The book has an introduction outlining the conceptual framework that gives meaning to the six collected texts that follow. This framework derives from the work of Pierre Bourdieu. He stated that ‘everything is social,’ which means that all discourses have to be understood in their own terms (as ‘structured structures’) and in relation to the social conditions in which they developed (‘structuring structures’). As social individuals we are constrained by the structures defining our situation but we also have the capacity to alter those structures. With particular reference to the ‘field’ of politics, the Introduction considers theoretically the nature of the ‘presentation of self’ (Goffman) of citizens and the nature of parliamentary democracy as ‘presentation’ or ‘representation’ (as discussed in Habermas: The structural transformation of the public sphere).

The six main chapters reproduce texts written or spoken about politics at intervals in the period from 1960 until 2020. Brief introductions to each chapter will contextualise these texts both in terms of their significance in my developing awareness of political discourse and also in terms of the historically changing nature of the field of politics itself in the United Kingdom. Having an a-political upbringing, the author suggests that he gradually acquired a political competence but, equally, developed the view that the domination of political discourse has become exclusive and that there is now a need to reassert social relations in society and to recognize the extent to which political activity sustains the social control of a privileged minority.

The book has an Epilogue which considers some recent arguments about ‘populism’ and also reflects on the extent to which the ‘new normal’ heralded by some for a post-Covid future has the capacity to circumscribe the influence of politics. The author reflects on whether deployment of Bourdieu’s concept of ‘symbolic violence’ - the process by which the attitudes of the few are imposed on the many – might lead to the possible resurgence of social movements which are sceptical about political power. The author suggests that there may be a need for a new ‘quietism’ as advanced by Fénelon in the court of Louis XIV at the end of the 17th century and as considered by Richard Rorty in “Naturalism and quietism” in Philosophy as Cultural Politics, 2007.

Explores play as a transgressive expression that disrupts the modern city

Insurgent Play: Social worlds of urban disruption explores play as a transgressive expression that counters the existing urban order (neoliberal, authoritarian, militarised). Insurgent play is disruptive, yet through disruption it brings social worlds into being, undergirds global subcultures and overcomes hostile urban environments characterised by ever-diminishing spaces for free expression. Acts of insurgent play are claims on space lasting from brief moments to years, animating patches of the city designed for commercial, industrial and logistical imperatives. Even in public spaces designed for leisure and play, insurgent play brings different expressions at different speeds, transgressing designated uses and bodily expectations. Through insurgent play people find belonging in the city, especially for those excluded from other spaces based on race, class, sexuality and citizenship. As such, stories of insurgent play are stories of alternative ways of inhabiting cities stemming from the widespread human desire and need for play, for joy and for sociality.
Insurgent Play draws upon examples from street skateboarding. Street skateboarding disrupts the city in the pursuit of play, enlivens patches of space through temporary claims, and initiates encounters with authorisers, property owners and citizens gravid with hostility with instants of wonder. Insurgence is a way of being, and the desire for insurgent play cannot be placated by better urban planning or formal expertise. Nor will multiplying designated play spaces, creative precincts and ‘flexible’ public spaces stop people seeking out space to create their own worlds of disruption.
The book makes four arguments. First, insurgent play is bodily expression that can challenge, disrupt and transgresses dominant ways of city-making. Second, insurgent play takes us to parts of the urban landscape that we might not otherwise go, politics we might not otherwise recognise and encounters we might otherwise overlook. Third, claims on the city made through insurgent play enliven urban space through transformative power. In this way, these claims territorialise patches of the built environment intended for other uses. Last, insurgent play space is generated from below, never above. Insurgent play shapes, and is shaped by, identities that position adherents in opposition to prevailing urban orders.

‘Panic buying’ at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic generated enduring media images of empty supermarket shelves and calls for food rationing. The fragility of the 'just-in-time' food system was seemingly exposed yet, as the pandemic progressed in the UK, there were remarkably few food shortages. This book reveals the changing patterns of food provision in the UK during that period, looking at how diets changed and how retail, processing, distribution and production businesses adapted. But beneath the apparent logistical success story, there were injustices as the more vulnerable struggled to access good quality food and some businesses received inadequate help.

The authors consider the winners and losers in a time of rapid social change, the lasting impacts on the UK food system and lessons to be learned for a food system dependent on imports and large retailers and with a high burden of diet-related health issues.

Visit the website for the Apollo Theater, and you'll notice acknowledgments to corporations like Coca Cola and Citibank. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, owe their very existence to large corporate donations from companies like General Motors. And while we can easily make sense of the need for such funding to keep cultural spaces afloat, less obvious are the reasons that corporations give to them. In Black Culture, Inc., Patricia A. Banks interrogates the notion that such giving is completely altruistic, and argues for a deeper understanding of the hidden transactions being conducted that render corporate America dependent on Black culture.

