically faced varying levels of discrimination in education. Unlike studies focused on Eastern states, this book highlights California's distinct educational challenges and offers a regional perspective on national integration issues. The narrative centers on how each ethnic group navigated these challenges, actively seeking ways to leverage the educational system for social mobility, while facing resistance that led them to turn to the courts for justice.
Despite the author’s personal belief in integration, the book refrains from presenting the subject as a clear moral dichotomy. Instead, it examines the varied motivations behind both integrationist and segregationist stances, revealing that intentions range from promoting equal opportunity to preserving community heritage or opposing enforced assimilation. The study frames California's educational history as a conflict between universalist ideals of national values and the particularist values of local communities. By viewing the ongoing battles for school desegregation as a reflection of deeply rooted beliefs in the power of education and the judiciary, the book ultimately underscores the enduring faith that Americans place in these institutions to shape a more equitable society.
This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1976.

All Ears
Regular price $28.00 Save $-28.00The world of international politics has recently been rocked by a seemingly endless series of scandals involving auditory surveillance: the NSA’s warrantless wiretapping is merely the most sensational example of what appears to be a universal practice today. What is the source of this generalized principle of eavesdropping?
All Ears: The Aesthetics of Espionage traces the long history of moles from the Bible, through Jeremy Bentham’s “panacoustic” project, all the way to the intelligence-gathering network called “Echelon.” Together with this archeology of auditory surveillance, Szendy offers an engaging account of spycraft’s representations in literature (Sophocles, Shakespeare, Joyce, Kafka, Borges), opera (Monteverdi, Mozart, Berg), and film (Lang, Hitchcock, Coppola, De Palma).
Following in the footsteps of Orpheus, the book proposes a new concept of “overhearing” that connects the act of spying to an excessive intensification of listening. At the heart of listening Szendy locates the ear of the Other that manifests itself as the originary division of a “split-hearing” that turns the drive for mastery and surveillance into the death drive.

All Else Is Folly
Regular price $32.95 Save $-32.95One of Canada’s most painful and breathtaking pictures of a soldier’s life during the First World War.
Peregrine Acland’s novel All Else Is Folly is an irreplaceable depiction of the Canadian experience in the First World War. More than just a devastating portrayal of the terrors and hardships of trench warfare, the novel is also a profound meditation on the nature of man, one that draws on both the Nietzschean notion of man as warrior and Havelock Ellis’s idea of man as lover. Subtitled "a tale of war and passion," the novel was something of a bestseller in its time and drew significant critical praise. Canadian Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden remarked: "No more vivid picture has been painted of what war meant to the average soldier."
Originally published in 1929, Acland’s war story had transatlantic success, with editions published under the Constable imprint in England, and by Coward-McCann and Grosset & Dunlap in the United States. The Canadian edition published by McClelland & Stewart enjoyed three printings. This new edition marks a return to print after more than eight decades.
