Tragwerk, Gebäudehülle und Ausbau werden in drei Hauptkapiteln beleuchtet und zum jeweiligen Auftakt die Konstruktionsprinzipien moderner Bauweisen übersichtlich einander gegenübergestellt. Räumliche Darstellungen im Massstab 1/10 und 1/20 erlauben die vertiefende Betrachtung anhand ausgewählter gebauter Beispiele.

François Valentiny and Hubert Hermann founded their studio shortly after graduating from the University of Applied Arts Vienna where they both studied under Wilhelm Holzbauer. Soon after, they staked out their architectural vision with their urban villa for the Berlin IBA.

Stories from the Inside is a retrospective looking back over forty years and telling the stories behind their many designs and buildings. Six richly illustrated volumes contain material from the archives of the Valentiny Foundation and present current projects with a focus on cultural, residential, administrative and leisure facilities.

The final volume documents the 15–19 Wisswee project in Remerschen. Intellectual journeys and international projects culminate here, from the World Exhibition Pavilion in Shanghai to the Theatro de l'Occitane in Bahia and the Haus für Mozart in Salzburg.

In urban regions, airport areas are inevitable. They are key infrastructure elements that involve important commercial and spatial factors.

Taking the example of Charles de Gaulle airport (CDG) in Paris, the author analyzes the planning parameters that make visible the key factors influencing urban development. Step by step, she reveals the history of the development of CDG airport in Paris, investigates the conflicts perceived by the planners, and from that derives generally feasible approaches that can be applied to cope with conflicting paradigms. The book is intended for town planners, municipalities, and architects, and makes a practical contribution to establishing and assessing planning strategies for airport areas.

Als gelernter Zimmermann war Rudolf Wäger (1941–2019) in der Architektur Autodidakt. Das 1965 eigenhändig errichtete „Würfelhaus", ein emblematisches, auf das Wesentliche in Material und Gestalt reduziertes Kleinhaus, wurde zum vielbeachteten Pionierwerk der „Vorarlberger Baukünstler" – jener Gruppe, die den internationalen Ruf der Vorarlberger Baukultur prägte: klug, maßvoll und perfekt in Planung und Ausführung. Neben der Vielzahl an kostengünstigen Einfamilienhäusern sind seine Entwürfe für Wohnanlagen und Reihenhäuser von Baugemeinschaften noch heute wegweisend in Raumgestalt und Konstruktion.

Das Konzept dieser ersten Monographie ist noch in Zusammenarbeit mit Rudolf Wäger entstanden. Anlässlich seines 80. Geburtstags im Jahr 2021 eröffnen Buch und Ausstellung einen umfassenden Zugang zu seinem Oeuvre.

Critique of Architecture offers a renewed and radical theorization of the relations between capital and architecture. It explicates the theoretical gymnastics through which architecture legitimates its services to neoliberalism, examines the discipline’s production of platforms for happily compliant consumers, and challenges its entrepreneurial self-image. Critique of Architecture also addresses the discourse of autonomy, questioning its capacity to engage effectively with the terms and conditions of capitalism today, analyses the post-political turns of contemporary architecture theory, and reckons with the legacies and limitations of critical theory.

Sound protection may even play an important role at the design stage of a project, because the orientation of a building and its plan layout may influence it. Important factors to be taken into account are noise impacting on the building from the outside and noise generated by people and technical equipment inside the building.

Basics Sound Insulation conveys to the reader a thorough understanding of sound protection requirements in the design and construction of a building. To start with, the basics of acoustics are explained, including basic terms of physics, how sound is generated and propagated, and how sound is perceived. This is followed by an explanation of how sound emissions are assessed and what sound-reducing and design options are available to the designer.

Claude-Nicolas Ledoux (1736-1806) gilt heute als Hauptvertreter der französischen Revolutionsarchitektur. Sein vielgestaltiger Erfindungsreichtum griff die Architekturideale seiner Zeit auf und entwickelte daraus kühne Utopien.

