High-quality residential structures are much more than merely a series of
different floor plans. First and foremost, the urban apartment house mediates
between the private refuge and the public space of the city. In the
process, boundaries between inside and outside are negotiated on a wide
variety of scales. Housing+ focuses on investigating spatial and architectural
as well as social and communicative interfaces in residential construction.
The publication is divided into four chapters – “Urban Planning,” “The
Ground Floor,” “Building Structure,” and “Façade” – to which sixty-seven
international projects are assigned. These four thematic focuses are discussed
comprehensively in the essays that introduce the chapters, and the individual
projects are analyzed in brief under these same aspects. Comparable plans—drawn especially for this book—supplement the typological descriptions. The broad spectrum of projects selected covers urban apartment block construction from towers, block structures, row houses, and gaps between buildings, to housing complexes in outlying urban areas.

Most of the buildings that will be needed in Europe in the coming decades have long since been built. The building tasks of the future lie in the skillful reuse and transformation of existing building stock, whether it be the redevelopment of historic city centers, the building of extensions onto residential structures, the expansion of public buildings, or the redevelopment of entire factory areas. Building in the existing fabric calls for highly specific approaches in planning, construction, and implementation. It spans a broad range of building tasks, from working within the guidelines of historic preservation and renovating carefully and cautiously all the way to the complete transformation of what exists. In addition to aesthetic transformation, technical aspects such as improving energy efficiency and working with contaminated building materials also play an important role.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of architectonic strategies of "continuing to build." It presents intelligent ideas and approaches for working with existing building stock and divides them into three categories according to the method selected: addition, transformation, and reuse. Presented in this volume are everyday projects such as the revitalizing of structures from the 1950s to the 1970s – for example, the renovation of Siedlung Heuried in Zurich by Adrian Streich Architekten – but also more specialized examples such as the open-air library made of elements recycled from the façade of a department store in Magdeburg-Salbke by Karo* Architekten. Interviews with experts provide helpful background information on selected topics.

Architecture that is meant to have a sensuous connection to life calls for thinking that goes far beyond form and construction. In his texts, Peter Zumthor articulates what motivates him to design his buildings, which appeal to the visitor's heart and mind in so many different ways and possess a compelling and unmistakable presence and aura. Now in its third edition, this book has been expanded to include two new essays: „Architecture and Lanscape” deals with the relationship between the structure and its surroundings, with the secret of the successful placement and topographical integration of architecture. In „The Leis Houses”, Peter Zumthor describes the genesis of two wooden houses in the town of Leis in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, thus thematizing the special challenge of integrating contemporary architecture into a traditional architectural context.

Kunststoffe sind hochleistungsfähige Werkstoffe, die seit geraumer Zeit Anwendung in der Architektur finden. Sie faszinieren durch vielfältige technische Eigenschaften. Neben diesen macht ein breites Spektrum an Formgebungs- und Bearbeitungsmethoden das Material interessant für komplexe Geometrien in Verbindung mit digitalen Planungsprozessen. Nach den Pionierbauten der 1970er Jahre hat in jüngster Zeit eine Reihe von aufsehenerregenden Bauwerken erneut den Fokus auf das technische und ästhetische Potential von Kunststoffen gelenkt.
Bislang fehlte allerdings eine umfassende Darstellung zur Verwendung von Kunststoff in der Architektur. Das vorliegende Buch schließt diese Lücke und bietet eine Einführung in die konstruktiven und gestalterischen Möglichkeiten des Werkstoffs. Es werden nicht nur Kunststoffe und ihre Eigenschaften, sondern auch Herstellung, Verarbeitung und Konstruktionsprinzipien beschrieben und für die Architektur relevante Kunststoffprodukte und -halbzeuge vorgestellt. Eine Auswahl von ca. 25 internationalen gebauten Projekten, geordnet nach Kunststoffarten und Einsatzgebiet, dokumentiert die Anwendungen von Kunststoff in der Architektur. Ein Ausblick erläutert Tendenzen in der Forschung.

Today, the name RKW Architektur + Städtebau evokes two hundred architects whose work never fails to convince. More than in any other firm, the various teams are given generous latitude for independent initiative. An instrument for the selection of color

Dealing with color is a complex subject: influenced by standards, fashions, and trends, we derive our ideas and concepts from color theories, intuition, and personal preferences. The color swatches and systems for describing color common today are based on purely quantitative principles and include well over 1,500 colors. So how do we choose a particular color?

