Proceedings of the international symposium, “Language Planning in Capitals and Urban Environments,” held March 25–26, 2010 at the University of Ottawa, with sponsorship from the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute, Canadian Heritage, the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages and the City of Ottawa.

The Language Planning in Capitals and Urban Environments Symposium brought together administrators and researchers from Canadian and European cities to discuss language planning in urban environments. Two important concepts emerged from the proceedings: municipal bilingualism as an asset that deserves to be promoted, rather than merely a question of regulation; and bilingualism as a symbol of openness and inclusion that cities can use to advantage to distinguish themselves from their competitors.

This book reflects the experience of one of Canada's most experienced urbanists. The vast majority of Canadians live in cities, and this trend will accelerate. Yet, discussion of urban requirements, policy and agendas barely registers for many citizens.

In this important book, François Lapointe, a practicing urbanist, provides a distinctive analysis of urban reality and an imaginative and thought-provoking vision of a sustainable, healthy, and resilient urban future.

He asks essential questions: What do we see in Cities? What does it tell us? What do we need to do about it? Cities as crucibles is a challenging read on governance and urbanism.

Much of the waste in public administration is ascribable to the displacement of the primary concern for performance and coordination by a primary concern for redistribution. In each sphere of activities, it has led to unreasonable rules inspired by egalitarianism that have triggered permanent allocational malefits.

The failure to confront the progressivist ethos and culture has rendered any action on the managerial front ineffective. First, the authors underscore the seemingly unanimous diagnosis of waste and dysfunctions in Canada’s federal public service and show that efforts to correct the situation have failed. This failure is ascribable to a fundamental incapacity to deal concurrently with the ill-advised managerial decisions of governments and the perverse progressivist philosophy inspiring them. Second, an MRI of the human resource (HR) regimes has been sketched as a guide to the detoxing and modernization of the HR regimes.

It was used to spell out some guidelines for the modification of management structures and competencies, and to probe the cultural underground of moral contracts that would need to underpin the new arrangements.

Cybersecurity is often examined through the lens of national security and organizational risks, focusing on data breaches and the technical and legal measures to prevent, address, and mitigate them. However, another critical dimension is the impact on individual security and dignity.

This edited collection explores the legal and technical aspects of self-security, addressing issues such as technology-facilitated abuse, social media, the sharing culture, and reputational harm.

With a distinct Canadian focus, it examines how the country’s policies, laws, and practices shape cybersecurity and individual protection. By providing insights into safeguarding personal security in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, this collection serves as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and individuals alike.

The past few decades have been witness to a number of important developments with respect to the global intellectual property (IP) system, including shifts in focus between multilateralism and bilateralism/regionalism; growing recognition of the various ways in which IP intersects with and impacts areas including human rights, development, trade, and social justice; broad acknowledgement of the economic value of many IP rights; and important theoretical interventions that have challenged the values underlying the global IP system.

These developments have occurred alongside several other events, changes, and crises that have altered the landscape of our global communities. Chief among them are climate change; armed conflicts; the COVID-19 pandemic; economic changes to work; technological shifts including those relating to the internet and artificial intelligence, and their role in society; and growing recognition of the inequities that exist within and between societies as well as the ways in which these inequities are reinforced and maintained through systemic discrimination and ongoing colonialism.

Given these developments, changes, and crises, what is the future of IP law and policy? Featuring contributions from scholars from across Canada and around the world, this collection offers insights into eighteen possible futures for the global IP system.

Collectively, these chapters re-envision international agreements; rethink Canadian IP law; argue for the creation of space for Indigenous legal traditions; highlight the promises and perils of technology as it relates to IP; expose inequities and injustices, and provide possible pathways to correct them.

This novel paints the portrait of a Lebanese family that has settled in Montreal. The central figure is Dounia, a 75-year-old mother and grandmother. Hers is a story of loss—she first leaves her own village to live in her husband’s hometown, and then is wrenched from her homeland, not once but twice, to live in a strange land whose language and customs are foreign to her.

Dounia can neither read nor write, and she speaks only Arabic. Illiterate yet perceptive, nourished by Lebanese proverbs and pearls of wisdom, she has a unique and captivating voice. She struggles, yes, but manages to achieve fulfilment in her new world: “My home is where my grandchildren are, clinging to my neck, calling me Sitto Dounia … in my language. I want to die where my children and my grandchildren live.”

Abla Farhoud was an actor and playwright before becoming a novelist in 1998 with the publication of this novel, the French title of which was Le bonheur a la queue glissante, awarded the France-Québec – Philippe Rossillon Prize. Other novels followed, including Le Sourire de la petite Juive (published in English as Hutchison Street), Le dernier des Snoreux, and the posthumous book Havre-Saint-Pierre. Abla Farhoud passed away in 2021.

Artificial Intelligence’s Impact on Legal Journals provides an overview of the opportunities and challenges presented by the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on legal journals, including the Ottawa Law Review (OLR).

Throughout the publication lifecycle of a given piece, AI tools may play a pivotal role in enhancing the editorial and publishing processes. Similarly, authors submitting to legal journals may also leverage AI tools for purposes that range from improving readability to generating content.