Drawing on a range of sources, such as public relations and advertising texts on corporate cultural patronage and observations at sponsored cultural events, Banks argues that Black cultural patronage profits firms by signaling that they value diversity, equity, and inclusion. By functioning in this manner, support of Black cultural initiatives affords these companies something called "diversity capital," an increasingly valuable commodity in today's business landscape. While this does not necessarily detract from the social good that cultural patronage does, it reveals its secret cost: ethnic community support may serve to obscure an otherwise poor track record with social justice.

Banks deftly weaves innovative theory with detailed observations and a discerning critical gaze at the various agendas infiltrating memorials, museums, and music festivals meant to celebrate Black culture. At a time when accusations of discriminatory practices are met with immediate legal and social condemnation, the insights offered here are urgent and necessary.

During the cost-of-living crisis, schools and nurseries have had to step beyond their educational purpose to offer free food to families through food banks. This book explores how these food banks operate, why families use them and how they affect children’s participation and wellbeing. Drawing on case studies of 12 primary schools and early years settings across England, it examines the impact on family wellbeing, home-school relationships and staff.

The authors argue that the situation will remain unsustainable if this welfare work continues to be unfunded and unrecognised, raising a significant question of who should and who can be responsible for alleviating child poverty.

Paternal, patriarchal, and fraternal concepts, metaphors, and images have long dominated thinking about politics. But the political, Gil Anidjar argues, has always been maternal.

In a series of finely woven meditations on slavery, sovereignty, and the social contract, this book places mothers and mothering at the crux of political thought. Anidjar identifies a maternal sovereignty and a maternal contract, showing that without motherhood, there could be no constitution, preservation, or reproduction of collective existence in time. En 1994, Sue Rodriguez se suicide avec l’aide d’un médecin après une intense bataille judiciaire en Cour suprême du Canada dont l’objet était la décriminalisation du suicide assisté. À la suite de ce suicide, aucune accusation criminelle ne fut portée contre la ou les personnes ayant présumément aidé Sue Rodrigues à mettre fin à ses jours, et ce malgré le fait que le suicide assisté est un acte criminel au Canada. Cette non-intervention du droit pénal est examinée en fonction du rôle que l’affaire Rodriguez a pu jouer dans la transformation des moralités au Canada. Dans ce livre, le suicide assisté de Sue Rodriguez est envisagé comme un « crime » utile (au sens durkheimien du terme), car il met en évidence une inconsistance entre les moralités dominantes inscrites dans le droit pénal et les conditions sociales qui ont rendu ce « crime » possible. Apparenté au crime de Socrate, le « crime » de Sue Rodriguez est analysé comme un héraut annonciateur de nouvelles moralités, comme un prélude préparant directement la voie à des changements dans le poids accordé aux moralités dominantes. Dans ce contexte, le rôle du droit pénal comme mode privilégié de régulation morale est remis en question.

Over the past decade, a wave of Chinese international undergraduate students—mostly self-funded—has swept across American higher education. From 2005 to 2015, undergraduate enrollment from China rose from under 10,000 to over 135,000. This privileged yet diverse group of young people from a changing China must navigate the complications and confusions of their formative years while bridging the two most powerful countries in the world. How do these students come to study in the United States? What does this experience mean to them? What does American higher education need to know and do in order to continue attracting these students and to provide sufficient support for them?

In Ambitious and Anxious, the sociologist Yingyi Ma offers a multifaceted analysis of this new wave of Chinese students based on research in both Chinese high schools and American higher-education institutions. Ma argues that these students’ experiences embody the duality of ambition and anxiety that arises from transformative social changes in China. These students and their families have the ambition to navigate two very different educational systems and societies. Yet the intricacy and pressure of these systems generate a great deal of anxiety, from applying to colleges before arriving, to studying and socializing on campus, and to looking ahead upon graduation. Ambitious and Anxious also considers policy implications for American colleges and universities, including recruitment, student experiences, faculty support, and career services.

