Scarcely any other movement in architecture and design had such a lasting impact as the Bauhaus; indeed, for many it is synonymous with classic modernism. On the occasion of the institution’s 90th birthday this book traces the themes and the aesthetics of Bauhaus for our time. It shows twelve of the most important works of Bauhaus architecture from 1923-1930 and juxtaposes them with contemporary projects. The sensitive and careful photography by Gordon Watkinson delineate formal and conceptual connections between the classic and the new buildings and thus demonstrate the strong influence that the Bauhaus still exerts today.

In this sense, the "House am Horn" in Weimar by Georg Muche and Adolf Meyer from 1923 corresponds with "House of the Present" in Munich by Allmann Sattler Wappner Architects (2005). House Tugendhat in Brno by Mies van der Rohe, a masterpiece of modern architecture, challenged traditional concepts of housing – just as the experimental House R 128 in Stuttgart by Werner Sobek (2001) did. And the German Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe in Barcelona from 1929 turns out to be a source of inspiration for the Skywood House in Denham, UK, by Graham Phillips some 70 years later.

Die Zentralvereinigung der ArchitektInnen (ZV) wurde 1907 gegründet. 1938 wurde der Verein aufgelöst und die Mitglieder selektiv in die NS-Reichskammer überführt, manche emigrierten. Nach Kriegsende schlossen sich ehemalige Mitglieder als Architektengruppe in der Berufsvereinigung der bildenden Künstler zusammen, die eine wichtige Rolle in der Entnazifizierung übernahm.

Durch das Engagement in Sachen Baukultur gelang es der ZV in der Nachkriegszeit, wieder ihren Status als wichtigste Standesvertretung zu erreichen: 1957 wurden die Standesinteressen der Architektenkammer übertragen, 1959 wurde die ZV als Verein neu gegründet.

Mit Hilfe des Wiener ZV-Archivs beleuchten Wissenschaftlerinnen erstmals den sensiblen Zeitraum von der Auflösung 1938 bis zur Neugründung der ZV als Verein 1959.

What remains of the idea of liquid modernity? Is Bauman’s thought still relevant? This volume aims to answer these questions, without forgetting the vastness and complexity of his work, where the idea of liquidity remains fundamental, before and after the central turning point of the year 2000, when he published Liquid Modernity.
Bauman’s legacy is multiform and complex, subdivided into partial legacies, not all of which are homogeneous and acceptable without benefit of inventory. The first difficulty consists in its complete lack of systematicity: Bauman-thought is by no means a single whole, nor can it be used as a key instrument to be applied to every condition, given that it explicitly concerns a precise fraction of our present. This is not to be understood as an oversight, but a conscious, strongly intended choice to eschew any systematic, systematising formulation of society. He prefers to understand the sociologist’s task as an acute observer, capable of enabling social agents – that is, all human beings – to make the right choices with awareness of its risks, as well as its effects.
Bauman’s legacy leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, because in its very concluding phase it reveals pessimistic implications that seem to contradict his previous positions, so full of hope and confidence in the opportunities for improvement of the humans. The very theorisation of liquidity itself seemed to suggest, in the peaceful understanding of a phase of disorientation, the possibility of rediscovering momentarily forgotten human values, first and foremost social solidarity.

‘Bauman, Elias and Latour on Modernity and Its Alternatives’ provides a synopsis of and comparison between the conceptions of modernity and its alternatives, as found in the works of Bauman, Elias and Latour. Bauman and Elias share a few relevant features bearing on their conceptions of modernity and its possible alternatives; Latour, on the other hand, when compared to these sociologists, is a maverick thinker. The set of alternatives is as follows: modernity vs. post-modernity (Bauman); civilization vs. barbarity (Elias) and successful vs. unsuccessful hybrids (Latour). Bauman’s and Elias’s conceptions of modernity differ in some important respects. The constitutive elements of modernity are, according to Bauman, cognitive order, regulation, stability of relations and identities, and the role of intellectuals as legislators. In Elias’s view, pacification and civilization are the hallmarks of modernity. Both Bauman and Elias maintain, despite their differences, that a condition of barbarity indicates the absence of civilization, but not of modernity.