Dieses Buch stellt Ledoux‘ Bauten und Projekte in ihrer ästhetischen wie historischen Bedeutung dar. An seinen Werken – die königlichen Salinen von Arc-et-Senans, das Zollgebäude von Paris, die Idealstadt von Chaux – zeigt sich, wie diese Architektur aus der Antike und der Renaissance schöpft, aber auch eine ganz eigene Formensprache findet.

Mit der Revolution war Ledoux‘ bauliches Schaffen beendet, da er den Zeitgenossen als Architekt des Königs galt. Er widmete sich nun der theoretischen Arbeit und entfaltete seine Vision des modernen Architekten.

Paolo Brescia und Tommaso Principi haben OBR im Jahr 2000 als Design-Netzwerk zwischen Mailand, London und Mumbai gegründet, das neue Arten des zeitgenössischen Lebens untersucht. The way public spaces are designed reflects the period in which they were created. However, in our globalized world of experience and images the desire for uniqueness tends to achieve the opposite: increasingly, designers of open spaces resort to the same devices and thereby distance themselves from the urban context.

This commentated anthology contains essential passages from eight important architecture and urban design theory texts from the 1960s to the 2010s. With these excerpts, the editors discursively outline the concept of form as a relational field of tension between man and material. The relational element is treated not only as a topos, but above all the interpretational perspective of architectural theory.

The texts are arranged under the guiding themes of Type, Process, Place and Things. The texts themselves were written by authors including Christopher Alexander, Oswald Matthias Ungers, Fumihiko Maki, Alison and Peter Smithson, Lucius Burckhardt, Bruno Latour, and Manuel de Solà-Morales. They offer a paradigmatic foundation that encourages further research and the continued view through the "relational lens."

Dieses Buch zeichnet ein intimes und ungewöhnliches Porträt der Architektur der Avantgarde. Die Autoren haben „Oral History"-Interviews mit ehemaligen Bewohnern geführt und dabei heitere wie auch ergreifende Erinnerungen aufgezeichnet.

In recent years, Baumschlager Eberle architectural practice has successfully continued its international trajector. Between 2010 and 2020, around 600 buildings, projects, and competitions have been completed, including housing projects, hospitals, compnay headquarters, university campuses, and the 2226 building: an office building without Hearing System.

The book documents in chronological order in the form of of an annotated and commented catalogue of works all projects, competitions, and studies of these years. Over 50 completed buildings are comprehensively presented. 14 of the most important projects have an in-depth presentation: with images, plans, and other material as well as a detailed text.

In addition, three essays and three interviews deal with the central issues of density, resources, and open building.

Claude-Nicolas Ledoux (1736-1806) is today regarded as chief representative of French revolutionary architecture. With his extraordinary inventiveness he projected the architectural ideals of his era. Ledoux’s influential buildings and projects are presented and interpreted both aesthetically and historically in this book. His best-known projects – the Royal Saltwords of Arc-et-Senans, the tollgates of Paris, the ideal city of Chaux – reveal the architect’s allegiance to the principles of antiquity and Renaissance but also illustrate the evolution of his own utopian language. With the French Revolution, Ledoux ceased building as his contemporaries perceived him as a royal architect. He focused on the development of his architectural theory and redefined the vision of the modern architect.

Bereits in der Entwurfsphase eines Bauvorhabens kann der Schallschutz eine bedeutende Rolle für die Gebäudeausrichtung sowie die Grundrissgestaltung spielen. Zu berücksichtigen sind hierbei der Lärm, der von außen auf ein Gebäude einwirkt, sowie der Lärm, der durch den Menschen und technische Anlagen innerhalb des Gebäudes verursacht wird.

