Compelled by the global environmental crisis, the building industry is moving toward a paradigm shift that significantly impacts the way we build, design, and interact with the natural environments around us. The built spaces of the future need to disrupt the conventional design practices that have "elevated" the building sector to the largest contributor of manmade CO₂ emissions globally. Achieving net-zero embodied and operational emissions in future construction will require the active participation of design, construction, and building professionals, as well as the prompt implementation of decarbonization solutions. These solutions, which restructure the way humans interact with their ecosystems, entail a reevaluation and reinterpretation of architecture and its role as a transformative agent. GAM 21 collects perspectives and proposals on how to make a radical shift towards environmental transformation successful.

While most high-rise buildings continue to be built in China and the USA, Australia and especially Singapore have recently emerged as hotspots for high-rise architecture. Furthermore, the trend toward mixed-use skyscrapers, which have repeatedly been among the finalists of The International High-Rise Award since 2014, continues unabated. Former specific features such as extensive greening or the construction of high-rise clusters have long since become standard. Due to the shortage of suitable building sites and growing environmental awareness, existing buildings are increasingly coming into focus in high-rise construction.

Best High-Rises 2024/25 presents 32 of the most exciting recently completed high-rise projects that combine sustainability, external form and internal spatial qualities, and social aspects into exemplary designs that point the way to the future. The Neue Nationalgalerie on the Berlin Kulturforum is an architectural icon as well as the crowning conclusion of architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s life work. An outstandingly successful and sensitive refurbishment and modernization project was carried out for the building’s most significant overhaul since its opening in 1968. It complies with the requirements of a contemporary museum exhibition facility, as well as monument-preservation guidelines. David Chipperfield Architects developed the renovation concept under the motto of "As much Mies as possible."

This publication provides deep insight into the planning, execution, monument preservation, and restoration from the perspective of those involved. The exemplary handling of the historical fabric is presented in design documents and numerous large-format photographs that impressively illustrate the design stage, the construction site, and the refurbishment results.

The first German building exhibition took place in Dresden in 1900, establishing a curatorial practice that lives on today in the International Building Exhibitions (IBA), which continue to draw millions of visitors. In 1970s Vienna, civic protests against the demolition and replacement of old buildings with new ones led to both a paradigm shift and a more “gentle” approach towards interventions in the city’s historic neighborhoods. After years of investigation and experimentation, the Sanfte Stadterneuerung (gentle urban renewal) programme was adopted to promote the renovation of existing residential buildings and participatory processes in neighborhoods. The Senegalese building collective Studio Suddo Neuve is calling for a paradigm shift in the West African construction sector. The collective has been focusing on substituting the ubiquitously-present concrete blocks with earth-based materials. While this volume primarily documents the practical aspects of building with earth, it also examines urbanization and construction processes in the region. The detailed manual for the production and application of earth blocks underlines the contribution nature-based products can have for the transformation toward regenerative building practices and suggests its potential for global application. Built in 1989, the Kornversuchsspeicher or Grain Test Silo was created as a conceptually ambitious experimental prototype for the grain storage required to supply the over one million inhabitants of Berlin. After being used by a string of haulage companies, it was left vacant. However, the protected monument has been turned into an attraction in the Europacity development area opposite Berlin’s central station in 2023. Its spectacular renovation by AFF architects, which received the Architekturpreis Beton award, turned the industrial structure into a mixed-use building hosting offices, a gallery, and a restaurant.
Berlin-based photographer Harf Zimmermann, co-founder of the internationally renowned OSTKREUZ agency, documented the renovation project over the course of five years with his analogue large-format camera. City streets form the backbone of public spaces. In addition to serve mobility, they provide opportunities for shopping, entertainment, strolling, and much more. They are urban spaces shaped and characterized by the facades of buildings. In the face of today’s climatic requirements, how can we design the city streets of the future to be distinctive and inviting urban spaces?

For over a decade, the Konferenz zur Schönheit und Lebensfähigkeit der Stadt has dedicated itself to fundamental questions in urban development. The contributions in this volume present discussions from experts in both the theory and practice of a range of different disciplines, as well as from the heads of various German city planning departments, on how the functional and traffic needs of city streets can be combined with their architectural, urban design, and ecological requirements.

Using 150 examples from over 70 German cities, it illustrates, analyzes, and compares a wide range of urban spaces, courtyards, squares, and streets. Editor Christoph Mäckler builds on the textbooks of the early twentieth century by Cornelius Gurlitt, Raymond Unwin, and Josef Stübben and offers a well-grounded framework for city planning.

Berlin, the Electropolis: architecturally and aesthetically, they are still impressive, but technical and economic progress has made the buildings of electricity supply redundant today. Innovative concepts are needed to uncover the huge potential of these masterpieces of industrial architecture for new scenarios of use.
