Apollo VII-XVII
Regular price $85.00 Save $-85.00Apollo VII–XVII: Revised and Extended Edition — A collection of photographs taken by NASA’s Apollo program astronauts, 1968–1972
Apollo VII–XVII: Revised and Extended Edition is a landmark visual chronicle of one of humanity’s greatest achievements: the exploration of space through NASA’s Apollo missions. This newly expanded edition presents 255 powerful, often never-before-seen images, carefully curated from over 27,000 photographs taken by the astronauts themselves between 1968 and 1972.
Photography has always played a vital role in documenting human history, and few chapters are as visually compelling as the Apollo era. Fortunately, a small, daring group of astronauts, trained not only as explorers but also as photographers, captured these journeys with clarity, courage, and a distinct artistic sensibility. They brought back images that reshaped how we see ourselves: fragile lifeforms on a small, blue planet, adrift in the vast black void of space.
First published in 2018, Apollo VII–XVII was the first book to make use of NASA’s newly available high-resolution scans of the original 70mm film. For this revised edition, the authors have returned to the archive to rework many of the images, add new discoveries, and further refine the visual narrative.
Every frame has been re-evaluated, digitally corrected, and meticulously restored to preserve the authenticity of the source material while enhancing its visual impact. The result is a rich, immediate encounter with the Apollo archive, restoring its full emotional and technical power.
The new edition offers an immersive visual experience that reveals more detail and depth than ever before. Thanks to high-end production values and luxurious heavier paper stock, the print quality allows the images to be reproduced with exceptional sharpness and tonal richness. It presents the Apollo archive with a level of craftsmanship that surpasses previous publications.
You’ll also find newly unearthed panoramic shots, rare astronaut portraits, and a dedicated chapter on the specialized cameras and rigorous photography training developed for space—making it a treasure for both photography enthusiasts and space aficionados.
Adding further insight, two exclusive contributions from Apollo astronauts deepen the narrative. Walter Cunningham’s in-depth essay, written before his passing in 2023, shares his personal story of photographing Earth from orbit aboard Apollo 7—a unique first-hand account of space photography in its earliest form. And new to this edition, Rusty Schweickart reflects on his dual role as astronaut and image-maker aboard Apollo 9, exploring the creative and philosophical dimensions of photographing space.
More than a coffee table book, this volume is a cultural artifact, a photographic record, and a tribute to one of the most transformative efforts in human history. Whether you’re passionate about space, photography, design, or exploration, Apollo VII–XVII offers an unforgettable glimpse into the moment humanity first left Earth, and looked back.