According to Latour, the scientific usefulness of the concepts of modernity and, by implication, of non-modernity is questionable. If hybrids are defined as heterogeneous associations between humans and non-humans such as instruments and machines, by virtue of their great number they produce a variety of ways in which distinct and incompatible modes of knowledge may be interpreted, defined, and linked. This occurs by means of mediators.

A hybrid condition characterizes the modern world; hence, non-humans are relevant for investigating the modern world as they mediate between nature and society. The latter is a contraposition which Latour rejects, along with those between actor vs. system, science vs. society, nature vs. culture, and humans vs. non-humans. As for this last contraposition, Latour argues that this very distinction results from a process of purification, since humans and non-humans may be actors that form an integrated whole. Modernity therefore results from the two related but opposed processes of hybridization and purification. Much as the very concept of modernity is of questionable usefulness, the concept of non-modernity should also be relinquished. The existence of hybrids makes modernity and non-modernity impossible. In this sense, Latour has contended that we have never been modern. The joint product of human and non-human activities, as resulting in hybrids, may be a failure due, according to Latour, to the mismatch between the human and non-human actors.

In recent years, Baumschlager Eberle architectural practice has successfully continued its international trajector. Between 2010 and 2020, around 600 buildings, projects, and competitions have been completed, including housing projects, hospitals, compnay headquarters, university campuses, and the 2226 building: an office building without Hearing System.

The book documents in chronological order in the form of of an annotated and commented catalogue of works all projects, competitions, and studies of these years. Over 50 completed buildings are comprehensively presented. 14 of the most important projects have an in-depth presentation: with images, plans, and other material as well as a detailed text.

In addition, three essays and three interviews deal with the central issues of density, resources, and open building.

Das Buch dokumentiert in Form eines kommentierten Werkverzeichnisses in chronologischer Reihenfolge alle Projekte, Wettbewerbe und Studien dieser Jahre. Über 50 realisierte Bauten werden ausführlicher behandelt, 14 der wichtigsten davon werden vertieft mit zahlreichen Bildern, Plänen, Materialien und einem detaillierten Text präsentiert.

Darüber hinaus befassen sich drei Essays und drei Interviews mit den zentralen Themen Dichte, Ressourcen und Open Building.

Kern des Selbstverständnisses von Baumschlager-Eberle ist es, Architektur als eine ganzheitliche Aufgabe zu betrachten, deren Komplexität erst dann erfüllt ist, wenn ein Gebäude allen Anforderungen, wie konstruktive Intelligenz, Ökologie, Wirtschaftlichkeit und gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz, entspricht.

Das Buch trägt diesem Ansatz Rechnung und gliedert sich inhaltlich in drei Teile:

In 'Architektur' werden 18 neue, realisierte Projekte des Büros vorgestellt, klassisch, anhand von Bildern, Texten und Plänen.

'Menschen' beleuchtet den Gebrauchsaspekt einiger ausgewählter Bauten und geht der Frage nach deren gesellschaftlicher Akzeptanz nach.

'Ressourcen' überprüft alle in diesem Rahmen vorgestellten Objekte auf ihre Nachhaltigkeit.

Ein klassischer Kurs über die Gegenstände der Bauphysik: Wärmeschutz – Schallschutz – Brandschutz, ergänzt durch zahlreiche Beispiele, Bilder und Tabellen. Das Buch bietet einen Überblick zum derzeitigen Stand der Bauphysik, gestützt auf die verbindlichen Grundlagen der europäischen Normung. Dabei werden die relevanten Inhalte der Bauproduktenrichtlinie und nachfolgender Richtlinien der EU ebenso berücksichtigt wie nationale Regelungen. Die im Band angeführten Beispiele sind mehrheitlich zugleich die Grundlage für weiterführende Bauteilbeschreibungen in den Folgebänden der Reihe Baukonstruktionen und ermöglichen somit eine besonders umfassende Betrachtungsweise. Die zweite Auflage wurde insbesondere mit Blick auf Energiekennzahlen überarbeitet.