More than ten years ago, the color chemist Katrin Trautwein established a pigment factory, starting out from Le Corbusier’s color palette. She now has more than 900 recipes for paint from which she has proposed – based on her work with architects, designers, and historical preservationists – a selection of 128 colors that produce pleasant results on their own and also combine well. Each color is presented with a sample; their potential uses and significance are also discussed.

Katrin Trautwein has lectured throughout the world on how to approach colors, given seminars, given expert opinions, advised architects, taught painters, and worked as a restorer.

Founded in 1990, Palmbout Urban Landscapes is now one of the leading urban planning offices in the Netherlands. It exemplifies current practices of urban planning in that country. Its approach is characterized by a constant search for a new relationship between urban planning, architecture, and landscape architecture. In this process of experimentation, Palmbout Urban Landscapes has established a profile not only in the field of the relationship between urban planning and architecture but above all in terms of mutual interactions between urban planning, the analysis and design of landscape, and infrastructure. The book documents some fifteen projects organized into six thematic blocks, including such extensive projects as Amsterdam Ijburg, a design for an urban extension to Amsterdam with a total area of 450 hectares, 18,000 residences, 100,000 square meters of office space, 30,000 square meters of stores, and other facilities, and Maastricht Belvedere, a restructuring of 280 hectares of a former industrial site with 4,000 residences, 100,000 square meters of office space, parking lots, and a vehicle bridge.

Soccer stadiums, airports, theaters, museums – it falls to very few architects to tackle spectacular building tasks like these. The everyday work of most architects is more often focused on "manageable" projects like the renovation, remodeling, or rebuilding of single- and multi-family houses, schools, and offices. Whatever the nature of the building task, interior construction is always a significant design and qualitative challenge that calls for highly detailed technical expertise. Plastics are high-performance materials of wide use in the built environment. Their versatile technical properties are particularly fascinating. A broad range of form-giving and finishing processes makes plastic especially interesting for complex geometries in combination with digital planning processes. Following the pioneering plastic structures of the 1970s, a number of spectacular buildings have in recent years highlighted the outstanding technical and aesthetic potential of the material.
Until now, however, there has been no systematic treatment of the use of plastic in architecture. This book seeks to fill that gap by providing an introduction to the structural and design possibilities of plastic. It introduces the material and its specific characteristics, describes various types of plastic in terms of their relevance for building, explains processing technologies and presents typical products and components. A concise presentation of twenty-five international built projects – organized by the type of application and the plastic involved – documents the broad range of plastic in architecture. With their centuries-long development, the English landscape garden, the formal French garden, as well Japanese and Chinese gardens constitute an unparalleled repository of design solutions familiar throughout the world. They are frequently drawn upon as reference works, but often in a piecemeal and haphazard fashion and from botanical or art-historical vantage points.

Fußballstadien, Flughäfen, Theater oder Museen – solch spektakuläre Projekte dürfen nur wenige Architekten zu ihren Bauaufgaben zählen. The process of coding is a systematic experimentation with signs, symbols, and the construction of larger cultural meanings. The fourth volume in the series Kontext Architektur examines the architectural-historical and -theoretical relevance of the concept of "code" from various perspectives. The authors and editors start from the premise that this concept makes for new ways of translating architecture into language. Thus, the dominance of computer simulation makes it clear that the building is no longer merely a vehicle for signs, but literally also their product. The code has penetrated, as it were, from the exterior of the building into its interior, into its structure. We are dealing with both a socio-cultural as well as with a mathematical and formal notion of code. The goal of this book is thus to arrive at a critical grasp of the contours of this vibrant conceptual tension between the cultural and the formal, the "outside" and the "inside," while also formulating questions for further exploration that are relevant for architecture.