Sumo
Regular price $29.99 Save $-29.99Sumo offers a unique behind-the-scenes view into the secret and fascinating world of sumo, a living breathing showcase of ancient Japan.
Sumo is one of the oldest sports in the world, stretching back over 2,000 years. Within the Japanese establishment, there exists a great sense of pride that so little about the sport has changed in the past millennium. Wrestlers still live by a strict code, in and outside of the dojo, and to commit to the sport requires complete devotion from an early age. As Japan has surged forwards into modernity, this fascinating corner of culture has remained anchored to the past. Gaining behind-the-scenes access is notoriously difficult as sumo is a sport shrouded in secrecy. A full year was spent by the author knocking on doors and filling out endless paperwork before he was eventually granted permission to chronicle the lives of wrestlers; a world where history, culture, pride, and athleticism combine. Sumo documents the strict codes to which wrestlers adhere. The photographs bring to life the stringent dietary and training regimes which require enormous dedication and the many unique practices which make sumo fascinating – a living, breathing showcase of ancient Japan.
This book offers a unique set of over 95 photographs that are sequenced rhythmically and poetically to give the armchair viewer an insight into not only the drama and excitement of the tournaments, but also the dedication of the wrestlers and the sacrifices they make to have a chance to compete at the highest level.
Mastering Composition
Regular price $29.99 Save $-29.99Fully updated to include the latest technologies and software, Mastering Composition is the definitive guide for taking great photos, considering visual weight, balance, negative space, and depth.
Author and professional photographer Richard Garvey-Williams argues that success lies in a combination of four elements: an impactful subject; dynamic composition; effective use of lighting; and, perhaps the most crucial, an ability to invoke an emotional response in the viewer. Citing examples gleaned from a study of history (the Ancient Greeks' Golden Rule, Fibonacci's mathematical ratio, and the principles known as Gestalt theory) the author analyses the concepts, rules and guidelines that define successful composition in photography and offers practical guidance to achieving great results.
In clear, concise and jargon-free text he also considers the role of tone and color in good composition and offers invaluable tips and the tools to help the photographer take control of the creative process. The book is illustrated with examples of the author's own beautiful nature photography, along with diagrams and notation to explain techniques most clearly. A final chapter in this definitive guide for all serious photographers discusses photography and its relationship to art before offering a considered conclusion to the exploration of this fascinating topic.
From Dawn to Dusk
Regular price $26.99 Save $-26.99From Dawn to Dusk is a practical, hands-on guide to mastering the techniques required to take better, more creative, landscape photographs.
This updated edition of From Dawn to Dusk features new text and photographs to cover the latest advances in photographic technology. The book’s unique structure leads the reader on an hour-by-hour, picture-by-picture journey from dawn to dusk, and into night, with each chapter focussing on the benefits and challenges of shooting at that particular time of the day.
The book is structured around the available light during the different times of the day, highlighting suitable landscape types, styles of photography and processing techniques for each moment. There are regular technique panels to help readers hone their camera skills, and each chapter concludes with an awe-inspiring double-page image that demonstrates the results that are possible – accompanied by an extended caption and a personal anecdote from the photographer. One of the key purposes of the book is to illustrate that – contrary to common belief – you don’t always need the perfect light or the best time of day to shoot great landscapes. There are opportunities throughout each day (and night), and in different light and weather, to create fantastic images. The theme is reflected in a design that leads the reader from dark to bright to dark once more, reflecting the light in the images. The result is a uniquely engaging guide that will help the reader to become a master of light: that key component of all landscape photography.

Street photography has a tradition dating back over a century, and today's digital world finds it enjoying a renaissance—yet there is little expert advice available. This is a practical guide to capturing the candid moments that reveal life at its most dramatic, absurd, or beautiful. Brian Lloyd Duckett demonstrates how the successful street photographer needs to be an unseen observer, with the camera a mirror of everyday scenes and unaware subjects.
A guide to equipment and technical skills leads into lessons in finding inspiration, developing projects, and composing different subjects and scenes—laying the foundations for you to impose your personality on your photography and develop your own distinctive style. The book also addresses such key issues as staying safe and within the law when photographing on the street, and the art of building an audience for your images.

She finds light and space, swimming pools and enticing views of the stunning natural surroundings encroaching through the walls. Posing for her in bedrooms, garages and patios, Davies discovers vibrant multicultural communities, eccentric stories of hopes and dreams, tales of gridlocked traffic, urban sprawl, air pollution and all aspects of the entertainment industry.
Among the voices are well-known figures, Linda Ramone and actor Eric McCormack, accompanied by a cast of models, producers, a high-court judge, artists, stylists, writers, musicians, lawyers, magicians and many more.

Vest Pocket Kodak & The First World War, The
Regular price $12.95 Save $-12.95When one thinks about the First World War, one doesn’t immediately imagine the soldiers recording the horrors of trench warfare by taking snaps with their pocket cameras. But that is exactly what happened.
Launched in April 1912, the Vest Pocket Kodak was one of the world’s first compact cameras. About the height and width of today’s iPhone, it was small enough to fit into the pocket of a waistcoat (the American ‘vest’) and became something of a craze on the eve of the war. It was advertised as the ‘Soldier’s Kodak’ and troops were encouraged to ‘Make your own picture record of the War.’ With the military banning journalists from reporting early setbacks in the war, newspaper editors offered soldiers a prize for their VPK photographs of £1,000 – over ten times a lieutenant’s salary. The images they preserved offer us a remarkably personal viewpoint, and create a fascinating link between the camera and the conflict.
The first half of the book sets the technology and timeline of the camera against those of the war. It looks at how the Vest Pocket Kodak was developed and advertised, and tells the story of its significance in creating a unique visual account of the Great War. The second half presents a commemorative album of images taken with the camera, a remarkable record of a lost generation, and a tragic reflection of the manufacturer’s advertising by-line: ‘Kodak pictures never let you forget.’

