This chapter covers advances in production of crickets as food and animal feed. Cricket farming is a rapidly growing agribusiness, coupled to the rising demand for alternative proteins for food and feed. This review highlights the status and emerging gaps in cricket farming, processing, nutritional composition, safety and application. The cricket farming industry is highly profitable and the prices for farmed insect products remain high, though becoming more competitive, as the industry matures. Advanced continental or global regulatory framework is urgently needed. Evidence suggests that although the industry is still in its infancy, this eco-friendly cricket-based technology is already benefitting people of all age groups across the world.

The common housefly (Musca domestica), a ubiquitous presence in various environments, has been a subject of scientific investigation for over a century. This chapter explores the potential use of housefly larvae as a sustainable animal feed ingredient. Their ease of rearing, rapid growth, high nutritional value, and environmental benefits in nutrient recycling have revived interest in using them as an alternative protein source for food and feed. Despite these advantages, housefly larvae have not achieved significant commercial viability. The chapter examines key challenges and ways of achieving successful commercial production.

Ephemeral gully and rill erosion have significant effects on agricultural land around the world. The characterization and quantification of these phenomena require us to determine their geometry and evolution, through either 3D or 2D approaches. 3D techniques are able to cover large areas at the expense of accuracy in their measurements, while 2D techniques are more accurate but can only be utilized on small areas at plot scale. This chapter highlights the current state of the art of ephemeral gully/rill measurement techniques based on the characterization of channel cross-sections. Gully/rill erosion is characterized and channel volume measuring techniques are described. Factors contributing to measurement error are explored, including (i) resolution of cross-section elevation profiles, (ii) channel size and shape, and (iii) number of cross-sections used per unit channel length. The case study indicates that the authors’ approach accurately determines the cross-section geometry of small erosion channels.

Numerous studies referred to in this book and in other publications have examined the relationship between a proximal sensor, or remote sensing with crop yield and other attributes of interest to precision agriculture. Combining data from two or more sensors tends to increase the relationship between sensor readings and crop attributes. Crop canopy height, active-optical sensor readings, remote sensing data, and weather data have been combined to increase predictability of crop attributes. The fusion of these data requires the use of appropriate statistical tools. Description of several of these tools is provided in this chapter.

Managing the microbiological safety of fresh produce is a complicated task. Quantitative microbial risk assessments are being used increasingly as an aid to risk management by federal agencies, food industry professionals and academic researchers. This chapter takes a microorganism and historical perspective to review advances in quantitative microbial risk assessment of fresh produce. The chapter reviews microbial risk assessment research over the past 25 years specifically focused on Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, Escherichia coli O157:H7 and norovirus as important pathogens that have all caused outbreaks linked to fresh produce.

In recent years poultry meat and egg consumption has seen an exponential increase worldwide. There is therefore a strong demand for ensuring the microbiological safety of poultry products. The main pathogenic bacteria in poultry meat and eggs are Staphylococcus aureus, Campylobacter spp., Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. These pathogens are able to adapt to and survive in poultry processing environments. Acceptable bacterial concentrations in poultry products are defined by health agencies. Sampling and detection methods are then developed for microbiological control. PCR, RT-PCR and immunoassays have now replaced culturing methods. Research has focused on the development of high-throughput and low-cost methods through analytical microdevices based on biosensors with short response times for on-site use and with low detection limits. This chapter describes newly-developed optical and electrochemical biosensors for rapid detection of foodborne pathogens in poultry.

Advances in crop health monitoring would help farmers use resources more efficiently and accurately. Higher-quality spatiotemporal information on changes in crop characteristics will enable more precise and timely management of crop health, by providing early indication of crop disease outbreaks and enabling site-specific disease management. This chapter explores how current advances in remote sensing can contribute to improve the monitoring of plant health in response to stresses such as disease. A case study demonstrates how very high-resolution remote sensing data from drones, combined with deep learning models, can be used to evaluate stripe rust in the field. The chapter discusses current limitations of remote sensing to provide accurate and specific data on plant health and disease and how these might be addressed.

This chapter examines advances in remote and aerial sensing of crop water status. The chapter first discusses the quantification of plant water status and the various methods used to assess plant water stress. It then moves on to examine the use of electromagnetic radiation and how it can interact with matter. A section on optical remote sensing of plant water status is also provided, followed by sections on thermal infrared remote sensing and microwave remote sensing of plant water status. The chapter also offers potential areas for future research development and other sources for further information.