Les trajectoires familiales et professionnelles suivies par les femmes gestionnaires sont multiples. Plusieurs d’entre elles ont dû subir les effets préjudiciables des rapports sociaux de sexe. Certaines ont su recueillir l’héritage culturel de leur mère, et la plupart ont tenu à faire des études poussées et voulu se ménager une vie personnelle moins contraignante en termes de responsabilités familiales et conjugales. Elles ont par ailleurs bénéficié d’une conjoncture socio-politique favorable à l’avancement des femmes : création de programmes d’équité en matière d’emploi, scolarisation en masse, présence croissante des femmes dans la fonction publique et l’entreprise privée. Francophonies d’Amérique propose dans ce numéro un ensemble de textes de la première Biennale Amérique de la langue française qui a eu lieu à l’Université de Moncton sous le thème La langue française en Amérique : dynamiques spatiales et identitaires. La langue française en Amérique est une aventure imprévisible qui se vit au-delà des pronostics, au-delà des théories issues d’un vécu majoritaire, au-delà d’un déjà-vu. En 1912 avait lieu à l’Université Laval le premier congrès de la langue française en Amérique et le thème était alors Le français au Québec : un trésor à découvrir. Près d’un siècle plus tard, le temps de la découverte du trésor est résolument passé pour faire place à un temps de la conscience du savoir, du savoir qui explore et s’interroge sur la langue française en Amérique qui se vit dans la diversité et dans l’adversité. Cette réalité commune à tout francophone d’Amérique est au centre de ce numéro, qui aborde les questions névralgiques, s’il en est, de l’espace et de l’identité. Cette biennale a été organisée par l’Institut canadien de recherche sur les minorités linguistiques.

This work argues that a component part of US neoliberalism involves adaptive accumulation, a process in which capital seeks to enlarge public programs, as a means to reroute public revenues into private revenue streams. Francophonies d’Amérique propose dans ce numéro, intitulé Les mots du marché: l’inscription de la francophonie canadienne dans la nouvelle économie, un ensemble de textes résultant de travaux de recherche menés en équipe sur les nouveaux défis auxquels les communautés francophones doivent faire face. Le poids démographique de la francophonie canadienne est en continuel déclin, mais ce fait ne constitue certes qu’un aspect de la réalité. Pour évaluer la pertinence et l’impact de ces politiques, Marie France Labrecque prend en exemple une région andine de la Colombie, La Cocha. À l’aide d’une méthodologie d’anthropologie socioculturelle, elle démontre que les changements sociaux les plus importants ne s’effectuent pas seulement dans les rapports entre hommes et femmes mais aussi entre les générations. L’auteure procède à une analyse minutieuse de la division du travail dans les activités principales auxquelles se livrent les hommes, les femmes, les adultes et les enfants. Elle présente aussi les trajectoires individuelles de femmes appartenant à différentes générations et décrit leur niveau d’insertion dans le travail et dans le développement. Enfin, elle se penche sur les organisations communautaires, leur implication dans la région pour tenter d’évaluer leur influence sur le changement des structures sociales, de la vie quotidienne tant pour les individus que pour la collectivité.

Un tel collectif sur la santé, résultat du travail de l’ICRML, est une véritable mise en chantier de la recherche dans un domaine de pointe où, en ce qui concerne les francophonies minoritaires au Canada, tout ne fait que commencer. Nous espérons que les recommandations qui y sont faites donneront lieu, bien au-delà de ces pages, à des politiques publiques concrètes et durables. La violence et la peur font tellement partie de nos vies que, parfois, elles se confondent avec elles. Elles s’insinuent aussi bien dans le social que dans l’individuel et déterminent l’histoire de l’un et de l’autre. Le crime, quant à lui, semble d’être devenu un acte privilégié non seulement pour dire la violence, mais aussi pour vivre la peur. Le criminel, à cet égard, a parfois pour fonction de permettre de défini son contraire, l’individu de bonne réputation. L’époque actuelle favorise un individualisme d’un genre nouveau : la personne menacée de toutes parts tente de se protéger en démonisant un groupe particulier. Heureusement, le monde d’aujourd’hui produit aussi des individus qui, du fait de l’affaissement des valeurs anciennes, se montrent plus tolérants à l’égard des autres.

Cette acceptation d’autrui fait obstacles à certaines formes de violence et favorise la non-violence. Le présent ouvrage nous conduit à examiner quels sens revêtent la violence, la peur et le crime et quels sont leurs rapports mutuels. Il s’adresse à tous ceux qui s’intéressent à la justice pénale et sociale. Il fait ressortir certains problèmes et indique certains moyens permettant de résoudre les conflits, y compris ceux vécus par l’exclu. Il touche les pratiques sociales et les personnes appelées à les gérer, à assurer la sécurité et à éliminer la peur. Die Verhaltensgenetik blickt auf eine gut replizierte Studienlage. Daher wird es zunehmend schwerer, sie in den Sozialwissenschaften zu ignorieren und gleichzeitig den Anspruch zu erheben, kausale Muster der Entstehung und Reproduktion sozialer Ungleichheit zu identifizieren. Der erste von zwei Teilen dieses Lehrbuchs gibt einen einleitenden, aber kritischen Überblick über die zentralen Ideen, analytischen Mechanismen und methodologischen Ansätze der Verhaltensgenetik. Dieser Teil schließt mit dem Kontrast zwischen dem soziologischen und dem verhaltensgenetischen Ansatz der Erklärung intergenerationaler Vererbung innerhalb von Familien. Im zweiten Teil nimmt die Darstellung des „interaktionistischen Konsenses", also der Idee, dass Unterschiede im menschlichen Verhalten immer durch Gene und Umwelt im Zusammenspiel entstehen, eine zentrale Rolle ein. Dafür werden die Konzepte der Gen-Umwelt-Korrelationen und der Gen-Umwelt-Interaktionen eingeführt und für soziologische Inhalte diskutiert und empirisch aufgearbeitet. Il peut paraître étonnant d’évoquer la notion de liberté en matière d’apprentissage. Celle-ci ne fait-elle pas partie intégrante de nos systèmes de valeurs ? Si la fin du XIXe siècle a été témoin de la lutte des femmes pour l’accès à l’éducation, le XXIe siècle s’annonce comme celui où les notions de pluralité, de diversité et d’accroissement continu occuperont la première place. Liberté d’apprendre, certes, mais de quelle manière ? La recherche sur les femmes en milieu universitaire montre que leur expérience est parfois aliénante. Dans cet ouvrage, Jeannine M. Ouellette révèle que le malaise vient de ce que l’apprentissage est détaché de la vie d’apprenante. Ainsi, le « autrement » se rapporte à l’intégration de l’expérience des femmes dans le projet d’apprentissage.