While the potential benefits are significant, the use of such tools raises various issues pertaining to the accuracy and quality of publications, as well as broader ethical and legal issues.

Journals have responded to these opportunities and challenges at different speeds and in different ways. Some journals in non-legal disciplines have developed extensive AI policies, while the majority of legal journals appear to be falling behind in this regard.

This book contains several recommendations that will empower the OLR to embrace the transformative potential of AI responsibly while maintaining its commitment to safeguarding privacy, intellectual property, and scholarly rigour.

Central to this endeavour is the adoption of three AI policies: one covering the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in submissions, another addressing AI usage in the peer review process, and a final one relating to the editorial team.

This book ultimately aspires to ensure the OLR upholds its reputation as a reliable contributor to legal scholarship by guiding the organization through this new technological revolution.

In this volume are gathered articles published by Yolande Cohen and her team, offering for a first time a global perspective on Moroccan Jews post-colonial migrations to France and Canada. Having herself migrated from Morocco to Montreal, she is uniquely attuned to the difficulties of living through such a massive exile. Why did they leave Morocco? When did this migration happen? And how can we analyze their journey?

She explores the many vivid memories of departures that she encountered when collecting oral histories of migrants both in France and in Québec. She finds the deep attachment some of them have to their King and to Morocco, making it an exception in the Arab Muslim world. The main disruptive forces in the displacement of these populations were French colonialism and its emancipatory promises and Zionism, both messianic and modern.

After the establishment of the State of Israel and the subsequent Israel-Arab wars, most of them joined in the mass exodus of Jews from Arab lands, leaving their countries to go to Israel. With the ending of the French colonial empire and the decolonization process, a minority of westernized Jews went to France and to Canada, with the help of transnational Jewish organizations.

In Montréal, a city with a strong multi-ethnic Jewish Community, those migrants understood the crucial aspect of French language as an essential factor of integration. Yet, analyzing their trajectories and the words they used to represent their exile, allows us to understand the underlying traumas of their exiles.

For over forty years, William Head on Stage (WHoS) has operated as an inmate-run prison theatre, making it one of Canada’s longest-standing prison arts initiatives.

Staging Prison Theatre in Canada: Setting the Spotlight on William Head on Stage delves into the story of WHoS through the voices of the men involved, offering a unique criminological perspective that situates their experiences within the prison context.

The analysis explores how WHoS creates an alternative space within the social and emotional realities of incarceration. By unlocking participants’ capacities, skills, and confidence, the initiative fosters a sense of agency and community both inside the prison and beyond. WHoS becomes a space for transformation, offering men opportunities to re-imagine themselves and build meaningful connections.

This work underscores the broader significance of arts-based initiatives like WHoS, not only within prisons but also in the fields of criminology, theatre, and community engagement. It offers valuable insights for correctional administrators, criminologists, theatre practitioners, scholars, students, and anyone interested in the intersection of art and rehabilitation.

The Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP) is a prisoner-written, academically oriented and peer-reviewed non-profit journal based on the tradition of the penal press. JPP brings the knowledge produced by prison writers together with academic arguments to enlighten public discourse about the current state of carceral institutions. This is particularly important because, with few exceptions, definitions of deviance and constructions of those participating in these defined acts are incompletely created by social scientists, media representatives, politicians and individuals in the legal community.

These analyses most often promote self-serving interests, omit the voices of those most affected and facilitate repressive and reactionary penal policies and practices. As a result, the JPP attempts to acknowledge the accounts, experiences and criticisms of the criminalized by providing an educational forum where women and men can participate in the development of research that concerns them directly. In an age where “crime” has become lucrative and exploitable, the JPP exists as an important alternate source of information that competes with popularly held stereotypes and misconceptions about those who are currently, or who have in the past, faced the deprivation of liberty.

Canadian Nordicity is a pioneer work in more than one sense. It covers - the entire Canadian North: not only the Northwest Territories and the Yukon, but also seven provinces of Canada with northern territories. The North is at once the most extensive and least known region of Canada.

The author, who won both the Governor General's Award and the Prix Scientifique de la Province de Québec for this volume, introduces a novel concept: nordicity. Nordicity signifies the level of awareness and the degree of northern or polar consciousness in the minds of Canadians, as well as in the policies and actions at various levels of Canadian government.

Professor Hamelin has shown great skill in presenting the dynamic interplay of geography, ethnology, industry, settlement, and communications, as well as corporate and governmental policies as they influence contemporary life and development in the Canadian North. The treatment reflects skillful melding of fact and concept from the mind of an outstanding Canadian scientist.
Hamelin is concerned that many, probably most, Canadians know very little about their North. This is a time when major decisions are being made concerning the Canadian North that will affect the whole country, and this book provides excellent background against which to debate our course there.

