Maserati 250F In Focus
Regular price $18.99 Save $-18.99Competing throughout the 2500cc Grand Prix Formula years of 1954-60, the Maserati 250F is one of the most famous and iconic racing cars ever built. Maserati 250F In Focus is one of the most detailed accounts ever written about a single model, and this superbly illustrated book features photographs by Tom March, one of the 1950s leading motor racing photographers, along with historic engine cutaways, chassis drawings, and technical descriptions of the 250F's evolution and development.
Anthony Pritchard's lively and informative text includes reminiscences from some of the leading drivers of the day, including Sir Stirling Moss, Juan Fangio, and Mike Hawthorn - drivers who raced these historic machines during the halycon days when Maserati battled with Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Vanwall for Grand Prix supremacy.
From the 1954 Argentine Grand Prix, to the 1960 US Grand Prix, a record of the chassis and race numbers of every 250F to have competed during this period is presented, along with detailed race histories and results, completing this most comprehensive and authoritative of books on Maserati's racing legend.
The book of the classic MV Agusta Fours
Regular price $18.99 Save $-18.99MV Agusta's classic four-cylinder dominated Grand Prix racing for a decade from 1956. When it was replaced by the new triple in 1966, Count Agusta decided to make the Four available in limited numbers as a production bike. To prevent privateers converting it into a Grand Prix racer that might embarrass the factory, he stipulated it should be 600cc and have shaft final drive. The touring 600 eventually evolved into the 750 Sport and GT, and finally the America, but MV Fours were always built in extremely small numbers. As befits an engine that handed multiple World Championships to John Surtees, Gary Hocking, and Mike Hailwood, the technical specification was staggering, and remains so to this day. This magnificent engine was always at the heart of the MV Agusta, and it was this engine that created and sustained the legend.
One of the world's foremost motorcycle historians, Ian Falloon is the author of several books on motorcycles, and has spent many years as a regular contributor to a number of motorcycle magazines worldwide, specialising in Italian marques, particularly Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Laverda, and, of course, MV Agusta.
Preston Tucker & Others
Regular price $11.99 Save $-11.99Can you imagine a world where people drive beautiful and unusual cars, created by designers prodigiously endowed with talent and imagination?
Names like Preston Tucker, Carl Borgward and John DeLorean are hardly known today. Nevertheless, today's cars would be a lot different without their contributions to automotive engineering. Although the car is a technological and rational affair, it's the dreamers and eccentrics like these who have made the biggest contribution to the development of the industry; those who have had the ability to think beyond their time and conventions. Money doesn't drive progress in the car business - it is a passion for speed, and an obsession with mechanisms. Yet for many a dreamer, this passion has ended in fiasco. Misunderstood and pushed aside by their contemporaries, they have been forced to watch their dreams trampled underfoot.
This book takes a look at the history of the car from a different angle, avoiding the mainstream moguls and telling a story about a man and his dream, and the like-minded people that came before and after him. Lavishly illustrated and intensively researched, it documents the making of some of the strangest and greatest cars of the past century. The main section is devoted to the unsung heroes of motoring, and the rest of the book shines a light on the many ingenious inventions we now take for granted.
Let's show some respect to the dreamers. Our world wouldn't be so exciting without them.

The Triumph Bonneville Bible (59-88)
Regular price $18.99 Save $-18.99This is a meticulously detailed history of the Triumph Bonneville: its antecedents, how it came about, and year-by-year production changes, with detailed technical specifications and contemporary road test reports showing how the Bonneville compared with its rivals. However, the history of the bike cannot be separated from the turbulent story of the company that built it. Triumph went from huge successes in the 1960s, when the Bonneville conquered North America, to troubled times in the early 1970s, leading to the formation of the workers co-operative that heroically kept the Bonneville alive for a further nine years. All this is covered here, plus details on how Triumph spares producer Les Harris took over production into the late '80s.
Unlike other Bonneville books, this one also tells you how to buy one of these iconic bikes secondhand - all the pitfalls, what to look for, and what they are really like to live with. Whichever one you choose, it should be fast, agile and good looking ... on a twisty country road, there's nothing like a Bonnie, and with information on clubs, websites, spares, and the latest modifications and upgrades, this book will help you get the one you deserve.
Featuring comprehensive appendices of facts, figures, contacts, technical specifiations (including correct colours for each year), engine/frame numbers, and road test performance figures, this is the definitive book of a bike that truly deserves the term 'practical classic.'

