A debut collection of lyric poems interrogating the generational implications of the Great Migration to Northern California. 
Ankle-Deep in Pacific Water, a debut collection by E. Hughes, marries personal narrative with historical excavation to articulate the intricacies of Black familial love, life, and pain. Tracing the experiences of a southern Black family, their migration to the San Francisco Bay area, and the persistent anti-Blackness there (despite the state’s insistence that it is/was not involved in the US’ projects of imperialism or chattel slavery), Hughes illuminates the intersections of history, grief, and violence.
At the book’s heart is “The Accounts of Mammy Pleasant,” a persona poem written from the perspective of the formerly enslaved abolitionist and financier Mary Ellen Pleasant who is thought to have helped fund John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry. Alongside this historical account, Hughes deftly weaves in the story of a contemporary Black family navigating the generational trauma resulting from the Great Migration: domestic violence and racialized violence, familial love and loyalty, the work of parenting, and the work of being a child. Ankle-Deep in Pacific Water reveals in its pages that, while many things have changed over time, ultimately the question of what “freedom” meant and looked like for Black people in the early 20th century retains the same murkiness and contradictions for Black people today.

Perhaps the Bard's most influential romantic comedy is Much Ado About Nothing, the timeless tale of sworn enemies who become lovers. Countless pop-culture pairings owe a debt to the play, from Elizabeth and Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice to the leads in When Harry Met Sally and Something's Gotta Give.

Shakespeare's best-loved sonnet, "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day?", touches on the themes of unattainable love and mortality. The poem is part of Shakespeare's "Fair Youth" sequence of sonnets, which many historians believe are actually about a young man.

Für die Belange des Kommentars hat Martin West den apparatus criticus neu gestaltet und die wichtigsten Hinweise zur Textgestaltung im untenstehenden Abschnitt ‘Orthographisches’ (S. X–XVI) zusammengefaßt; der Testimonien-Apparat konnte hier entfallen. Einen Abriß der ÜberlieferungsGeschichte bietet das Kapitel ‘Zur Geschichte des Textes’ (GT) im ProlegomenaBand. – Eine typographische Besonderheit der vorliegenden Ausgabe stellt die Hervorhebung der direkten Reden durch Kursivsatz dar. Damit wird dem ‘Fokalisations’-Unterschied zwischen Erzähler-Text und Figuren-Sprache Rechnung getragen, dem im Kommentar besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt wird (s. dazu das Prolegomena-Kapitel ‘Homerische Poetik in Stichwörtern’ s.v. ‘Sekundäre Fokalisation’).

A primer for those with no previous knowledge of Chinese, this book introduces readers to the fundamentals of classical Chinese poetry through twenty-nine ways of understanding a single poem. “Seeing Off a Friend,” by the great Tang poet Li Bai (701–762) has long been praised for its vividness, subtlety, and poignancy. Ilse Aichingers Lyrik gehört eher zum postulierten als zum tatsächlichen literarischen Kanon: Knapp hundert der im Deutschen Literaturarchiv Marbach aufbewahrte Gedichte und Gedichtentwürfe sind noch unveröffentlicht, und für das mehrfach ausgezeichnete publizierte Werk fehlte bisher eine methodisch fundierte Überblicksstudie.

Evgeny Boratynsky and the Russian Golden Age is the first metrical and rhymed translation of nearly all the lyrics by Evgeny Boratynsky (1800–1844), one of the greatest poets of the Golden Age of Russian poetry. Also included is the translation of two narrative poems (Banqueting and Eda) and the most characteristic passages from The Gypsy and The Ball. Each work is followed by a full annotation, in which, in addition to the background necessary for the understanding of the work, one finds an analysis of its form. In many cases, the poems on similar themes by Pushkin, Lermontov, Tyutchev, Yazykov and some later poets are included. In its entirety, the commentary provides a glimpse into Boratynsky’s literary epoch, his ties with his environment (Russian, French and German) and the influence he exercised on later poets. A special feature of Evgeny Boratynsky and the Russian Golden Age is the translator’s strict adherence to the form of the original. Yanagawa Seigan (1789–1858) and his wife Kōran (1804–79) were two of the great poets of nineteenth-century Japan. They practiced the art of traditional Sinitic poetry—works written in literary Sinitic, or classical Chinese, a language of enduring importance far beyond China’s borders. Together, they led itinerant lives, traveling around Japan teaching poetry and selling calligraphy. With the support of his wife, Amy Jacques Garvey, he was able to publish, The Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey in 1925, and The Meditations of Marcus Garvey in 1927.

Beginning with the lines, “Lying and stealing is the white man’s game / For rights of God nor man he has no shame / (A practice of his throughout the whole world) / At all, great thunderbolts he has hurled,” Garvey penned “The Tragedy of White Injustice,” a cry for the people of the world to wake up to the atrocities of colonialism and racism. Described by Garvey as neither verse nor orthodox prose, “The Tragedy of White Injustice” as well as his other meditations, showcased his never-ending pursuit of worldwide Black independence and his everlasting Black pride even in the face of the harshest of circumstances.