Where Does a Giant Gorilla Sleep?:

The Demilitarized Society diagnoses the economic and allied decay caused by militarism, and formulates a set of proposals — political and economic — for demilitarizing our societies. It argues for building a coalition to challenge the power of the war-making institutions, composed of those occupations and interests which are deprived by the misapplication of resources to armaments. The deterioration of the infrastructure and productivity of society can only be reversed by the proper use of social capital. Adequate housing, health services, education, roads, public transportation, environmental cleanup, urban renovation, care of our children and the aged are all frustrated by the misuse of the capital fund to build weapons that are too terrible to be used and whose use would result in omnicide.

Industrialized nations - East and West - face this dilemma in common with much of the less developed world. Once the superpowers embark on the simultaneous course of disarmament and economic conversion, it will be in their interest and essentially within their power to ensure that the blocs they control and other nations within their spheres of influence do likewise.

The author provides a reliable "road map" to disarmament which would secure the jobs of those presently employed in military production and administration, and even the legal framework necessary for all nations to follow.

It's Greek to the Computer should help to settle some very old and central issues that have nagged Classical scholars for a long time. These issues concern the authenticity and the authorship of certain texts that have been attributed to Plato, to Aristotle, to both Plato and Aristotle, and to third parties. The fascinating question: was there a Homer? is also dealt with in a most original and provocative way.
In contrast to the older stylometrics which studied uncommon words, the new stresses the study of the most common words, for these lend themselves to statistical analysis. Professor Morton has presented a thorough introduction to the method of the new stylometrics in this volume.

The kind of investigation represented here can best be carried out by a "team" of computer specialists, statisticians, and Classicists. The team in this case is composed of A.Q. Morton of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Edinburgh, his colleague Professor Sidney Michaelson, Professor A.D. Winspear, the well-known Classicist from the University of Calgary who has recently been working at Oxford, and Dr. Michael Levison, formerly of Birkbeck College in the University of London, now Professor of Computing and Information Science at Queen's University, Kingston.

The "American Dream"—a utopian formula of the American ideals of wealth, happiness and individual freedom... The history of sixteen extant medical schools by a distinguished surgeon-historian glows with biographical sketches of their pioneers, "movers and shakers". Setting out to expose the elements necessary and common to all modern medical education, the author's zest for the unique, the colourful and spontaneous, has actually encouraged him to render the accounts of the several schools in novella-like form.
Each account reflects the rich, cross-grained Canadian variety of religion, language, culture and personality. In the end, shared overall experience and need — and generous federal support, especially after the second half of the twentieth century — created a remarkably interlinked and unified set of medical institutions.

Contributing to the flavour of this saga is the paradox that against long odds a nation still less than thirty million, inhabiting the largest land mass in the world, has produced a medical system and serving personnel second to none; while its record of research, discovery and precocious clinical application is no less remarkable in most fields of modern medicine. Over and above this achievement is the striking fact that a quarter of a century ago this country was able to extend quality publicly funded health care to all its people.

The author did not set out to write a brief history of medicine in Canada. It is for the reader to judge whether the recounting of two centuries of social and scientific history incident to the assembly and refinement of the medical schools — with their collegial linkages to Edinburgh, London, Paris and the USA — is the closest thing to it. Be that as it may, he has contrived to tell his story with measured grace, wit, candour and authority, while his summations in broad interpretive chapters, fore and aft, cast much additional critical light on the whole process

French Canadians are more historically minded than most other North Americans. The historians Gagnon has chosen to feature— Garneau, Ferland, Sulte, and Groulx—have a special significance because they were widely read by generations of their compatriots. They shaped the French Canadians' view of their own past and imprinted their own social and "national" identity.

Gagnon has given attention to the methodology of his historians, their access to sources, and their assessment of historical evidence. His major emphasis, however, is on their historical interpretation, on the values and ideology which explain their selection of events, the importance they give to personalities and to the events themselves. He has also made a sustained effort to put each author in his historical context, to show how the society in which they lived led them to stress certain values and to draw the lessons they did from the past. The analysis of the socio-historical context of each historian's writings, as well as those of their critics and out-riders, is comprehensive and informative. There is no other comparable study of French-Canadian historiography.

Parks for Profit is a lively contribution to a relatively neglected field of Canadian history. Beginning with the creation of Canada's first national park in Banff in 1885, the author provides a sympathetic story of the historical tension between conservation and profit which has marked Canada's national parks policy. She traces this motif from the era of Macdonald and Van Horne, through that of Mackenzie King to the initiatives of Trudeau and Chrétien, to the present day.

Canada's national parks have been consistently in jeopardy, whether from resource exploitation, commercialization, boundary erosion, federal-provincial jurisdictional conflict or budget cuts.
Yet, for more than a century, Canadian environmentalists, and certain politicians and civil servants, have continued to fight for, create, and maintain new parks—though frequently against great odds. Supported by meticulous documentation, this book chronicles the displacement by the automobile of the railroad from its dominance in the older parks, and it reveals the way the need for national highways influenced the financing and location of new parks. It also analyzes the conflicts between the railroad, mining, lumbering, hydro, and townsite interests, and those who worked to preserve the land in a more natural state. Native land claims too are proving to be an integral part of the contemporary park-making process.

The author's independent assessment of the striving for park creation over the last century, as well as her recommendations for the future, make Parks for Profit vital reading.