Der Prozess des Kodierens ist ein systematisches Experimentieren mit Zeichen, Symbolen und dem Aufbau von kulturellen Bedeutungszusammenhängen. Der vierte Band der Buchreihe Kontext Architektur untersucht die architekturhistorische und -theoretische Relevanz des Begriffs „Code» aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Herausgeber und Autoren gehen davon aus, dass mit diesem eine neue Art der „Versprachlichung“ von Architektur möglich ist. So wird mit Blick auf die Dominanz der Computersimulation deutlich, dass das Gebäude nicht mehr nur Träger, sondern buchstäblich auch Erzeugnis von Zeichen ist. Der Code ist gewissermaßen von der Außenseite des Gebäudes in sein Inneres, in seine Struktur vorgedrungen. Wir haben es sowohl mit einem sozial-kulturellen, als auch mit einem mathematisch-formalen Code zu tun. Ziel des Buches ist es daher, die Konturen dieses begrifflichen Spannungsfeldes zwischen dem Kulturellen und dem Formalen, dem „Außen“ und dem „Innen“, kritisch zu ergründen und weiterführende Fragestellungen für die Architektur zu formulieren.

"Glass in Building" opens up a whole range of fascinating design possibilities for the planning architect. Glass has long served as a translucent room closing element, but its range of possible uses is actually much wider. It not only offers protection against the external world, for example, noise or fire; despite its apparent fragility, it can even take on load-bearing functions in supporting structures. In combination with various different finishing methods, materials, and coatings, it also satisfies exacting structural-physical standards. The successful combination of a regional building style of sophisticated simplicity with sustainable construction methods has made the architecture of Vorarlberg (Austria) a model for the rest of the world. This book presents particularly successful projects from recent years involving various building types and portrays their development from design idea to built detail. The documented structures by Cukrowicz Nachbaur, Christian Lenz, Oskar Leo Kaufmann + Albert Rüf, Hermann Kaufmann, Dietrich Untertrifaller, Baumschlager Eberle, Marte.Marte, and Martin Rauch place the focus on their energy strategy and formally ambitious construction methods. All of the plans and detail drawings were specially prepared for the book, which makes it easy to compare the projects.

Understanding Steel Design is based on an overall approach to understand how to design and build with steel from the perspective of its architectural applications. Steel is a material whose qualities have enormous potential for the creation of dynamic architecture. In an innovative approach to the reality of working with steel, the book takes a new look both at the state of tried-and-tested techniques and at emerging projects. Hundreds of steel structures have been observed, analyzed and appraised for this book. In-depth construction photographs by the author are complemented by technical illustrations created to look more closely at systems and details. Drawings supplied by fabricators allow greater insight into a method of working with current digital drawing tools.

The Hawkins\Brown architectural firm in London, founded in 1988 by Roger Hawkins and Russell Brown, is one of the up-and-coming offices on the international architecture scene. The spectrum of the firm’s works ranges from residences and interior design by way of office buildings and various public buildings such as theaters and university buildings all the way to urban planning, such as designs for squares and subway stations. Hawkins\Brown strives to come to an optimal result in a process that integrates all of the players. Hawkins\Brown has received numerous awards for various projects, such as the RIBA Award for its Wysing Arts Centre (2008), the New Chemistry Building of the University of Oxford (2009), and the New Art Exchange art center in Nottingham (2009) and the BREEAM Award for Eltham Hill Technology College (2008). This book documents some twenty-five buildings from the past five years. The projects presented include the Tottenham Court Road Underground Station, one of the busiest Tube stations in London with a hundred thousand passengers daily (to be completed in 2011); the Stratford Regional Station in London, an access platform for one of the major sites for the Olympic Games (to be completed in 2010); Park Hill, the master plan for a neighborhood in Sheffield (to be completed in 2011), and the Dubai Arts Pavilion in the United Arab Emirates.

Professor Ludger Hovestadts Institut für Computer Aided Architectural Design an der ETH Zürich gilt als eines der weltweit wichtigsten Institute auf der Schnittstelle zwischen Architektur und Informationstechnologie. Scarcely any other movement in architecture and design had such a lasting impact as the Bauhaus; indeed, for many it is synonymous with classic modernism. On the occasion of the institution’s 90th birthday this book traces the themes and the aesthetics of Bauhaus for our time. It shows twelve of the most important works of Bauhaus architecture from 1923-1930 and juxtaposes them with contemporary projects. The sensitive and careful photography by Gordon Watkinson delineate formal and conceptual connections between the classic and the new buildings and thus demonstrate the strong influence that the Bauhaus still exerts today.

In this sense, the "House am Horn" in Weimar by Georg Muche and Adolf Meyer from 1923 corresponds with "House of the Present" in Munich by Allmann Sattler Wappner Architects (2005). House Tugendhat in Brno by Mies van der Rohe, a masterpiece of modern architecture, challenged traditional concepts of housing – just as the experimental House R 128 in Stuttgart by Werner Sobek (2001) did. And the German Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe in Barcelona from 1929 turns out to be a source of inspiration for the Skywood House in Denham, UK, by Graham Phillips some 70 years later.

