The emergence and adoption of metallurgy is one of the seminal topics of investigation in the history of archaeology, particularly in the history of archaeological research in Southeast Asia. The site of Ban Chiang, Thailand, is a central site in debates surrounding the chronology and significance of early metallurgy in the region. This book is the first in a series of four volumes that review the contributions of Ban Chiang and three related sites in northeast Thailand excavated by the Penn Museum to an understanding early metallurgy in Thailand.

As the study of archaeometallurgy is a complex topic that draws on numerous technical and social science disciplines, this introductory volume presents in several chapters the background needed to assess the metal and related evidence presented in the subsequent volumes in this series. A history of perspectives on the role of metals in ancient societies generally and Southeast Asia, specifically, is provided. Other chapters debunk the conventional paradigm for understanding metals and society and provide current theoretical perspectives and new paradigms for the study of ancient metals. The geological basis for the presence and location of metal ore resources in the region is reviewed. The final chapter presents a technical overview of ways material properties of ancient metals may be studied. While providing a background to the study of metals at Ban Chiang, the volume also reviews, synthesizes, and repositions the method and theory for the study of archaeometallurgy generally.

The foundation of archaeometallurgy is the study of excavated assemblages of metals and related remains. This volume presents in detail how the metals and such remains as crucibles excavated from four sites in northeast Thailand have been studied to understand the place of metal objects and technology in the ancient past of this region.

In addition to typological examination, hundreds of technical analyses reveal the technological capabilities, preferences, and styles of metal artifact manufacturers in this part of Thailand. Detailed examination of contexts of recovery of metal remains employing a "life history" approach indicates that metal objects in those societies were used primarily in daily life and, only occasionally, as grave goods. The most surprising find is that casting of copper-base artifacts to final form took place at all these village sites during the metal age period, indicating a decentralized final production stage that may prove to be unusual for metal age societies. These insights are made possible by applying the methods and theories introduced in the first volume of the suite of volumes that study the metal remains from Ban Chiang in regional contest.

This third volume in the series is devoted to presenting and interpreting the metallurgical evidence from Ban Chiang, northeast Thailand, in the broader regional context. Because the production of metal artifacts must engage numerous communities in order to acquire and process the raw materials and then create and distribute products, understanding metals in past societies requires a regional perspective. This is the first book to compile, summarize, and synthesize the English-language copper production and exchange evidence available so far from Thailand and Laos in a thorough and systematic manner.

Chapters by Vincent C. Pigott and Thomas O. Pryce examine in detail the mining and smelting of copper in several sites, and the lead-isotope evidence for the sourcing of artifacts found in two of the consumption sites included in the study. Another chapter compiles the metal consumption evidence, including results of technical studies on prehistoric metals recovered from more than 35 sites excavated in central and northeast Thailand. This compilation demonstrates important regional variation in chaînes opératoires, allowing explication and synthesis of the technological traditions found in this region during prehistory. The review and compilation sheds new light on the social and economic context for the adoption and development of metallurgy in this part of the world. One key insight is that Thailand presents a case for a "community-driven bronze age," where the choices of peaceful local communities, not elites or centralized political entities, shaped how metal technological systems were implemented in this region.

This fresh perspective on the role of metallurgy in ancient societies contributes to an expanded global understanding of how humans have engaged metal technologies, contributing to debunking the conventional paradigm that emphasized a top-down view and a standardized metallurgical sequence, a paradigm that has dominated archeometallurgical studies for the last century or more.

During the 1950s, Michael Randle helped pioneer a new form of direct action against nuclear war, based on the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. At the forefront of the British campaign, he worked closely with Peace News editor Hugh Brock (1914–1985) and other distinguished ‘anti-nuclear pacifists’ such as Pat Arrowsmith, April Carter, and Ian Dixon, serving as chairman of the Direct Action Committee against Nuclear War (1958-1961) and secretary of the Committee of 100 (1960-1961).

In 1966, he helped ‘spring’ the Russian spy George Blake from Wormwood Scrubs Prison. Thereafter, he campaigned vigorously on behalf of the Greek democratic opposition, conscientious objectors, and Soviet dissidents. He has always been a man of rare candor and singular energy and principles, even enduring imprisonment for his beliefs.

Nowadays, Michael lives in Shipley near Bradford, where he continues to write as a respected expert on ‘people power’. Martin Levy’s interviews with Michael Randle introduce the reader to a tumultuous life that is nothing short of extraordinary.