The readers of Gunnar Myrdal and His Works are getting two books in one. Part I deals with the biography of our subject and his contribution to social democracy, the "Swedish model," the famous (or notorious) "third way," to amelioration of the race problem in the USA, and to development in Southeast Asia, and the world over.
Part Il illuminates Myrdal the economic theorist, his transit to institutionalism, and his enduring concern for the methods of social science... but there is biography and charming anecdote in both.
Above all, Gunnar Myrdal's life and work represents a human and humane reaction to the austerity of unmitigated market forces in areas where they do not belong and are inherently ineffective. Born in 1898, his own experience in an impoverished Sweden and depressed America lent validity to his conclusion: "A social order that ... cannot afford to give children enough food, sanitary and spacious accommodation, satisfactory health care and education, and at the same time lacks employment for a great part of its labour force - that social order is unreasonable, and immoral and is already condemned by its own admission."
Myrdal was acutely aware that "the advanced democratic [welfare] state has its perils (the dulling of civic alertness, arising from the very success of State intervention, and inflation), but there is no help for that, as he saw it, but more democracy, more education, more participation and more equality as measures to overcome them" (Francine Lalonde).

Social Sciences and the Environment presents an interdisciplinary analysis of environmental issues. Thanks to the contributions from top specialists in the social sciences, whether in history, economics, geography, political science, demography or administrative sciences, this work offers a general survey of how each of these disciplines may contribute to the understanding of current environmental issues. In addition to reflections by specialists, the book includes perspectives of spokespersons from government, unions, management and native affairs. The Twentieth Century, a sequel to the author's Quebec and Its Historians: 1840 to 1920, is a survey of the main interpretive currents of a period of remarkable transformation in the study of French-Canadian history. Gagnon's principal themes are the emergence of professional or "scientific" history in postwar Quebec and the continuing struggles of nationalist and anti-nationalist scholars. At the same time, the author himself emerges as an impassioned partisan in the debates he chronicles and much of this work consists of a critique of the positions of Fernand Ouellet, a leading protagonist in recent historical controversies.

In earlier chapters, Michel Brunet, Jean Hamelin, Guy Frégault, Marcel Trudel and Louise Dechêne, among others, are placed in the context of their times and their reactions to previous scholarship is examined.

There are very few works on Canadian historiography and, the essays of Ramsay Cook aside, the most widely-read book on the subject, Carl Berger's The Writing of Canadian History, deals only with English-Canadian historians. This volume will, therefore, be of particular interest to English speaking historians, students, and general readers. The latter might also be interested in learning about the connections between historical debate and the political conflicts that rocked Quebec in recent decades.

Organized sport as we know it is not an expression of social consensus or of continuing progress towards a better world, nor is it a homogeneous, cohesive entity. This book invites us to consider the hidden face of Canadian sport. Has there been equal opportunity for the various social classes and ethnic groups, and between men and women? What role has television, the writer of sports fiction, or the established church in Quebec had in deciding what games can be played and who can play them? In this volume are gathered articles published by Yolande Cohen and her team, offering for a first time a global perspective on Moroccan Jews post-colonial migrations to France and Canada. Having herself migrated from Morocco to Montreal, she is uniquely attuned to the difficulties of living through such a massive exile. Why did they leave Morocco? When did this migration happen? And how can we analyze their journey?

She explores the many vivid memories of departures that she encountered when collecting oral histories of migrants both in France and in Québec. She finds the deep attachment some of them have to their King and to Morocco, making it an exception in the Arab Muslim world. The main disruptive forces in the displacement of these populations were French colonialism and its emancipatory promises and Zionism, both messianic and modern.

After the establishment of the State of Israel and the subsequent Israel-Arab wars, most of them joined in the mass exodus of Jews from Arab lands, leaving their countries to go to Israel. With the ending of the French colonial empire and the decolonization process, a minority of westernized Jews went to France and to Canada, with the help of transnational Jewish organizations.

In Montréal, a city with a strong multi-ethnic Jewish Community, those migrants understood the crucial aspect of French language as an essential factor of integration. Yet, analyzing their trajectories and the words they used to represent their exile, allows us to understand the underlying traumas of their exiles.

In February 1997, the Ontario government announced the closure of Hôpital Montfort, the province's only French-language teaching hospital. The shockwave was immediate, giving rise to SOS Montfort, an organization dedicated to saving an institution deemed essential to the survival of French Ontario. Contemporary Acadia is often construed from the point of view of rupture and summed up by the binary division of tradition and modernity. This Manichean and static interpretation ultimately sets the supposedly regressive Catholicism of the first half of the twentieth century against the progressive liberalism of the 1960s. But is social change not a lengthy process? Is it far-fetched to assume that religion, omnipresent at the beginning of the twentieth century, was not monolithic and that the ideological foundations of Acadian mobilization were able to blossom within? Building on meticulous and detailed studies of student and Catholic Action movements in Acadia, which are ironically not well known, and taking into account their importance, Philippe Volpé invites the reader to ponder these very questions.

