Turfgrass management has greatly changed over time. Wireworms are the immature stage of click beetle (Coleoptera: Elateridae) species. Several species of wireworms are considered serious pests of agricultural crops, including small grains. Limited information with respect to objective species- and crop-specific economic injury levels, effective insecticides, and integrated pest management protocols have resulted in devastating yield losses in severely infested small grain fields. This chapter provides a review of what is known about wireworm ecology and management, focusing on the most recent advances in species identification, within-species population variation, and species-specific research on their management with respect to pest monitoring, prevention, cultural, biological, and chemical control methods. Soil metaproteomic, the protein profile of a sample, gives both taxonomical and functional information and has the potential to improve knowledge of mechanisms underlying the important ecosystem services by soil. This chapter aims to discuss the challenges facing protein extraction from soil, their purification, determination and assignment to available databases. The authors begin by outlining the top-down and bottom-up methods in soil metaproteomics, and their benefits and shortcomings. They then review soil protein extraction techniques, and demonstrate that protein profiles depend on the extraction method used but the number of extracted proteins is much lower than those expressed by the active soil microbiome. The authors then discuss the challenge that the large number of expressed proteins and varieties of proteins in the soil matric pose to soil metaproteomics. Finally, they explore the metaproteomics of specific microorganisms inoculated into a model soil.

Ready-to-eat (RTE) poultry meat products can be contaminated with pathogens and spoilage microorganisms after the cooking step, contributing to food spoilage losses and increasing the risk to consumers. Antimicrobials applied to RTE meats tend to be broad-spectrum in their activities with differing effects on individual microorganisms. A broader understanding of the microbial ecology of RTE poultry meat products is needed to fully assess measures to extend shelf life such as antimicrobials. Developments in next generation sequencing have emerged as a viable means to assess overall microbial ecology responses in food products. This chapter discusses how these approaches can be used to better understand and manage spoilage processes.
