In 9/11 Imaginaria: Writing Catastrophe, Memory, and the War on Terror, Robert Moscaliuc explores how literature and cultural narratives have shaped and been shaped by the events of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent “War on Terror.” In an effort to move beyond conventional discussions of trauma and representation, Moscaliuc introduces the concept of the selfish event—a cultural phenomenon so overwhelming that it absorbs and reshapes surrounding narratives to ensure its dominance in collective memory.

Divided into two parts, the book first examines post-9/11 fiction, tracing how the attacks disrupted storytelling and perception by drawing from works by Don DeLillo, Cormac McCarthy, Mark Doten, and others. The second part shifts to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, presenting the proximal-ancillary coverage continuum, a framework that differentiates between immediate media-driven representations and reflective literary accounts by authors like Elliot Ackerman, Phil Klay, Michael Pitre, Roy Scranton, and others.

Moscaliuc’s work ultimately explores the intersections of fiction, memory, and power, challenging readers to reconsider how literature not only represents catastrophe but also actively shapes its meaning.

Even though much has been said and written about 9/11, the work developed on this subject has mostly explored it as an unparalleled event, a turning point in history. This book wishes to look instead at how disruptive events promote a network of associations and how people resort to comparison as a means to make sense of the unknown, i.e. to comprehend what seems incomprehensible. In order to effectively discuss the complexity of 9/11, this book articulates different fields of knowledge and perspectives such as visual culture, media studies, performance studies, critical theory, memory studies and literary studies to shed some light on 9/11 and analyze how the event has impacted on American social and cultural fabric and how the American society has come to terms with such a devastating event. A more in-depth study of Don DeLillo’s Falling Man and Jonathan Safran Foer’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close draws attention to the cultural construction of catastrophe and the plethora of cultural products 9/11 has inspired. It demonstrates how the event has been integrated into American culture and exemplifies what makes up the 9/11 imaginary.

Die Studie stellt den Einsatz der Keltologie für die politisch-militärischen Ziele des Kaiserreichs und des Dritten Reichs durch die Wissenschaftler selbst erstmals umfassend dar. Die Verflechtung von wissenschaftlicher und politisch-militärischer Agenda geht auf dem Gebiet der Keltologie im wesentlichen auf die Person Kuno Meyers und seine Verbindungen zu alldeutschen Kreisen in Berlin zurück. Die Darstellung seiner Aktivitäten in Deutschland und Irland nimmt daher breiten Raum ein; sein USA-Aufenthalt während des Ersten Weltkriegs wird hier zum ersten Mal eingehend untersucht.

Die bedeutende Rolle der Keltologie und ihrer führenden Vertreter in der Herstellung enger Beziehungen zwischen der kaiserlichen Regierung, Roger Casement, dem Clann na nGael und Sinn Féin wird minutiös nachgezeichnet. Zugleich wird das Verhältnis der führenden irischen Nationalisten zum kaiserlichen Deutschland beleuchtet.

Der zweite Teil behandelt das politische und wissenschaftspolitische Engagement der nächsten Wissenschaftlergeneration, die sich im Dritten Reich fast ausnahmslos den politischen und militärischen Zielen des Nationalsozialismus verschrieb und diese aktiv durch 'wissenschaftliche' Einsätze in Deutschland, Irland und der Bretagne zu befördern suchte.

Die Studie zeigt, daß Keltologie im Zeitalter des deutschen Imperialismus ein Lehrstück für die Multifunktionalität von Wissenschaft ist: Wegbereiter der Völkerfreundschaft zwischen Iren und Deutschen im Frieden, akademische Speerspitze machtpolitisch-rassistisch motivierter Aggression im Kriege.

Das Phänomen der Intertextualität in der Frühen Neuzeit - und damit auch in der neulateinischen Dichtung - ist Literaturwissenschaftlern seit längerer Zeit vertraut. Gleichwohl fehlte es bislang an Studien, die sich in historischem oder systematischem Zugriff mit speziellen Verfahren der Adaptation von Einzeltexten oder Textklassen auseinandersetzen. Auf der Grundlage neuerer texttypologischer und funktionsgeschichtlicher Forschungsansätze wird jetzt erstmals eine Sequenz von Fallstudien zur Verwendung intertextueller Schreibstrategien wie Parodie, Kontrafaktur oder Cento in der lateinischen Literatur Europas zwischen dem 15. und dem 17. Jahrhundert vorgelegt.

Ob Handy oder Haussprechanlage, Funk oder Fax: Elektronische Kommunikationsmedien sind in unserer Gesellschaft allgegenwärtig. Wo auch immer Menschen räumlich voneinander getrennt miteinander kommunizieren wollen, ist heute meist moderne Technik im Spiel. Vielfach sind solche Medien wie Strom und Wasser kaum mehr aus dem Alltag wegzudenken und gelten allgemein als gesellschaftlich etabliert. Selbstverständlich ist diese Akzeptanz nicht. Das beste Beispiel dafür ist das Telefon. Anfangs taten sich die Menschen mit der ungewohnten Gesprächssituation schwer. Kaum jemand erinnert sich heute aber noch der Geburtsschmerzen dieses neuen Mediums. Sehr viel gegenwärtiger sind uns aber Probleme mit Anrufbeantwortern. Viele von uns haben die kommunikative Kinderstube des Geräts miterleben und teils auch miterleiden dürfen. Die Studie beschäftigt sich daher mit der Frage, worin die Schwierigkeiten dieser besonderen Form fernmündlicher Kommunikation liegen und wie sie zu bewältigen sind. Dabei betrachtet die Arbeit die Kommunikation aus gesprächanalytischer Perspektive und behandelt den Wechsel aus Ansage und Anruf als Reduktionsform des Gesprächs. Zu diesem Zweck basiert die Studie sowohl auf Ansagetexten als auch den dazugehörigen 435 Nachrichten, die Menschen auf Band hinterlassen haben.

Die Untersuchung zeigt, daß das Sprechen auf einen Anrufbeantworter eine hochkomplexe Aufgabe ist. Die Kommunikation bewegt sich in gleich mehreren Spannungsfeldern: Mündlichkeit vs. Schriftlichkeit, Dialog vs. Monolog, interpersonale vs. Massenkommunikation. Darin ist das Medium einzigartig: in den Anforderungen und auch in jenen Phänomenen im Aneignungsprozeß, die die Untersuchung über mehrere Jahre hinweg hat beobachten können.

Although no less an authority than Joseph A. Schumpeter proclaimed that Antonio Serra was the world’s first economist, he remains something of a dark horse of economic historiography. Nearly nothing is known about Serra except that he wrote and died in jail, and his ‘Short Treatise’ is so rare that only nine original copies are known to have survived the ravages of time. What, then, can a book written nearly four centuries ago tell us about the problems we now face? Serra’s key insight, studying the economies of Venice and Naples, was that wealth was not the result of climate or providence but of policies to develop economic activities subject to increasing returns to scale and a large division of labour. Through a very systematic taxonomy of economic life, Serra then went on from this insight to theorize the causes of the wealth of nations and the measures through which a weak, dependent economy could achieve worldly melioration.

At a time when leading economists return to biological explanations for the failure of their theories, the ‘Short Treatise’ can remind us that there are elements of history which numbers and graphs cannot convey or encompass, and that there are less despondent lessons to be learned from our past. Serra’s remarkable tract is introduced by a lengthy and illuminating study of his historical context and legacy for the theoretical and cultural history of economics.