There are also numerous technical issues to resolve, such as striking a balance between ISO and noise, dealing with high dynamic range, and maintaining the best possible image quality when the laws of physics are working against you. Yet, just as the demands placed upon the photographer are exceptional, so too are the images that can be created when you push your camera to its limits.
Packed with stunning photography throughout, the author's expert advice, tips, and tricks are augmented by Masterclasses from some of the world's leading long exposure champions, each sharing the secrets of their success. Mastering Landscape Photography
Regular price $29.95 Save $-29.95The definitive guide to capturing beautiful and compelling images outdoors.
Landscape photography can be a solitary experience, but award-winning landscape photographer David Taylor believes creativity requires a certain amount of peaceful contemplation to flourish. What skills or requirements, therefore, does a successful landscape photographer need? An ability not to mind getting cold or wet is one that springs to immediately to mind, but a landscape photographer also has to understand how the weather and the seasons affect the landscape. Navigational skills are useful to find potential subjects. Above all, empathy for the natural world is a prerequisite.
Beginning with a comprehensive guide to the choice of cameras, lenses, and other equipment and accessories, Taylor goes on to discuss the fundamentals of exposure—aperture, shutter speed, ISO, dynamic range—and an appreciation of the effects of light on the landscape, at various times of the day and in all types of weather. Practical advice on planning for an outdoor shoot covers the basics of assembling a travel kit, using maps and choosing a location, consulting sunrise and sunset times, weather forecasts, and predicting tides. The author's own stunning photography transports the reader from coastal regions to hills and mountains, through woodland and moorland, in all seasons and weather, in the light of day and the dark of night. Authoritative text explains the theories and "rules" of composition: the importance of balance, harmony and symmetry, the power of leading lines, visual weight, and the ability to create depth in an image. A final instructive chapter details the practical techniques of postproduction workflow, from the processing of images to proofing, to displaying or printing the final results.
Extinction
Regular price $45.00 Save $-45.00Extinction explores endangered and extinct species and the factors threatening them through a behind-the-scenes lens on one of the most important sets of natural history collections in the world, at the Field Museum in Chicago.
Author Marc Schlossman combines unique photographs of specimens from the Field Museum in Chicago with informative and insightful text about the species themselves, reasons for decline, and the conservation efforts in place to prevent further extinction.
The specimens revealed in this book are not on public display and the only way to see many of them is through these photographs, the result of ten years cataloguing key species from the museum’s zoology and botany collections. The images lead the reader to the species’ stories, promoting a greater understanding of mankind’s stewardship of life on Earth at a critical time in history.
Extinction illustrates the crucial importance of museum collections for conservation, education, and research.
The book has been designed to have pages with black backgrounds for extinct species and white backgrounds for species nearing extinction. A yellow flag highlights conservation successes, which are interspersed throughout. The conservation success stories highlight the positive work that is happening and the potential there is to prevent the extinction of these and other species.

The Beatles

The best-selling band in history, with sales of over a billion, The Beatles John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr have had more number-one albums and sold more singles in the UK than any other act, and achieved more sales in the USA than any other artist.
Photography in the book includes:
- Personal moments
- Backstage on tour
- Action shots on stage
- Crowds, fans and frenzied streets
They became one of the most critically acclaimed acts in popular music. Formed in Liverpool in 1960, The Beatles had their roots in skiffle and 1950s rock 'n' roll, but as their career progressed, they dabbled in many musical forms, including pop ballads and psychedelic rock. In the early days, they honed their skills playing clubs in their hometown and Hamburg, Germany, while manager Brian Epstein polished their act. He brokered a record deal with EMI producer George Martin, who helped the band maximise their musical potential. The Beatles' first single, Love Me Do, was released in 1962, becoming a modest hit. Towards the end of that year, they recorded Please Please Me, their first number one.
The following year saw the advent of Beatlemania, and they became known as the 'Fab Four'; by early 1964, they had become international stars, leading the so-called 'British Invasion' by musical acts of the United States.
Their stature grew throughout the remainder of the 1960s, even though their last commercial concert took place in 1966. During that time, they released many influential and innovative albums, including Revolver, Sgt: Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Abbey Road.
This book takes a nostalgic and affectionate look at Britain's most famous pop group, from their early days in the 1960s to the band's break-up, with the aid of almost 300 photographs from the extensive archives of Mirrorpix.