Basics Schallschutz vermittelt dem Leser ein grundlegendes Verständnis der schalltechnischen Anforderungen für das Planen und Konstruieren. Zunächst werden die Grundlagen der Akustik erläutert, wobei auf die physikalischen Grundbegriffe, die Schallentstehung und -ausbreitung sowie die Schallempfindung eingegangen wird. Dann wird erklärt, wie Schallimmissionen beurteilt und welche lärmmindernden und gestalterischen Möglichkeiten für die Planung werden können.

Vom Pueblo zum Fachwerkhaus oder dem japanischen Minka – traditionelle Bauweisen zeigen eine faszinierende Vielfalt und prägen mit ihrem Erscheinungsbild das Gesicht von Regionen. Doch im Zuge der Globalisierung werden sie vieler Orts zurückgedrängt. For several decades, 20th century architecture thrived in Cuba and a wealth of buildings was realized prior to the revolution 1959 and in its wake. The designs comprise luxurious nightclubs and stylish hotels, sports facilities, elegant private homes and apartment complexes. Drawing on the vernacular, their architects defined a way to be modern and Cuban at the same time – creating an architecture oscillating between tradition and avantgarde.

Audacious concrete shells, curving ramps, elegant brises-soleils and a fluidity of interior and exterior spaces are characteristic of an airy, often colorful architecture well-suited to life in the tropics. New photographs and drawings were specially prepared for this publication. A biographical survey portraits the 40 most important Cuban architects of the era.

In Natural Communication, the author criticizes the current paradigm of specific goal orientation in the complexity sciences and proposes an alternative that envisions a fundamental architectonics of communication. His model of "natural communication" encapsulates modern theoretical concepts from mathematics and physics, in particular category theory and quantum theory. From these fields it abstracts precise concepts such as to constitute a terminological basis for this theory which offers the opportunity to open up novel ways of thinking about complexity. The author is convinced that it is only possible to establish a continuity and coherence with contemporary thinking, especially with respect to complexity, through looking into the past.

A comprehensive reference work on vernacular architecture

Traditional building methods – such as those used in pueblos, timbered houses, or the Japanese minka – exist in fascinating diversity and create the face of a region. However, as a result of globalization they have been marginalized in many places. In the fastest developing countries in particular, a wealth of experience that goes back hundreds of years is being irretrievably lost, even though valuable insights can be gained for modern building.

Using the examples of selected domestic buildings from all continents, 30 international experts demonstrate why we can still learn from vernacular architecture; they analyze the cultural context and the adaptation to topographic/climactic conditions, and focus on the local materials used as well as on the construction, the building process, and the necessary maintenance.

Combining typefaces is one of the great challenges and, at the same time, a continuing allure for typographers and designers: is it meant to be extravagant or should it only be carried out to a limited degree or, ideally, not at all? Which fonts harmonize with each other, and which don’t? Which ones complement each other or even enhance each other? There are few answers to be found in the professional literature.

This handbook demonstrates that it is possible to determine criteria for the combining of typefaces. By looking at the shape of typefaces in detail and creating a revised classification of fonts, it conveys a deeper understanding of the diversity of typefaces and, based on a systematic analysis of analogy and contrast, it establishes the urgently necessary findings required for combining typefaces. An indispensable standard work for typographers and graphic designers.

Network of superlatives

Frederick Kiesler was a committed networker and communicated regularly with the who’s who of the avant-garde. He was an important intermediary between the visionary ideas of the European Moderne movement and the up-and-coming New York art scene.

About 20 contributions portray his colorful life and his multifaceted oeuvre in various contexts, and place Kiesler in a dialog with the most important artists and architects of his time.

The publication on the occasion of the 20 year anniversary of the Friedrich Kiesler Foundation deals with his relationship with the Bauhaus, surrealism, and the New York School, as well as with personalities such as Richard Buckminster Fuller, Marcel Duchamp, Arshile Gorky, Theo van Doesburg, Piet Mondrian, Hans Arp, Sigfried Giedion, and others.