From the Association catholique de la jeunesse acadienne, to student unions of the 1960s, to the Jeunesse étudiante catholique, the author presents the players and movements that contributed to the development of the small Acadian society for half a century. Between youth and adult life, Catholic Action and National Action, the social and the political, universalism and nationalism, the college campus and civil society, Acadia and French Canada, this work transports us to the edge of these worlds, to tensions and debates on history, ideas, and programs. In short, it introduces the primordial intentions that have motivated the societal stakeholders in Acadia during the first half of the twentieth century. The result is an original account, which proposes an astonishing rereading of the parameters that help us understand contemporary Acadia.

VOLUME 33, Number 2 (2024) is a special issue of the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons on “Homelessness and Incarceration” edited by Erin Dej (Wilfrid Laurier University) and Dale Spencer (Carleton University). In addition to articles on the intersection between homelessness and imprisonment, this edition of the journal includes another installment of the dialogue on the Canadian carceral state featuring two articles written by Indigenous writers. The Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) inspired an outpouring of responses among Canadian cultural producers. Yet, the war and its influence on Canada literature have received little attention in histories of Canadian cultural production. This anthology attempts to remedy this gap and inspire future research into Canadian Spanish Civil War literature. The anthology brings together a selection of diverse literary materials—fiction, poetry, drama, reportage, journalism, pamphlets, memoirs, and other life writing—representing just a fraction of the Canadian cultural production inspired by the Spanish conflict. Many of these texts have never been published before, having been largely dispersed in archives across the world.

This selected anthology joins Ted Allan’s This Time a Better Earth, Hugh Garner’s Best Stories, and Charles Yale Harrison’s Meet Me on the Barricades in the Spanish Civil War subseries of the University of Ottawa Press’s Canadian Literature Collection. Together, these edited texts are now re-circulating under a common banner to establish what we consider to be the first stage in the recovery of anglophone Canadian literature about the Spanish Civil War. To further situate the literary texts included here, we include a scholarly introduction, and a full apparatus of author biographies, textual notes, and explanatory notes. The introduction provides an historical-cultural overview of the 1930s to contextualize Canadian involvement in the Spanish Civil War and the cultural production the war generated. Aristotle, Oedipus, and Greek Religion explores an important religious side to ancient Aristotelianism that has an impact on contemporary philosophical debates.

Louis F. Groarke shows how an exegetical perspective open to and respectful of Greek Pagan religion allows readers to discover a remarkably different Aristotle than the one to which we have grown accustomed.

To begin with, one must discover what Aristotle (and his school) taught, not by examining isolated passages, but by getting a sense of his philosophy as a whole. One has to make sense of the circumstantial evidence and carefully piece together a coherent technical case for the overall argument.

In each chapter, Groarke considers another aspect of Aristotelian thought; this is in opposition to mainstream opinion which often describes Aristotle as a secret atheist, an agnostic, or as something akin to a modern-day positivist or a reductionist.

The author goes on to show that Aristotle valued religious practice on a personal and social level, that his metaphysics are marked by intimations of the divine, that he provides an epistemological space for both science and religion, that his account of Greek tragedy has an inalienable moral and religious side, and that his account of the origins of cognition is not so far removed from religious scripture.

Resulting from a collaborative approach, Doing Democracy in "Third Places" presents the results of multi-site ethnographic research in seven Quebec civil society organizations. It reports on observations, analyses and comparisons of a diversity of innovative citizenship education practices aimed at young people in these “third places”, i.e. socialization spaces different from school and family.

Focusing on the presentation of case studies, the book reveals the diversity of formative experiences offered to young Quebecers. The pooling of case analyses leads to a fruitful reflection on education for democratic citizenship through a plurality of citizen experimentation practices rooted in the defense of children’s rights, feminist social action, the community movement, alterglobalism and municipal and school public action.

With its original conceptual vocabulary and qualitative methodological approach, this book will help to push back the geolinguistic and disciplinary boundaries that often separate research currents closely or remotely related to the social and political engagement and participation of young people. Written in an accessible style, it is aimed at a wide audience, including youth organization staff, graduate students, the youth policy sector and anyone interested in the issues surrounding youth citizenship in the 21st century.

She faced prejudice and stereotypes, which she ultimately overcame. She reconciled family and work life, pursuing a challenging and rewarding international career in a very specialized field at a time when this was still very uncommon for a woman. And she relives the tragic Polytechnique massacre.

L’une d’elles a traduit la Bible en entier. Une autre est l’auteur d’un manuel de traduction qui a fait date. Grâce à la traduction, ces femmes instruites, indépendantes et déterminées ont pu s’affirmer sur le plan social, pénétrer dans le monde des idées et prendre la parole à des époques où cela leur était refusé. Ce faisant, elles ont contribué à modifier le regard déformant que les hommes portaient sur les capacités intellectuelles des femmes. Au cours de l’histoire, les traductrices ont assumé les mêmes rôles que les traducteurs masculins. Seul celui de « soutien au conjoint » leur serait propre. La connaissance du sujet traduisant est indispensable à l’interprétation et à la compréhension d’une œuvre traduite. Aussi, les auteurs de ces portraits bien documentés ont-ils complété l’analyse des traductions par l’examen des circonstances qui les ont vus naître. Sans faire de concession à la rigueur scientifique, sans verse non plus dans l’éloquence emphatique ou le lyrisme exalté, ils ont su peindre tout en nuances et dans une langue vivante, des traductrices indissociables de leur œuvre. Des femmes qui, à certains égards, sont exceptionnelles. Assez en tout cas pour mériter d’être mieux connues. Assez pour figurer en bonne place dans les annales de l’histoire de la traduction.