Robert Rauschenberg's New York
Regular price $49.95 Save $-49.95Marking the centennial of Robert Rauschenberg’s birth, this long over-due publication examines the central importance of photography to the artist.
Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) was a quintessential artist of post-war New York and one of the most influential creators of twentieth-century America, best known as a painter and graphic artist who paved the way for Pop Art. Robert Rauschenberg’s New York takes a deep dive into the artist’s engagement with photographs, focusing on his relationship with New York City. Seminal early photographs set the stage for the entire volume, examining the artist’s early life and career and the New York arts scene of the 1950s and early 1960s. Later on, the career-defining photographs made by Rauschenberg in New York City between 1979 and 1981 are presented alongside a small selection of his paintings and prints that reproduce and repurpose the photographs in new ways. Here photographic imagery is seen in a new context, as source material for further artistic creativity and improvisation.
Publication accompanies the exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York.
Magic Ireland
Regular price $39.95 Save $-39.95Under the Spell of the Emerald Isle: Where Myths are Alive
The spirit of Ireland is captured in this volume through its landscapes and legends. Renowned photographer Max Schmid, who has traveled the island for decades, has portrayed its unique charm in his distinctive, mystical images – from the gentle coasts in the east to the verdant hills and dramatic cliffs of the north and west. Author Gabrielle Alioth, who has lived in Ireland for over forty years, retells the country's sagas and myths with a touch of humor and a twinkle in her eye.
These stories form a vital foundation for the identity of this history-rich island and remain vibrant to this day. The classic Irish legends of the Ulster Cycle and the Fenian Cycle serve as the basis for her texts. Originally rooted in Celtic times, these tales have been reimagined and adapted over the centuries to fit contemporary (narrative) contexts – as they are also in this book.