La « liberté » devrait être celle de rechercher dans le milieu d’apprentissage les moyens de mettre au jour les connaissances qui proviennent de l’expérience des femmes. Les personnes en situation de formation feraient leur profit d’une démarche qui reconnaîtrait leur contribution personnelle. Pour bien des femmes, il est particulièrement utile de mettre leur expérience en rapport avec les connaissances transmises, car les réalités qu’elles vivent sont parfois occultées par un système axé sur des préoccupations essentiellement masculines. Tenant compte du développement du moi, de la parole et de la pensée des femmes, l’auteure plaide en faveur d’une méthodologie de l’enseignement qui peut rendre l’expérience universitaire plus satisfaisante pour les femmes, d’une part, et soutenir leur démarche de croissance personnelle, d’autre part.

With the new geological age known as the Anthropocene heralding dramatic disruptions in the earth system, geopolitics needs to be fundamentally reconsidered to deal with these new circumstances. Planetary boundaries and ecological change are now the key contextualization for considering future global political arrangements.

We now find ourselves in a new geological age: the Anthropocene. The climate is changing and species are disappearing at a rate not seen since Earth’s major extinctions. The rapid, large-scale changes caused by fossil-fuel powered globalization increasingly threaten societies in new, unforeseen ways. But most security policies continue to be built on notions that look backward to a time when geopolitical threats derived mainly from the rivalries of states with fixed boundaries. Instead, Anthropocene Geopolitics shows that security policy must look forward to quickly shape a sustainable world no longer dependent on fossil fuels.

A future of long-term peace and geopolitical security depends on keeping the earth in conditions roughly similar to those we have known throughout history. Minimizing disruptions that would further put civilization at risk of extinction urgently requires policies that reflect new Anthropocene “planetary boundaries.”

André Vachet a donné son dernier cours au Département de science politique de l’Université d’Ottawa en 2000. Au total, il aura donc enseigné à l’université pendant près de quarante ans : trois ans à l’Université de Sudbury et à l’Université Laurentienne (de 1959 à 1962) et trente-six ans à l’Université d’Ottawa (de 1964 à 1999). Il est difficile de faire saisir en quelques mots l’impact qu’a eu André Vachet à l’Université d’Ottawa et au Département de science politique en particulier pendant toutes ces années. André Vachet a marqué par son enseignement plusieurs générations d’étudiants. Auteur d’un ouvrage considéré comme un classique de l’analyse de idéologies et de la pensée politique, L’idéologie libérale, André Vachet a également été très actif dans des associations professionnelles telles que le Conseil canadien de recherche en sciences sociales, la Fédération canadienne des science sociales, l’Association internationale de science politique, l’Association canadienne de science politique, qui ont pris leur essor au cours des années 1960 et 1970 et ont accompagné la naissance et le développement des sciences sociales dans les universités canadiennes.

En un mot, André Vachet a été un universitaire complet. Nous aimons à penser qu’à travers les textes ici réunis — témoignages et études que son travail à inspirés plus ou moins directement suivant les cas —, le lecteur saisisse en André Vachet le critique social, l’ennemi des dogmatismes, le partisan de la nuance et l’homme animé, un tantinet, par un esprit de contradiction qui l’amène à questionner inlassablement son interlocuteur.

Now brought back to life by a master storyteller, this is a story of a place and its people, steeped in politics and history, that reshaped the United States.

Thinking Systematics (TSS) is conceived as a “toolkit for the mind” — designed to improve how we think about the world, analyze information and pursue our goals.