Les rapports qu’entretiennent ces deux aspects de son œuvre révèlent une facette jusqu’ici insoupçonnée de la personnalité de la romancière, aux prises avec un complexe d’Œdipe jamais entièrement résorbé. Ainsi s’explique que toute sa vie Germaine Guèvremont ait été tentée par l’autobiographie, toute son œuvre, y compris Le Survenant et Marie-Didace, s’apparentant à une thérapie.

Bien des projets de développement international visent actuellement les femmes. Mais la multitude de ces petits projets soi-disant générateurs de revenues les aident-elles vraiment ? Pour évaluer la pertinence et l’impact de ces politiques, Marie France Labrecque prend en exemple une région andine de la Colombie, La Cocha. À l’aide d’une méthodologie d’anthropologie socioculturelle, elle démontre que les changements sociaux les plus importants ne s’effectuent pas seulement dans les rapports entre hommes et femmes mais aussi entre les générations. L’auteure procède à une analyse minutieuse de la division du travail dans les activités principales auxquelles se livrent les hommes, les femmes, les adultes et les enfants. Elle présente aussi les trajectoires individuelles de femmes appartenant à différentes générations et décrit leur niveau d’insertion dans le travail et dans le développement. Enfin, elle se penche sur les organisations communautaires, leur implication dans la région pour tenter d’évaluer leur influence sur le changement des structures sociales, de la vie quotidienne tant pour les individus que pour la collectivité.

Cet ouvrage jette un nouvel éclairage sur une période particulièrement fertile de l’histoire de la traduction, qui s’étend sur les XIIe siècles en Espagne. C’est au cours de cette période que le savoir scientifique et philosophique des Grecs, revu et corrigé par les Arabes, est transmis aux Occidentaux. Clara Foz remet en question l’idée communément admise que l’École de Tolède formerait une entreprise unique. Son analyse révèle plutôt l’existence de deux mouvements de traduction, l’un commandité par l’Église, au XIIᵉ siècle, l’autre par le roi Alphonse X, le Sage, au XIIIe siècle. L’auteur fait d’abord état de pratiques qui avaient cours à l’époque pour la traduction, puis elle fait ressortir les enjeux politiques et culturels sous-jacents. Que traduit-on ? Pourquoi traduit-on ? Quels sont les modes de collaboration entre traducteurs ? Quels sont les rapports qui unissent les traducteurs à leurs commanditaires ?

Francophonies d’Amérique propose dans ce numéro, intitulé Les mots du marché: l’inscription de la francophonie canadienne dans la nouvelle économie, un ensemble de textes résultant de travaux de recherche menés en équipe sur les nouveaux défis auxquels les communautés francophones doivent faire face. Le poids démographique de la francophonie canadienne est en continuel déclin, mais ce fait ne constitue certes qu’un aspect de la réalité. Il reste cependant que les impératifs du développement économique, dont l’urbanisation et la culture technico-scientifique, favorisent l’unilinguisme au profit de la langue dominante, l’anglais. Or, la langue est le plus puissant facteur d’appartenance identitaire et sociale, et une langue dominée devient source de conflit dans une situation de cohabitation linguistique inégale. Ce numéro, qui réunit des chercheurs acadiens, québécois, ontariens, manitobain, albertain et français, a été dirigé par Monica Heller et Mireille McLaughlin de l’Université de Toronto, Patricia Lamarre de l’Université de Montréal et Mélanie LeBlanc de l’Université de Moncton.

La violence et la peur font tellement partie de nos vies que, parfois, elles se confondent avec elles. Elles s’insinuent aussi bien dans le social que dans l’individuel et déterminent l’histoire de l’un et de l’autre. Le crime, quant à lui, semble d’être devenu un acte privilégié non seulement pour dire la violence, mais aussi pour vivre la peur. Le criminel, à cet égard, a parfois pour fonction de permettre de défini son contraire, l’individu de bonne réputation. L’époque actuelle favorise un individualisme d’un genre nouveau : la personne menacée de toutes parts tente de se protéger en démonisant un groupe particulier. Heureusement, le monde d’aujourd’hui produit aussi des individus qui, du fait de l’affaissement des valeurs anciennes, se montrent plus tolérants à l’égard des autres.

Cette acceptation d’autrui fait obstacles à certaines formes de violence et favorise la non-violence. Le présent ouvrage nous conduit à examiner quels sens revêtent la violence, la peur et le crime et quels sont leurs rapports mutuels. Il s’adresse à tous ceux qui s’intéressent à la justice pénale et sociale. Il fait ressortir certains problèmes et indique certains moyens permettant de résoudre les conflits, y compris ceux vécus par l’exclu. Il touche les pratiques sociales et les personnes appelées à les gérer, à assurer la sécurité et à éliminer la peur. Il est d’un grand intérêt pour les criminologues, travailleurs sociaux, psychologues, éducateurs, sociologues et politicologues.