Leaves and Light
Regular price $45.00 Save $-45.00Since we imagine something intentional about a community both in its formation and its function as a new entity, there is something both baffling and attractive about the idea of a “plant community.” Do plants know what they’re doing? Some claim our attention: good to eat, good to smell, get stuck to your clothes. For a majority, plants or plant communities arouse a restricted admiration: lawn. A lawn can be a plant community, an atrocious one to be sure. But I’m thinking of plant communities in the eyes of God, where the plants foregather in ancient times and set out toward infinity. These deserve the word community, and the individuals who make them up are original in the extreme, as they must be: they live in a tough town.
It is our luck that the eternal aspects of these daredevils have fallen to the eye of artist Lindy Smith who has used the sun in ways known best to her to reveal the souls of plants as lives, as archetypes, as semaphore. Their shapes seem to belong to dreams while for all their unexpectedness they are no more accidental than dreams. What we see emerges from the lives they’ve lived in deep time; their importance hangs over them as an aura.
We long to say their names: milkweed, mullein, bulrush, fescue, rush, yarrow. Or, on the other hand, sumpweed, pigweed, spurge. They belong to the things we see for the first time while recognizing we’ve known them always, hence the longing to absorb their eternal forms. Creation—we have it by our fingertips, just. Smith’s images Smith has discovered the souls of so many plants I thought I knew and left their essential signatures on my mind that I will never see them in the same way again, or more to the point, forget them again. I wish I knew enough about the process to understand what help the sun has been in finding these plants out. But here they are, seen by an artist, and what help it is.—from the Preface by Tom McGuane
The Night Albums
Regular price $29.95 Save $-29.95Through a series of case studies spanning the history of photography, The Night Albums takes up the provocations of artists who collectively redefine how we experience visibility. From the protracted hesitancies of photography’s origins, to conceptual and performative art that has emerged since the 1960s, to the waves of technological experimentation flourishing today, Albers foregrounds artists who offer fleeting, hidden, conditional, and future modes of visibility. By unveiling how ephemerality shapes the photographic experience, she ultimately proposes an expanded framework for the medium.
The Decisive Network
Regular price $49.95 Save $-49.95Since its founding in 1947, the legendary Magnum Photos agency has been telling its own story about photographers who were witnesses to history and artists on the hunt for decisive moments. Based on unprecedented archival research, The Decisive Network unravels Magnum’s mythologies to offer a new history of what it meant to shoot, edit, and sell news images after World War II.
Nadya Bair shows that between the 1940s and 1960s, Magnum expanded the human-interest story to global dimensions while bringing the aesthetic of news pictures into new markets. Working with a vast range of editorial and corporate clients, Magnum made photojournalism integral to postwar visual culture. But its photographers could not have done this alone. By unpacking the collaborative nature of photojournalism, this book shows how picture editors, sales agents, spouses, and publishers helped Magnum photographers succeed in their assignments and achieve fame. Bair concludes in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when changing market conditions led Magnum to consolidate its brand. In that moment, Magnum’s photojournalists became artists and their assignments oeuvres. Bridging art history, media studies, cultural history, and the history of communication, The Decisive Network transforms our understanding of the photographic profession and the global circulation of images in the predigital world.
Muybridge and Mobility
Regular price $27.95 Save $-27.95In 1878, Eadweard Muybridge successfully photographed horses in motion, proving that all four hooves leave the ground at once for a split second during full gallop. This was the beginning of Muybridge’s decades-long investigation into instantaneous photography, culminating in his masterpiece Animal Locomotion. Muybridge became one of the most influential photographers of his time, and his stop-motion technique helped pave the way for the motion-picture industry, born a short decade later.
Coauthored by cultural geographer Tim Cresswell and art historian John Ott, this book reexamines the motion studies as historical forms of “mobility,” in which specific forms of motion are given extraordinary significance and accrued value. Through a lively, interdisciplinary exchange, the authors explore how mobility is contextualized within the transformations of movement that marked the nineteenth century and how mobility represents the possibilities of social movement for African Americans. Together, these complementary essays look to Muybridge’s works as interventions in knowledge and experience and as opportunities to investigate larger social ramifications and possibilities.

Picturing Joy
Regular price $9.99 Save $-9.99For more than fifty years, photographer George Lange has been obsessed with connecting with the world through his work. Whether he was shooting a movie star or a family member, he saw his own search for joy reflected in the images.

He strove to re-create those fleeting sparks of childhood joy in his relationships and his photographs. “Each day I am trying to find the place we are all connected, but I never know where that place will be. I create spaces where my subjects feel safe and trusting and can share their part of their own joy.”
Picturing Joy: Stories of Connection is a lively guide to Lange’s approach to life as well as the highlights of his career. This optical and optimistic book captures his curiosity, energy, and enthusiasm for people and photography. It also distills wisdom gleaned from a lifelong search for quotidian beauty that might otherwise go unnoticed. Steve McCurry. Animals
Regular price $80.00 Save $-80.00In Animals, we discover a different side to the famed photographer who skillfully explores animals’ complex relationship with humans and the environment.
Tenderness abounds, particularly in scenes of unkempt street dogs sleeping contentedly next to a human. But there’s also a kind of essential solitude, with animals belonging to no one and simply wandering through life with only their survival instincts to guide them. We witness camels caught in the crossfire during the first Gulf War; a shepherd from Northern Pakistan tenderly feeding his goats; Beverly Hills designer dogs; race horses on a Hong Kong rooftop; elephants in Thailand, and more images selected by McCurry from his vast archives.
Through McCurry’s lens, we discover an appreciation for each creature’s beauty and silent dignity. This kaleidoscopic collection is at once a beautiful travelogue and a touching tribute to the creatures who share our planet.

