The benchtop design and the tail vise are the key features of this workbench by Chris Gochnour. The top is beefy where it needs to be: along the back and front edges. It has a thick back apron, and a front section made up of a thick apron and an equally thick benchdog board. The top of the tail vise sits flush with the benchtop, so the dog holes in the vise can be placed very close to the front edge of the bench. This design makes for the most efficient use of dog holes when planing workpieces of all sizes.

Careful wood choices enhance the design of this bookcase by Mike Korsak. He chose to pair beautifully figured maple with a bubinga base.  The shelves are joined to the sides with sliding dovetails, and half-blind dovetails join the sides to the bottom. The aprons and feet are curved, and the feet pack a lot of curves and challenging joinery such as gunstock miters into a small space. A cove molding adds a final bit of elegance to the top.

The design of this bed has many of the details of a traditional Arts and Crafts piece, with one notable exception. The simple lines, tapering legs, and through-joinery evoke the traditional style, but the use of veneers on the headboard and footboard adds a contemporary twist. The bed still appears to be made of solid wood, but the veneered plywood panels offer protection from wood movement and allow for perfect grain-matching and color-matching. This is also an economical way to use claro walnut.

A tool case is a staple project for students in North Bennet Street School's furniture-making program, and this design by Matt Wajda incorporates many woodworking fundamentals. The case and its drawers are joined with hand-cut dovetails; the case dividers are built with mortise-and-tenon joints; the door is frame-and-panel construction. As you make the chest, you'll build dovetailed drawers and fit them perfectly, add hardware, and more.

This table has a round top that pivots on two pins so it can be brought vertical and stored against a wall. Commonly known as a wine-tasting table, this design was inspired by a piece from the late 1700s, but Will Myers gave it some modern touches—a larger top, a more modern shape to the feet—and used cherry instead of the traditional pine. Construction is not difficult, and it can be made from hand tools if you desire.

When Jeff Miller built a small bench to test two new vises from BenchCrafted, little did he realize that he would love the vises so much, he’d soon build a full-size bench to live up to their potential. Both the leg vise and wagon vise hold more securely and are easier to adjust than any other vises he has used. So to showcase these powerhouses, he built this modified Roubo bench with a beefy base, a heavy top, and blocky legs flush to the front edge of the benchtop.
