Western Sørkapp Land is a very remote and diverse region that is representative of the European Arctic. This book describes the transformation of the environment and landscape of Western Sørkapp Land based on research data collected by Jagiellonian University scientific expeditions in the period 1980-1986 and 2008. Western Sørkapp Land has been experiencing dramatic natural changes such as glacial recession, the emergence of new landforms, and quaternary deposits as well as changes in the water drainage and network due to global warming. The establishment of South Spitsbergen National Park has led to a regeneration of the local reindeer herd and consequently the overgrazing of the local tundra resulting in altered plant communities. The potential future transformations of Western Sørkapp Land are outlined in the book.

Rotifers (Rotifera) are animals which occur in every type of aquatic environment, both marine and freshwater. They owe their wide distribution to rapid reproduction. Due to their abundance, they play an important role in freshwater ecosystems. There are around 2000 rotifer species, 1350 of them from Europe. This book provides a guide to rotifers, including topics such as the origin of rotifers, taxonomy and systematics, morphology, anatomy, biology, ecology, zoogeography, and methods of sample collection, preservation, storage, and processing. It also provides information on orders, families and genera, as well as a survey of species, based on illustrations including many original color micrographs. In total, over 460 rotifer species found in Poland are presented and characterized, as well as over 140 species found in neighboring countries.

In addition to the issues constituting the basis of microbial biotechnology, such as microorganisms culturing or their use in industry and environmental protection, the book includes modern analytical techniques known as "omics", as well as digital techniques used to record adverse changes in the environment those resulting from the harmful activity of bacteria and fungi. A color atlas (Chapter 8) with photos of the fungi discussed in each chapter was also included. The book was prepared with the use of many years of scientific and didactic experience of the authors who conduct classes in various fields and specializations of natural sciences. This resulted in the interdisciplinary nature of the publication. It will be useful not only for PhD students and students of biotechnology and microbiology, but also environmental protection, ecological biotechnology, urban revitalization, as well as all those interested in applying the latest achievements of these areas of science in practice.
