This is a print on demand publication. For the first time the American Philosophical Society and the Royal Society held a joint meeting in London in 1980. The program of the joint meeting consisted of two sessions, at which the following papers were presented: Foreword, by Jonathan E. Rhoads; Delayed-Choice Experiments and the Bohr-Einstein Dialog, by John Archibald Wheeler; Ways of Seeing, or Epistemology in the Arts: Unities and Disunities in Shakespearean Drama and Elizabethan Painting, by Roland Mushat Frye; and Benjamin Franklin, The British Statesman: A Reappraisal, by Esmond Wright. Edward C. Carter II began this project to create a souvenir for the American Philosophical Soc. (APS) 250th Anniversary Celebration in 1993. The APS is the oldest learned society in the U.S. and one of the most prestigious organizations of its kind in the world. The story of the APS and those men and women members who have helped promote useful knowledge throughout the years is an extraordinary story. The general observations on these achievements here are intended to serve as an introduction to this account of the APS. Now midway through its third century, its form and flavor remarkably little changed, the APS is engaged in promoting useful knowledge, as it has always been. Illustrations.

This second volume of the Trukese-English Dictionary supplements the first one, published in 1980. It provides an English-Trukese index or finderlist for the Trukese-English of the first volume & a concordance of roots, including what appear to be complex words that we cannot analyze into constituent elements. The Truk Dictionary Project was supported by the Nat. Science Found. (NSF), the Dept. of Ed. of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, the Univ. of Penna., & the Univ. of Hawaii. Illustration.

Beginning in the 1950s, Edwin Wolf 2nd embarked on a biblio’l. quest to reconstruct the library of Benjamin Franklin, which was the largest & best private library in Amer. at the time of his death & was subsequently dispersed. The contents of Franklin’s library were virtually unknown until Wolf identified the unique shelfmarks that Franklin used to organize his books. That discovery allowed Wolf to locate 2,700 titles in 1,000 vols. that Franklin actually owned. Wolf also identified a further 700 titles owned by Franklin. After wolf’s death, Kevin Hayes took up the project & brought it to fruition. This catalogue includes almost 4,000 books known to have been owned by Franklin, & the Intro. tells the complete story of Franklin’s library, its dispersal, & its reconstruction.