Designing and constructing load-bearing building elements

Columns, walls and floors make up the skeleton of nearly every building. This third volume in the series SCALE, Support | Materialise, takes an in-depth look at these load-bearing structures, covering the development and realization of appropriate constructions from idea and design intention all the way to constructional implementation. Following the traditional building methods of massive, cross-wall, and skeleton construction, it points the way toward a material-appropriate constructional approach to these defining structural elements – columns, walls, and floors. Special attention is given to how constructional and technical considerations can be harmonized with spatial and formal commitments. The load-bearing elements are organized, described, and explored in detail from a material as well as a formal and constructional perspective. Their practical implementation is illustrated by a series of international examples.

The minimalist concrete architecture of Tadao Ando has roots both in Japanese traditions and in Western architecture. This book begins with both contexts: it explores how Ando unites Japanese tradition with a contemporary Western architectural idiom.

By analyzing systematically and chronologically the roots and sources that have influenced the thinking of the Pritzker Prize–winning architect, the author communicates the principles and constants to which Ando’s buildings can be traced back, and at the same time he places them in the appropriate context within the architect’s characteristic ideas and intentions.

Yann Nussaume teaches at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’architecture in Paris and is the author of numerous publications on Japanese and Chinese architecture.

To continue developing existing building types in an intelligent way is a crucial task in the field of residential building. For the success of the individual design, as well as for ensuring that tried and tested structures can be utilized, repeated, and varied, a deeper grasp of the underlying types is indispensable. For this typology of residential buildings, the authors have developed systematic new presentations of the most innovative types. Each individual volume lays out the possibilities for using and transforming a particular form of residential structure.

The fourth volume deals with the types of freestanding houses, whose all-around orientation allows for the optimal arrangement of all dwellings. A presentation of the freestanding house as an isolated element and as a building block for larger structures is followed by discussions of topics such as self-sufficiency versus neighborhoods, "Raumplan" versus "plan libre," and individuality versus density.

Within each type, variants are distinguished according to type of access, number of floors, etc. The range of possible solutions is presented in uniform ground plans and sections newly drawn to scale.

What does it take to obtain significant measurement results in thermographic examinations? These guidelines convey in condensed form the authors' many years of experience in detecting thermal engineering defects and structural damage such as thermal bridges, air leaks or moisture penetration damage with a non-destructive and easily applicable method of measurement and investigation.

As well as providing an introduction to the physical fundamentals of thermography, the book offers an up-to-date overview of the technology, structure, standards and selection criteria of common thermographic systems. Using selected examples, it shows the many possibilities and areas of application of infrared thermography as well as the limits of its use.

Founded by Paolo Brescia and Tommaso Principi as a design network between Milan, London and Mumbai, OBR explores new modes of contemporary living, developing an architecture that responds sensitively to and stimulates interaction with its environment, while adapting to the changing needs of society. François Valentiny and Hubert Hermann founded their studio shortly after graduating from the University of Applied Arts Vienna where they both studied under Wilhelm Holzbauer. Soon after, they staked out their architectural vision with their urban villa for the Berlin IBA.

Stories from the Inside is a retrospective looking back over forty years and telling the stories behind their many designs and buildings. Six richly illustrated volumes contain material from the archives of the Valentiny Foundation and present current projects with a focus on cultural, residential, administrative and leisure facilities.

The final volume documents the 15–19 Wisswee project in Remerschen. Intellectual journeys and international projects culminate here, from the World Exhibition Pavilion in Shanghai to the Theatro de l'Occitane in Bahia and the Haus für Mozart in Salzburg.

In urban regions, airport areas are inevitable. They are key infrastructure elements that involve important commercial and spatial factors.

Taking the example of Charles de Gaulle airport (CDG) in Paris, the author analyzes the planning parameters that make visible the key factors influencing urban development. Step by step, she reveals the history of the development of CDG airport in Paris, investigates the conflicts perceived by the planners, and from that derives generally feasible approaches that can be applied to cope with conflicting paradigms. The book is intended for town planners, municipalities, and architects, and makes a practical contribution to establishing and assessing planning strategies for airport areas.