Cet ouvrage propose une incursion dans le monde de la cour pontificale et des cours cardinalices au XVIe siècle. En quoi consistait ce monde, qui en faisait partie, comment y entrait-on, quels avantages pouvait-on espérer en tirer et pourquoi était-on à ce point attiré par lui? Autant de questions auxquelles l'ouvrage cherche à répondre à partir de nombreux documents d'époque, documents souvent peu connus ou peu exploités : des rôles de cour, des livres de comptes, des registres de salaires, des cérémonials, des correspondances inédites et des traités qui leur sont contemporains. Ces multiples regards sur un monde encore mal connu, sur les personnages, grands et petits, qui en font partie, y trouvant pour la plupart profit et intérêt pour eux-mêmes et leur famille, permettent de comprendre pourquoi la cour pontificale faisait l'admiration, puis surtout l'envie de tant de contemporains qui étaient prêts à tout pour y accéder.

Littéraire, non littéraire tackles the convergence and divergence, the differences and confluences between the literary and non-literary as they apply to translation and translatology. This epistemological thinking is fuelled not only by the input of translatologists but also by researchers from other fields and related fields that feed the discipline, namely law, lexicology, literary theory (narratology and literary history), and philosophy.

The challenge of this collaborative work is twofold: on the one hand, it aims to concretely illustrate how translatology can function and evolve as an interdisciplinary or even poly-disciplinary field. This is achieved by the simple fact of bringing together complementary essays in a single book. Taken together or separately, they can inspire new ways of thinking for translatologists, regardless of their preferred field or orientations, and shed new light on the underlying concepts and themes of translatology. On the other hand, it aims to bring to light the urgent need to rethink translatology from a multidisciplinary perspective and based on a holistic vision inspired by the (re)conciliation of traditional and often reductionist dichotomies, the leading one opposing the literary with the pragmatic.

With a preface by Christiane Nord, a translatologist who embodies the heritage of German functionalist translatology, this collaborative work brings together translatologists and other scholars to discuss the discipline and the broader issues it embraces, which are often underestimated or not well known outside the field.

Nouveau en éducation, le concept des littératies multiples reflète notre ère de la mondialisation, où lire et écrire ne sont plus confinés à l'imprimé. Ce recueil remet en question la culture de l'écrit et aborde les diverses dimensions des littératies multiples par rapport aux mathématiques, à la musique, aux sciences et à la santé, et ce, pour les enfants, les adolescents et les adultes en milieu minoritaire. C’est dans un numéro du printemps que sont publiés les textes abordant le thème du colloque « Langues officielles et dualité linguistique : structuration de la recherche et partenariats ». Organisé par le Réseau de la recherche sur la francophonie canadienne, ce colloque a eu lieu au printemps 2006 à l’Université McGill, dans le cadre du congrès de l’Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS). Ce thème est certes d’actualité puisqu’il coïncide avec le dévoilement du deuxième Plan d’action pour les langues officielles du gouvernement fédéral. Ce numéro offre une sélection de six textes présentés dans le cadre de ce colloque. Tous les articles évoquent d’une manière ou d’une autre des réalités liées aux langues officielles, aux responsabilités et aux rôles des gouvernements ainsi qu’à l’importance d’une recherche universitaire engagée.

The presence of Jews in Quebec dates back four centuries. Quebec Jewry, in Montreal in particular, has evolved over time, thanks to successive waves of migration from different regions of the world. The Jews of Quebec belong to a unique society in North America, which they have worked to fashion. The dedication with which they have defended their rights and their extensive achievements in multiple sectors of activity have helped foster diversity in Quebec.

This work recounts the different contributions Jews have made over the years, along with the cultural context that encouraged the emergence in Montreal of a Jewish community like no other in North America.

This is the first overview of a history that began during the French Regime and continued, through many twists and turns, up to the turn of the twenty-first century.

Dealing with the most topical questions of the time, Sofia Tolstaya’s artistic works—from parables to short stories, novellas, and memoirs—show deep insights into the social context of nineteenth-century Russia.

In his lengthy review of My Life (along with other Tolstaya publications) in Canadian Slavonic Papers, the eminent Tolstoy scholar Hugh McLean (2011) laments the fact that it has taken so long (almost a century after her death) to focus academic attention on Sofia Tolstaya, and that there has been no unified publication of her works, scattered as they are among dated journals or not published at all.

This book aims to help fill this lacuna by offering a critical introduction to her literary output as a writer in her own right, and presenting, for the first time, an anthology of her main artistic works, some in fresh English translation, and others never translated before.

