In ihrer gut dokumentierten Arbeit befasst sich Irmtraud Ubbens mit Leben und Werk des Journalisten und Schriftstellers Moritz Goldstein, der aus dem nationalsozialistischen Deutschland über Italien und England in die Vereinigten Staaten emigrierte. Anhand einer differenzierten Quellenlage beschreibt sie vor dem Hintergrund der Korrespondenz Goldsteins sehr eindringlich die Zerrissenheit des emigrierten Schriftstellers, die durch den allmählichen Verlust der Muttersprache, seinem wichtigsten Arbeitsinstrument, ausgelöst wurde. Im Anhang des Buches werden Texte präsentiert, die Goldstein nach 1933 verfasst hat.