Der erste Erweiterungsband zur Bauphysik (Band 1 der Reihe Baukonstruktionen) befasst sich mit der Umsetzung der EU-Richtlinie zur Gesamtenergieeffizienz von Gebäuden (EPBD) sowie mit der österreichischen OIB-Richtlinie 6 zur Harmonisierung bautechnischer Vorschriften in Österreich, die seit 2007 existiert und nun ab 2017 zur verbindlichen Vorschrift wird. Es werden die exakten Rechenverfahren erläutert und Näherungsmethoden für Neu- und Sanierungsplanung und Erfassung des Bestandes vorgestellt. Für die dritte Auflage wurden die Rechenverfahren ergänzt und aktualisiert. Der Band wendet sich vor allem an die Praktiker in Architektur- und Planungsbüros, aber auch an Immobilienbüros und Developer.

Die Fassade ist die Schnittstelle des Gebäudes mit seiner Umwelt. Dort treffen bauphysikalische Parameter wie Wärme, Feuchte, Schall und Licht auf das Haus und wirken auf es ein. Alle diese Einflüsse bedürfen der Regulierung durch die Gebäudehülle, um Behaglichkeit für den Nutzer und Funktionstüchtigkeit der Architektur zu gewährleisten. Diese Einführung erläutert die wichtigsten Phänomene, um dann den Bezug zur Baupraxis herzustellen: Welche Materialien reagieren in welcher Weise auf diese Faktoren? Wie gehen Fassadensystemen mit Wärme, Feuchte, Schall und Licht um? Das praxisorientierte Buch, entstanden aus der Zusammenarbeit eines Architekten und eines Bauingenieurs, beschreibt die wichtigsten Fassadenmaterialien und -konstruktionen im Hinblick auf ihre bauphysikalische Performance.

In mittelalterlichen Erzählungen treten unzählige Dinge auf, die über den Status als bloß ‚Zuhandenes‘ weit hinausreichen. Unbelebt und dabei doch höchst ‚aktiv‘ scheinen diese Gegenstände das Geschehen in irgendeiner Weise mitzubestimmen. Woher ein Ding kommt und wohin es geht, wem es gehört(e), wie und wann man es benutzt etc. – all das ist nicht selten von entscheidender Bedeutung.
Umso irritierender ist der Befund, dass Dinge momentan als weitgehend ‚blinder Fleck‘ auf der erzähltheoretischen Landkarte zu bezeichnen sind und eher beiläufig den primären Erzählkonstituenten Figur – Handlung – Raum zugeordnet werden. Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt hier mehrere Ansatzpunkte für eine narratologische Aufwertung auf.
Die theoretischen Überlegungen werden anhand der Untersuchung von Veldekes Eneasroman im Vergleich mit dem altfranzösischen Roman d’Eneas und Vergils Aeneis exemplarisch auf die Erzählanalyse übertragen. Dabei wird deutlich, wie unterschiedlich Dinge teilweise zwischen den drei Erzählungen verhandelt werden – und welche spezifischen Interpretationsmöglichkeiten das eröffnen kann.

Bavarian syntax is widely known for its productive „Doubly-Filled COMP“ (DFC) property and for the rare phenomenon of inflecting complementizers. It is less widely known that DFC also extends to declaratives. Topicalization out of a preposed CP can leave a gap, with various consequences. DFC is in addition not available as unconditionally as previously thought. Short wh-words seem to blur the traditional division between heads (C) and phrases (wh-XP). As for the inner clausal syntax, Bavarian shows hierarchically organized discourse particles among which the clitic version ‘n of the particle denn plays a distinct role. Various tests as well as empirical investigations suggests that ‘n has lost its semantic residues and has turned into a wh-agreement marker.