Ce numéro 28 de Francophonies d’Amérique est le fruit d’une riche collaboration avec l’Institut canadien de recherche sur les minorités linguistiques (ICRML) et son directeur, Rodrigue Landry. Un tel collectif sur la santé, résultat du travail de l’ICRML, est une véritable mise en chantier de la recherche dans un domaine de pointe où, en ce qui concerne les francophonies minoritaires au Canada, tout ne fait que commencer. Nous espérons que les recommandations qui y sont faites donneront lieu, bien au-delà de ces pages, à des politiques publiques concrètes et durables. Un tel collectif sur la santé, résultat du travail de l’ICRML, est une véritable mise en chantier de la recherche dans un domaine de pointe où, en ce qui concerne les francophonies minoritaires au Canada, tout ne fait que commencer.

Francophonies d’Amérique est une revue pluridisciplinaire destinée à servir de forum aux universitaires francophones qui œuvrent en milieu minoritaire. Elle crée un réseau d’information et d’échanges culturels entre les communautés francophones hors Québec dont l’isolement est à la mesure du continent nord-américain. L’Ontario, l’Acadie, l’Ouest canadien et les États-Unis y sont représentés. Les diverses facettes de la vie française dans ces régions font l’objet d’analyses et d’études à la fois savantes et accessibles à un public qui s’intéresse aux « parlants français » en Amérique du Nord. On y retrouve aussi la liste des publications récentes en langue française issues de ces collectivités ou portant sur les « minorités ».

Francophonies d’Amérique constitue à la fois un outil de travail indispensable à toute personne qui fait des recherches sur les francophones vivant en situation minoritaire et une source de renseignements des plus utiles pour quiconque s’intéresse à la francophonie nord-américaine hors Québec.

La notion d’espace rural est une notion floue. L’espace rural n’est plus seulement un espace agricole, ni un monde replié sur lui-même; l’espace rural est maintenant ouvert sur le monde. Les valeurs traditionnelles de la ruralité ont profondément évolué; les comportements ruraux se transforment et s’ajustent à l’urbanisation ambiante, fortement médiatisée. Les modernités de la ruralité créent une dynamique spatiale qui s’inscrit dans la complémentarité ville-campagne. Du point de vue des communautés rurales, leurs aspirations sont elles aussi ouvertes sur le monde, sur le potentiel d’un monde en mouvement, tout en misant sur le développement local, l’investissement de ressources économiques, l’innovation technologique et la valorisation des ressources humaines. Les contours de la ruralité changent. Or, l’espace rural francophone où vivent des minorités fait face effectivement à plusieurs changements simultanés, voire des défis qui peuvent paraître colossaux : déclin démographique, exode des jeunes, vieillissement de la population, exploitation des ressources naturelles en perte de vitesse, activités économiques au ralenti.

À l’instar de la population canadienne et mondiale, les francophones s’urbanisent de plus en plus; les régions rurales où souvent les francophones se retrouvent entre eux, majoritaires dans leur village ou leur petite ville, ne jouent plus le même rôle traditionnel en tant que territoire protecteur de la survie linguistique pour l’ensemble de la collectivité francophone. Qu’advient-il alors de l’espace rural francophone? Les textes retenus pour ce numéro thématique proposent divers angles d’étude. Il semble en effet pertinent que des solutions soient envisagées, telles que le nouveau projet de communautés rurales au Nouveau-Brunswick et la promotion de l’entrepreneuriat chez les jeunes diplômés universitaires. D’autres études s’intéressent à des réalités différentes, dont les relations entre les écoles françaises hors Québec et leur communauté, l’usage d’Internet par les élèves francophones du nord-est de l’Ontario ou encore la vitalité de la langue française tant dans la Basse-Côte-Nord qu’au Nunavik et en Nouvelle-Angleterre.

Il peut paraître étonnant d’évoquer la notion de liberté en matière d’apprentissage. Celle-ci ne fait-elle pas partie intégrante de nos systèmes de valeurs ? Si la fin du XIXe siècle a été témoin de la lutte des femmes pour l’accès à l’éducation, le XXIe siècle s’annonce comme celui où les notions de pluralité, de diversité et d’accroissement continu occuperont la première place. Liberté d’apprendre, certes, mais de quelle manière ? La recherche sur les femmes en milieu universitaire montre que leur expérience est parfois aliénante. Dans cet ouvrage, Jeannine M. Ouellette révèle que le malaise vient de ce que l’apprentissage est détaché de la vie d’apprenante. Ainsi, le « autrement » se rapporte à l’intégration de l’expérience des femmes dans le projet d’apprentissage.

La « liberté » devrait être celle de rechercher dans le milieu d’apprentissage les moyens de mettre au jour les connaissances qui proviennent de l’expérience des femmes. Les personnes en situation de formation feraient leur profit d’une démarche qui reconnaîtrait leur contribution personnelle. Pour bien des femmes, il est particulièrement utile de mettre leur expérience en rapport avec les connaissances transmises, car les réalités qu’elles vivent sont parfois occultées par un système axé sur des préoccupations essentiellement masculines. Tenant compte du développement du moi, de la parole et de la pensée des femmes, l’auteure plaide en faveur d’une méthodologie de l’enseignement qui peut rendre l’expérience universitaire plus satisfaisante pour les femmes, d’une part, et soutenir leur démarche de croissance personnelle, d’autre part.