The book includes recent articles on various topics studied recently in Banach algebras and abstract harmonic analysis. On the Banach algebra side, the reader will find idempotents and socle of a Banach algebra; closed subspaces of a Banach space, including the classical sequence spaces, which are realized as the kernel of a bounded operator; the connection between the stable rank one and Dedekind-finite property of the algebra of operators on a Banach space; spectral synthesis properties in convolution Sobolev algebras on the real line.

The harmonic analysis side includes a generalization of the famous Beurling theorem; groups with few finite-dimensional unitary representations; relations between ideals of the Figa-Talamanca Herz algebra of a locally compact group and ideals of Figa-Talamanca Herz algebra of its closed subgroup; the tame functionals on Banach algebras and in harmonic analysis; and cancellation, factorization, and isometries in algebras on a locally compact group.

The book also includes four surveys written by leaders in the area of full sheaf cohomology theory for noncommutative C - algebras; one-parameter semigroups of bounded operators on a Banach space which are weakly continuous in the sense of Arveson.

In recent years there has been a surge of profound new developments in various aspects of analysis whose connecting thread is the use of Banach space methods. Indeed, many problems seemingly far from the classical geometry of Banach spaces have been solved using Banach space techniques.

This volume contains papers by participants of the conference "Banach Spaces and their Applications in Analysis", held in May 2006 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in honor of Nigel Kalton's 60th birthday. Blood disease of banana is a bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia syzygii subsp. celebesensis. The symptoms of Blood disease include wilting, chlorosis and necrosis of leaves, red/brown vascular staining, and pulp-rot of the fruit. The disease was first reported in 1905 from southern Sulawesi and was contained in that area, but has in the last 30 years spread across much of Indonesia and more recently to Malaysia. The disease causes significant crop losses where it occurs. This chapter gives an overview of the pathogen, the disease cycle with special emphasis on the mode of transmission. It has been shown that local dispersal is predominantly through mechanical transmission of the bacterium by insects, birds, bats and tools from diseased to healthy banana plants while long-distance dispersal is through the movement of contaminated planting materials. The chapter concludes with an overview of potential disease management and control options.

This chapter reviews current knowledge on banana bunchy top disease, the most important virus disease of banana, worldwide. It provides an overview of the historical aspects of the disease and the early studies, outlines the symptoms of the disease and biological characteristics of the pathogen related to host range, transmission and spread. This is followed by an overview of control strategies which involve detection of the pathogen, its epidemiology and resistance in the host and how this can be used in management strategies.

For well over a century, the United Fruit Company (UFCO) has been the most vilified multinational corporation operating in Latin America. Criticism of the UFCO has been widespread, ranging from politicians to consumer activists, and from labor leaders to historians, all portraying it as an overwhelmingly powerful corporation that shaped and often exploited its host countries. In this first history of the UFCO in Colombia, Marcelo Bucheli argues that the UFCO's image as an all-powerful force in determining national politics needs to be reconsidered. Using a previously unexplored source—the internal archives of Colombia's UFCO operation—Bucheli reveals that before 1930, the UFCO worked alongside a business-friendly government that granted it generous concessions and repressed labor unionism. After 1930, however, the country experienced dramatic transformations including growing nationalism, a stronger labor movement, and increasing demands by local elites for higher stakes in the banana export business.
In response to these circumstances, the company abandoned production, selling its plantations (and labor conflicts) to local growers, while transforming itself into a marketing company. The shift was endorsed by the company's shareholders and financial analysts, who preferred lower profits with lower risks, and came at a time in which the demand for bananas was decreasing in America. Importantly, Bucheli shows that the effect of foreign direct investment was not unidirectional. Instead, the agency of local actors affected corporate strategy, just as the UFCO also transformed local politics and society.

Following the completion of the Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde, containing nearly 5,000 entries on the archaeology, history and philology of North and Central Europe from the first millennium BC to the first millennium AD, two volumes of indices to this remarkable work are presented here. Apart from indices of authors and key words, as well as selected terms, there is also a systematic index arranged by subject and historical context, thus facilitating access via simple and complex key words and their thematic relationships within the lexicon.

