Brown and Holley are interested in place and what makes people who they are. With particular interest in how people take the hand they’ve been dealt—fate, family, circumstance, luck—and craft a life for themselves, the authors celebrate the grit and gumption of these Texas originals. Introducing quirky characters and tenacious spirits, Holley’s stories seek out the personality of the small town while Brown’s photographs capture the essence of a changing landscape. Hometown Texas aims not to be nostalgic or sentimental but rather to show readers an unknown Texas—one that, while not vanishing, is certainly on the wane.

Organized into five topographical, geographic, and cultural sections—East, West, North, South, and Central—three dozen stories and more than eighty complementary images work to create a parallel narrative to reveal what Brown has described as the “collective, various, remarkably complex soul that makes Texas unique.”

Hometown Texas is an exploration across miles and cultures, of well-traveled roads and forgotten byways, deep into the heart of Texas.

Ranging in scale from tree bark to the vast emptiness of the desert Southwest, John Ward’s elegant photographs integrate landscape and ruin, transcendence and decay, and speak to the powerful forces of nature and culture at work in the West. This beautifully produced duotone volume of pristine vistas contrasting with crumbling edifices showcases a photographer at the peak of his form and lays bare Ward's deep concern for this rugged but fragile environment.

Along with the movement Humans of New York, a project to share the stories of New Yorkers, Humans of San Antonio is part of the Global Humans Project, a network of major cities around the world dedicated to capturing a glimpse into the lives of everyday citizens. From Amsterdam to Rio de Janeiro, San Antonio joins the ranks of cities photographed and shown through social media to the rest of the world.

Michael Cirlos is the photojournalist behind Humans of San Antonio, a social media project founded in 2012 that combines photography and storytelling to promote the spirit of San Antonio's growing downtown community. The book Humans of San Antonio is the culmination of more than four years of photographs highlighting the people, culture, and vibrancy of San Antonio. As a community that has weathered economic imbalance and proven itself a leader in urban redevelopment and twenty-first-century innovation, San Antonio embraces change while continuing to celebrate the diversity, history, and individuality that makes it unique. This book reflects the the city's heart and its melting pot of cultures. Through images and his subjects' own stories, Cirlos communicates not just vulnerability to fear, sadness, and anger but also resilience, strength, hope, tolerance, and perseverance. Humans of San Antonio is uniquely individual as a photography collection while celebrating the international collaborative that forms its roots.

Artist Mark Menjivar was in an antique bookshop in Fort Wayne, Indiana, when he found 4 four-leaf clovers pressed between the yellowed pages of an aged copy of 1000 Facts Worth Knowing. Their discovery beguiled Menjivar so much that he began a multiyear exploration into the concept of luck and its intersections with belief, culture, superstition, and tradition in people’s lives.

Menjivar has spent hours and days engaging people in airplanes, tattoo shops, bingo halls, international grocery stores, public parks, baseball stadiums, and voodoo shops—and out on the streets and in their homes. Along the way he documented his findings to create a physical archive that contains hundreds of objects (rings, underwear, food items, clovers, horses, pigs, herbs, rainbows, lottery strategies, seeds, day trader insights, statues, patches, crystals, spices) and the stories and pictures that go with them.

Through photographs and first person accounts, The Luck Archive takes the best of these ideas, thoughts, and objects and gives readers a glimpse into the cultures and superstitions of a colorful array of humanity.