Als gelernter Zimmermann war Rudolf Wäger (1941–2019) in der Architektur Autodidakt. Das 1965 eigenhändig errichtete „Würfelhaus", ein emblematisches, auf das Wesentliche in Material und Gestalt reduziertes Kleinhaus, wurde zum vielbeachteten Pionierwerk der „Vorarlberger Baukünstler" – jener Gruppe, die den internationalen Ruf der Vorarlberger Baukultur prägte: klug, maßvoll und perfekt in Planung und Ausführung. Neben der Vielzahl an kostengünstigen Einfamilienhäusern sind seine Entwürfe für Wohnanlagen und Reihenhäuser von Baugemeinschaften noch heute wegweisend in Raumgestalt und Konstruktion.

Das Konzept dieser ersten Monographie ist noch in Zusammenarbeit mit Rudolf Wäger entstanden. Anlässlich seines 80. Geburtstags im Jahr 2021 eröffnen Buch und Ausstellung einen umfassenden Zugang zu seinem Oeuvre.

Claude-Nicolas Ledoux (1736-1806) gilt heute als Hauptvertreter der französischen Revolutionsarchitektur. Sein vielgestaltiger Erfindungsreichtum griff die Architekturideale seiner Zeit auf und entwickelte daraus kühne Utopien.

The way public spaces are designed reflects the period in which they were created. However, in our globalized world of experience and images the desire for uniqueness tends to achieve the opposite: increasingly, designers of open spaces resort to the same devices and thereby distance themselves from the urban context.

In recent years, Baumschlager Eberle architectural practice has successfully continued its international trajector. Between 2010 and 2020, around 600 buildings, projects, and competitions have been completed, including housing projects, hospitals, compnay headquarters, university campuses, and the 2226 building: an office building without Hearing System.

The book documents in chronological order in the form of of an annotated and commented catalogue of works all projects, competitions, and studies of these years. Over 50 completed buildings are comprehensively presented. 14 of the most important projects have an in-depth presentation: with images, plans, and other material as well as a detailed text.

In addition, three essays and three interviews deal with the central issues of density, resources, and open building.

Claude-Nicolas Ledoux (1736-1806) is today regarded as chief representative of French revolutionary architecture. With his extraordinary inventiveness he projected the architectural ideals of his era. Ledoux’s influential buildings and projects are presented and interpreted both aesthetically and historically in this book. His best-known projects – the Royal Saltwords of Arc-et-Senans, the tollgates of Paris, the ideal city of Chaux – reveal the architect’s allegiance to the principles of antiquity and Renaissance but also illustrate the evolution of his own utopian language. With the French Revolution, Ledoux ceased building as his contemporaries perceived him as a royal architect. He focused on the development of his architectural theory and redefined the vision of the modern architect.

For several decades, 20th century architecture thrived in Cuba and a wealth of buildings was realized prior to the revolution 1959 and in its wake. The designs comprise luxurious nightclubs and stylish hotels, sports facilities, elegant private homes and apartment complexes. Drawing on the vernacular, their architects defined a way to be modern and Cuban at the same time – creating an architecture oscillating between tradition and avantgarde.

Audacious concrete shells, curving ramps, elegant brises-soleils and a fluidity of interior and exterior spaces are characteristic of an airy, often colorful architecture well-suited to life in the tropics. New photographs and drawings were specially prepared for this publication. A biographical survey portraits the 40 most important Cuban architects of the era.

Traditional building methods – such as those used in pueblos, timbered houses, or the Japanese minka – exist in fascinating diversity and create the face of a region. However, as a result of globalization they have been marginalized in many places. In the fastest developing countries in particular, a wealth of experience that goes back hundreds of years is being irretrievably lost, even though valuable insights can be gained for modern building.

Using the examples of selected domestic buildings from all continents, 30 international experts demonstrate why we can still learn from vernacular architecture; they analyze the cultural context and the adaptation to topographic/climactic conditions, and focus on the local materials used as well as on the construction, the building process, and the necessary maintenance.

Network of superlatives

Frederick Kiesler was a committed networker and communicated regularly with the who’s who of the avant-garde. He was an important intermediary between the visionary ideas of the European Moderne movement and the up-and-coming New York art scene.

About 20 contributions portray his colorful life and his multifaceted oeuvre in various contexts, and place Kiesler in a dialog with the most important artists and architects of his time.