Selbst seine kritischen Rezensenten mussten einräumen, dass Vulpius (1762 - 1827) insbesondere nach dem Erfolg seines Räuberromans Rinaldo Rinaldini (1799) zu den wahrhaft populären Autoren seiner Zeit zu zählen war, 'berühmt wie ein Sprichwort'. Trotz etlicher Versuche im hohen Stil tragischer Formen, die selbst am Wiener Hoftheater Beachtung fanden, wurde er mit über 30 dramatischen Texte und annähernd 70 Romanen zu einem der meistgelesenen Unterhaltungsautoren der Goethezeit, dem selbst Thomas Mann in "Lotte in Weimar" seinen Tribut nicht versagte. Wenngleich die literarische Kritik mitunter wünschte, dass seine 'Fruchtbarkeit nicht permanent' sei, gelang es Goethes Schwager Vulpius, ausgehend vom galanten Unterhaltungston Wielands, vor allem erzählende Genres zu entwickeln, deren Montagetechnik unmittelbar auf die serielle Produktion der Kolportageromane des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts wirkte. Verblüffend muss der heutige Leser konstatieren, dass auf dem Revers der glänzenden Medaille Weimarer Klassik eine 'triviale Klassik' ihre Spuren hinterlassen hat.

Die vorliegende mit einer umfangreichen Einführung versehene Ausgabe seiner Korrespondenz umfasst etwa 750 Briefe von und ca. 160 Briefe an Vulpius, die das gesamte Feld seiner Tätigkeit erschließen und eine Innenperspektive der Organisation kultureller Institutionen des Klassischen Weimar eröffnen. Ergänzt um mehrere Hundert amtliche Schriften und erschlossene Briefe, über die in Regestform berichtet wird, dokumentiert dieses Briefkorpus verwaltungstechnische wie ästhetische Entscheidungsprozesse innerhalb des Herzoglichen Hoftheaters, für das Vulpius als Dramaturg Goethes die Bühneneinrichtungen nahezu sämtlicher Opern und Singspiele in den 1790er Jahren vornahm und vor allem der Herzoglichen Bibliothek, in der er eine Karriere vom Registrator bis zum die Geschäfte leitenden Herzoglichen Bibliothekar durchlief. Vor allem als von den Zeitgenossen geschätzter Verfasser und Herausgeber vorwiegend lokalhistorischer Zeitschriften wie Die Vorzeit und den Curiositäten hat auch Vulpius seinen Anteil an der Entwicklung öffentlichkeitsorientierter Strukturen des kollektiven Gedächtnisses.

Der zweite Band enthält einen umfassenden philologisch-historischen Kommentar.

Der erste Band des vierteiligen Lehrbuchs Medientechnisches Wissen führt in die Themen Logik, Informations- und Speichertheorie sowie Archäologie für Medienwissenschaftler:innen ein. Ziel ist es, Studierenden und Dozierenden der Medienwissenschaften ein Lehrwerk in die Hand zu geben, in welchem die formalwissenschaftlichen, fachwissenschaftlichen und technischen Grundlagen thematisch relevanter Disziplinen kleinschrittig vermittelt werden. Das bio-bibliographische Handbuch verzeichnet deutschsprachige Rechtswissenschaftler, die in Folge der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten verfolgt wurden, emigrierten und in den jeweiligen Aufnahmeländern weiterhin wissenschaftlich tätig waren. Die insgesamt 48 Personeneinträge und 15 Kurzbiographien in beiden Bänden enthalten biographische Angaben zu Herkunft, Ausbildung, Lehr- und Forschungstätigkeiten sowie Umständen der Amtsvertreibung und Emigration und eine Bibliographie.

Der erste Band führt die Rechtswissenschaftler auf, die nach Europa, Südamerika und Afrika ausgewandert sind. Im zweiten Band wird die Emigration in die USA behandelt.

Während die bisherigen Ausgaben die unvollständige Reinschrift zugrunde legten, wird in der vorliegenden (ersten kritischen) Edition zusätzlich der vollständig erhaltene erste Entwurf herangezogen. Vorangestellt wurden die Auswertung verschiedener Handexemplare und vorbereitende Schriften, die Leibniz bei der Lektüre der 1690 erschienenen Originalausgabe niederschrieb, sowie seine Stellungnahme zum Streit zwischen Locke und Stillingfleet, dem Bischof von Worcester. Der abschließende dritte Teil gibt Leibniz’ Bemerkungen zur Kritik Lockes an Malebranche wieder sowie Berichtigungen seines französischen Sprachgebrauchs, die Leibniz nach Fertigstellung der Reinschrift der „Nouveaux Essais“ von Refugies erbeten hat.