Remote sensing is a cost-effective method to monitor soil health. Compared with conventional monitoring station networks, it has improved spatial representativeness and no interference with farming activities. For the last few decades, microwave remote sensing has been tested on satellites for global soil moisture monitoring. A number of experimental and theoretical studies were conducted to further develop both active and passive microwave soil moisture remote sensing techniques at regional and farm scales. The recent development shows the potential of regular soil moisture remote sensing with a high resolution and high accuracy. In the future, P-band soil moisture remote sensing, deep learning, UAV techniques are expected to have a high sensitivity and high-resolution soil moisture at the farm scale.

This edited volume explores various issues pertaining to the education of children with disabilities in Africa, the Caribbean and Middle East. As a group, persons with disabilities have been subjected to social, cultural and educational exclusions of various forms and for various socially-scripted reasons. In education, for instance, individuals with disabilities have been altogether excluded from educational participation in many parts of the developing world or they have been excluded from pursuing meaningfully beneficial higher levels of education in developed countries like the United States. One of the social responses/remedies to the widely-acknowledged exclusionary practices experienced by learners with disabilities has been the widespread implementation of inclusive practices in the education of individuals with disabilities across countries, in the west and the developing regions of the world. A distinctive marker of difference in the way inclusive practices have been enacted in western countries versus those in the developing world has primarily stemmed from the fact that majority of western countries operate under funded mandates that also regulate the provision of education to persons with disabilities. While the ideal of inclusion has been highly desirable, many of countries in the developing world have floundered in their implementation due to lack sound legislative framework to guide implementation coupled with socio-cultural factors related to negative perceptions of disabilities and limited funding sources. Chapters in this volume explore inclusive education from a variety of perspectives.

Fresh produce accounts for the majority of foodborne illness outbreaks and >30% of food waste attributed to premature spoilage. To date, pathogen control has been focused on the pre-harvest stage, in the form of testing and Good Agricultural Practice, given the limited efficacy of post-harvest washing to remove field-acquired contamination. However, the open nature of production systems and unreliability of testing have led to increased attention on post-harvest interventions as a type of ‘pasteurisation’ step. Attempts to improve the washing process involve identifying and maintaining sufficient free chlorine in wash tanks to prevent cross-contamination events. Alternative sanitisers to chlorine have also been evaluated although at best, minimize cross-contamination rather than support decontamination. This has led to the development of aqueous-free produce decontamination methods with gas-phase, gas plasma and hydroxyl-radical treatments showing promise. The development of a standard validation method to compare technologies is discussed along with future directions.

In this chapter, we review a potential group of soft grippers used for handling and harvesting crops and their suitability for agriculture, including challenges such as safety in handling and adaptability to different crops. The review aims to show why and to what extent soft grippers have been successful in handling agricultural tasks. Over the last decade, interest in rearing black soldier fly (BSF, Hermetia illucens (L.), Diptera: Stratiomyidae) has grown exponentially. BSF larvae (BSFL) can be reared on any waste substrate, but the type of substrate markedly impacts the overall efficiency of the process as well as the composition of the larval biomass. It also influences the overall environmental impact of the generated larval protein. In this chapter, we look at available waste streams for BSFL rearing in the European Union and globally. We describe the different process parameters, in addition to substrate properties that influence process efficiency, and how different substrates affect the process, the composition of the larval biomass as well as the environmental impact. Later in the chapter, the implications and challenges faced by the insect industry are discussed, along with ways in which these challenges can be met.

African swine fever (ASF) is one of the most important viral diseases of domestic and wild suids. Over the last 15 years, ASF has gone truly pandemic and with that, fast, reliable, but also pragmatic diagnostic approaches are needed for early detection and surveillance. In the following chapter, three main points will be discussed that go beyond the well-established routine diagnostic techniques that are quite well-developed and described for ASF: a) the use of alternative sample matrices for ASF diagnosis in domestic and wild pigs, b) recent developments in pen-side diagnostics in a broader sense, and c) possibilities and recent advances for genomic epidemiology (especially in areas with occurrence of local variants).

Global demand for milk and other dairy products continues to grow. As a result of this increased consumer demand, the sector’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have risen dramatically. It is therefore crucial that the livestock sector reacts to these developments and considers areas for improvement that could reduce the sector’s contribution to climate change.

Advances in sustainable dairy cattle nutrition provides a comprehensive review of the wealth of research on recent advances in understanding and improving dairy cattle nutrition to reduce the carbon footprint of the dairy sector. Synthetic biology is an evolving area that can advance poultry science and production in achieving a more sustainable future. This chapter outlines multidisciplinary studies of synthetic biology to solve pressing problems within the poultry industry. It introduces state of art tools in synthetic biology and highlights recent advances and examples of practical implementation. The chapter reviews syntheses of proteins including enzymes by bacterial, fungal, and plant systems.