Walter Chandoha. Cats. Photographs 1942–2018
Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00On a winter’s night in 1949 in New York City, young marketing student and budding photographer Walter Chandoha spotted a stray kitten in the snow, bundled it into his coat, and brought it home. Little did he know he had just met the muse that would determine the course of his life. Chandoha turned his lens on his new feline friend—which he named Loco—and was so inspired by the results that he started photographing kittens from a local shelter. These images marked the start of an extraordinary career that would span seven decades.
Long before the Internet and #catsofinstagram, Chandoha was enrapturing the public with his fuzzy subjects. From advertisements to greetings cards, jigsaw puzzles to pet-food packaging, his images combined a genuine affection for the creatures, a strong work ethic, and flawless technique. Chandoha’s trademark glamorous lighting, which made each cat’s fur stand out in sharp relief, would define the visual vocabulary of animal portraiture for generations and inspire such masters as Andy Warhol, who took cues from Chandoha’s charming portraits in his illustrated cat book.
Cats leaps into the archives of this genre-defining artist, spanning color studio and environmental portraits, black-and-white street photography, images from vintage cat shows, tender pictures that combine his children with cats and more. This is a fitting tribute not just to these beguiling creatures but also to a remarkable photographer who passed away in 2019 at the age of 98; and whose compassion can be felt in each and every frame.
Sebastião Salgado. La main de l'homme. Une archéologie de l'ère industrielle
Regular price $100.00 Save $-100.00Sebastião Salgado’s photo book classic Workers. An Archaeology of the Industrial Age (first published in 1993) pays tribute to the time-honored tradition of manual labor in the new millennium when machines and computers replace human workers throughout the globe. With images of striking beauty and integrity, Salgado composes a visual elegy for the working men and women, whose indomitable spirit has prevailed over the harshest of conditions to achieve a singular grace.
More than those of any other living photographer, Sebastião Salgado’s images of the world’s poor stand in tribute to the human condition. Salgado defines his work as “militant photography”, dedicated to “the best comprehension of human being”; over the decades he has bestowed great dignity on the most isolated and neglected among us — from famine-stricken refugees in the Sahel to the indigenous peoples of South America.
With Workers, Salgado brings us a global epic that transcends mere image making to become an affirmation of the enduring spirit of working men and women. In this volume, three hundred fifty duotone photographs form an archaeological perspective of the activities that have defined hard work from the Stone Age through the Industrial Revolution to the present. With images of the infernal landscape of an Indonesian sulfur mine, the drama of traditional Sicilian tuna fishing, and the staggering endurance of Brazilian gold miners, Salgado unearths layers of visual information to reveal the ceaseless human activity at the core of modern civilization.
Workers presents its subject on several interactive levels: Salgado’s introductory text, written in collaboration with Brazilian author Eric Nepomuceno, expands his passionate photographic iconography; extended captions, also written by Salgado, provide a historical and factual framework. Honoring the timeless and indomitable spirit of the manual laborer, Workers renders the human condition with honesty and respect.
Sebastião Salgado. Amazônia
Regular price $150.00 Save $-150.00Sebastião Salgado traveled the Brazilian Amazon and photographed the unparalleled beauty of this extraordinary region for six years: the forest, the rivers, the mountains, the people who live there—an irreplaceable treasure of humanity.
In the book’s foreword Salgado writes: “For me, it is the last frontier, a mysterious universe of its own, where the immense power of nature can be felt as nowhere else on earth. Here is a forest stretching to infinity that contains one-tenth of all living plant and animal species, the world’s largest single natural laboratory.”
Salgado visited a dozen indigenous tribes that exist in small communities scattered across the largest tropical rainforest in the world. He documented the daily life of the Yanomami, the Asháninka, the Yawanawá, the Suruwahá, the Zo’é, the Kuikuro, the Waurá, the Kamayurá, the Korubo, the Marubo, the Awá, and the Macuxi—their warm family bonds, their hunting and fishing, the manner in which they prepare and share meals, their marvelous talent for painting their faces and bodies, the significance of their shamans, and their dances and rituals.
Sebastião Salgado has dedicated this book to the indigenous peoples of Brazil’s Amazon region: “My wish, with all my heart, with all my energy, with all the passion I possess, is that in 50 years’ time this book will not resemble a record of a lost world. Amazônia must live on.”