The studies presented in this book are relevant for anyone interested in German morpho-syntax and in syntactic theory, linguistic micro-variation, comparative Germanic and historical linguistics. This was far from Rustin’s first foray into the fight for civil rights. As a world-traveling pacifist, he brought Gandhi’s protest techniques to the forefront of US civil rights demonstrations, helped build the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, led the fight for economic justice, and played a deeply influential role in the life of Dr. King by helping to mold him into an international symbol of nonviolent resistance. Despite these achievements, Rustin was often relegated to the background. Ludwig I., der Gründer der Neuen Pinakothek, hat neben seiner Sammlung zeitgenössischer Malerei von Angelika Kauffmann bis Arnold Böcklin auch Skulpturen bedeutender Bildhauer wie Antonio Canova und Bertel Thorvaldsen angekauft. Hinzu kamen etliche Büsten von Bildhauern wie Christian Daniel Rauch und Friedrich Tieck, die ursprünglich für die Walhalla oder die Ruhmeshalle bestimmt waren. Schließlich ließ der König durch Bildhauer wie Johann Halbig zahlreiche Dichter sowie Maler porträtieren, von denen er zuvor Gemälde erworben hatte. Auf diese Weise entstand eine außergewöhnliche Sammlung von Porträtbüsten aus Gips, die als Pantheon zeitgenössischer Künstler in der Neuen Pinakothek aufgestellt war. Alle diese Skulpturen aus der Sammlung Ludwigs I. wurden nun erstmals wissenschaftlich bearbeitet. Der vorliegende Band, der erste des auf drei Bände angelegten Bestandskataloges sämtlicher Skulpturen des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Neuen Pinakothek, stellt die Werke in farbigen Neuaufnahmen vor und beleuchtet den Kontext ihrer Entstehung.

Adolf von Hildebrand gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Bildhauer in Deutschland um 1900. Sein reiches Schaffen entfaltete sich zwischen der Münchner Prinzregentenzeit und der Italienbegeisterung der Deutsch-Römer. Er befreite die Bildhauerei des 19. Jahrhunderts von jedem überflüssigem Dekor und wurde so zu einem Wegbereiter der Moderne. Schon früh gelangten Werke des Künstlers in die Sammlung der Neuen Pinakothek und konnten durch den Erwerb des Werkstattnachlasses zu einem einzigartigen Bestand von über 200 Werken wachsen. Neben vollendeten Arbeiten finden sich darunter Modelle für Idealplastiken, Reliefs, Bildnisse, Architekturen, Brunnen, Denkmäler und Grabmäler. In dem durchgehend illustrierten Bestandskatalog werden die Werke von Fabian Pius Huber zum ersten Mal im Detail erfasst und mit dem Gesamtwerk des Künstlers und seiner Zeit in Beziehung gebracht. Bereichert wird der Katalog durch Beiträge u. a. von Bernhard Maaz „Adolf von Hildebrand – Werk und Mensch in seiner Zeit", und Franziska Kolba „Der Werkprozess bei Adolf von Hildebrand".

Das Allgemeine Künstlerlexikon (AKL) ist Nachfolger der traditionsreichen kunsthistorischen Standardwerke Thieme-Becker und Vollmer und erscheint seit 1991. Selbst längst ein Standardwerk, beschränkt es sich bewusst nicht auf die großen Meister: bildende Künstler aus aller Welt und aus allen Zeiten, von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart, werden aufgenommen. Enthalten sind nicht nur Maler, Bildhauer oder Graphiker, sondern auch Architekten, Designer, Fotografen, Schriftkünstler, Kunsthandwerker u.v.m. Rund 1.500 Künstlerbiographien werden für jeden Band zusammengestellt. Nach jeweils zehn Bänden erscheint ein Register nach Ländern und künstlerischen Berufen.

Mit dem aktualisierten Editionsplan wird die Printausgabe im Jahr 2022 abgeschlossen. Dafür wird der Anteil von Artikeln verstärkt, die nur online erscheinen.

Die ersten Bände des AKL wurden bereits ab 1969 bearbeitet, dieser Zeitraum von fast vier Jahrzehnten wird nun in Nachträgen aufgearbeitet. Nachtragsband I, der die Nachtragsartikel zum Buchstaben A enthält, ist 2005 erschienen. 2012 erschien der fünfte Nachtragsband (Cassini – Czwartos).