Josef Heinrich Darchinger. Wirtschaftswunder
Regular price $60.00 Save $-60.00It was no more than eight years after the surrender of the Nazi government when Josef Heinrich Darchinger set out on his photographic journey through the West of a divided Germany. The bombs of World War II had reduced the country’s major cities to deserts of rubble. Yet his pictures show scarcely any signs of the downfall of a civilization. Not that the photographer was manipulating the evidence: he simply recorded what he saw. At the time, a New York travel agency was advertising the last opportunity to go and visit the remaining bomb sites. Darchinger’s pictures, in color and black-and-white, show a country in a fever of reconstruction. The economic boom was so incredible that the whole world spoke of an “economic miracle.” The people who achieved it, in contrast, look down-to-earth, unassuming, conscientious, and diligent. And increasingly, they look like strangers in the world they have created.
The photographs portray a country caught between the opposite poles of technological modernism and cultural restoration, between affluence and penury, between German Gemütlichkeit and the constant threat of the Cold War. They show the winners and losers of the “economic miracle,” people from all social classes, at home, at work, in their very limited free time and as consumers. But they also show a country that looks, in retrospect, like a film from the middle of the last century.
For this revised edition, we have digitally remastered all photographies in a new, full-frame format that captivate with their highly pigmented colors and fine press varnish.

It was a humdrum commission for the portraitist often credited with having perfected the photojournalistic movie still, but when he met the Belgian-born beauty, Willoughby was enraptured. “She took my hand like… well a princess, and dazzled me with that smile that God designed to melt mortal men’s hearts,” he recalled.
As Hepburn’s career soared following her Oscar-winning US debut in Roman Holiday, Willoughby became a trusted friend, framing her working and home life. His historic, perfectionist, tender photographs seek out the many facets of Hepburn’s beauty and elegance, as she progresses from her debut to her career high of My Fair Lady in 1963. Willoughby’s studies, showing her on set, preparing for a scene, interacting with actors and directors, and returning to her private life, comprise one of photography’s great platonic love affairs and an unrivalled record of one of the 20th century’s touchstone beauties.
Helmut Newton. Polaroids
Regular price $60.00 Save $-60.00Polaroids occupy a special place in the hearts of many photo enthusiasts who remember a time when “instant photography” meant one-of-a-kind prints that developed within minutes of clicking the shutter. What was once a crucial tool for photographers to test their shots before shooting on film has now become obsolete in the face of digital photography. Luckily for us, legendary photographer Helmut Newton saved his test Polaroids, allowing a privileged and rare chance to see the tests from a selection of his greatest shoots over a period of decades, including many from the TASCHEN titles SUMO, A Gun for Hire, and Work. Selected by his widow, June Newton, from over 300 photos featured at the 2011 exhibition “Helmut Newton Polaroids” at the Museum für Fotografie in Berlin, this collection captures the magic of Helmut Newton photo shoots as only Polaroids can.
Harry Benson: The Beatles
Regular price $2,000.00 Save $-2,000.00Behind Beatlemania
In early 1964, Harry Benson was getting on a plane for a foreign assignment in Africa, when he got a call from his photo editor of London newspaper The Daily Express. He was now going with the Beatles to Paris to document French Beatlemania and what followed was the biggest (ticket to) ride of his life.
Benson was warmly welcomed into the Beatles’ inner sanctum, resulting in some of the most intimate photographs ever taken of the band, then on the cusp of world domination. In Paris, he took the iconic photograph of the Fab Four having a pillow fight at the George V hotel; he shot their groundbreaking first visit to the United States, the full impact of New York hysteria, their famous appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, the band in Florida, including their surprising encounter with Cassius Clay; as well as on the set of A Hard Day’s Night. The relationship continued in 1966, including George’s honeymoon in Barbados and their notorious US tour, under the shadow cast by Lennon’s comment that the Beatles were “bigger than Jesus Christ.”
Benson’s luminous black and white photographs show at close quarters the Beatles composing, performing, encountering their fans, relaxing, and engaging with each other, while trying to cope with their increasingly isolating fame. As well as hundreds of photographs, many previously unseen, there is an introductory essay by Benson as well as quotes and newspaper clippings from the period.