An Incredible Journey
Regular price $9.99 Save $-9.99In May 1935, 22-year-old Max Reisch and 19-year-old Helmuth Hahmann set out in a small motor car to find a land route from India to China. Their journey across Asia took them from Haifa to Tokyo.
In this lively account, the author regales us with one story after another, struck with wonder or struggling against disaster in countries which deeply concern us today: Iraq with its oilfields, ancient Iran in the throes of modernisation, proud Afghanistan, and British India with its stunning variety of civilisation.
Before the building of the Burma Road, driving from India to southern China meant sinking over the axles in mud on forest tracks and crossing torrents on rickety ferryboats. It also meant encounters with strange and fascinating peoples and places. With war already on the horizon, Reisch and Hahmann completed their round-the-world trip via Japan and the United States, arriving back in Vienna in December 1936.
Originally written by Max Reisch in German, this brand new English translation by Alison Falls captures all the excitement of the journey, and features fascinating historical photos of the journey from the Reisch archives.

Triumph Speed Twin & Thunderbird Bible
Regular price $11.99 Save $-11.99Here is the definitive history of Triumph's hugely popular Speed Twin and Thunderbird models.
Much more than simply a history, this book is the ultimate single source of detailed information for owners and would-be owners of these classic Triumph twins: in fact, it is the Speed Twin and Thunderbird Bible.
Between these covers will be found the year-on-year development history from 1938 to 1966, engine and frame numbers, model type identification, colour schemes, complete technical specifications of every model, and details of international sporting achievements. Additionally, factory photographs show each model in authentic original detail.
Ideally qualified to research and write this work, Harry Woolridge spent 30 years at Triumph's famous Meriden factory, and has owned almost every Triumph from Teriier 150cc to Trident 750cc as well as a few pre-war models. Also the author of a highly regarded work in the Trophy models, Harry Woolridge knows Triumph motorcycles inside out.
Triumph Cars - The Complete Story
Regular price $18.99 Save $-18.99Relating the story of Triumph cars is complex enough, but to include all the earlier events which persuaded Siegfried Bettman to begin car manufacture in 1923 is even more so.
The two authors, however - both of them experts in all things Triumph, the cars, and the political events surrounding them - have assembled and presented an enthralling story of the way the car-making side of the business came to prosper, was then afflicted by financial problems, and then rescued from oblivion by Standard in 1944.
Thereafter, Triumph once again became a prominent marque, eventually dominated Standard, and (from the 1960s onwards) became an important cast member in the melodramatic events which involved Leyland, BMC and eventually British Leyland.
This, however, is not merely a turbulent trawl through the historical record, for both authors were also successful in locating the important characters whose efforts made it possible for Triumph to excite the world. Along the way, the career of cars as famous as the Glorias and Dolomites of the 1930s, the Heralds, Spitfires and TRs of the post-war years, and the headline-grabbing exploits in racing and rallying build up a story which no fictional writer could have created.

The Book of the Ducati 750 SS ‘round-case’ 1974
Regular price $18.99 Save $-18.99Although manufactured for only one year - 1974 - the Ducati 750 Super Sport was immediately touted as a future classic. It was a pioneering motorcycle - expensive and rare, and produced by Ducati's race department to celebrate victory in the 1972 Imola 200 Formula 750 race.
Much of the mystique centred on the 750 SS is a result of this rarity and uniqueness. The 750 round-case Ducati engine was produced for only four years, and was discontinued primarily because it was extremely expensive to manufacture. Only one variant of the 750 was fitted with desmodromic valve gear - the Super Sport. It was also the only Ducati ever hand-assembled in the race shop with special engine components.
Although built in small numbers (401), this motorcycle is hailed as the ancestor of Ducati's current World Championship Desmosedici. As a result, the 750 SS has become extremely valuable and desirable, fetching prices beyond the most expensive contemporary Ducati; for Ducatisti, the 750 SS is the Holy Grail.
One of the world's foremost motorcycle historians, Ian Falloon is the author of many books on motorcycles, of which several are on Ducati, including the best-selling Ducati Story, and Ducati Twins Restoration Guide. He has owned a number of Ducati 750s since 1973 and has a particular enthusiasm for this model, still owning the 750 Super Sport he bought back in the 1970s.
Velocette
Regular price $18.99 Save $-18.99The Veloce company is well regarded for producing some of the best single-cylinder motorcycles in race form and for private use. It is not so well known that Veloce Ltd also produced some twin-cylinder machines: the Roarer, for racing, and the Model O for production. These bikes had many engineering features in common, such as twin contra-rotating crankshafts, inline cranks, shaft drive, and swing arm rear suspension. The supercharged Roarer was never raced because of the advent of war; this also put paid to the development of the Model O, which would have been the first so-called ‘Superbike.’
After the war, the Goodman family, which owned Veloce Ltd, focused on the production of a ‘Motorcycle for Everyman’: an idea that had featured in the company’s production bikes since its formation. Ideas embodied in the Roarer and the Model O were drawn on to produce the twin-cylinder LE range of motorcycles; these, however, were not well received by the motorcycling public, and many blame the production of the LE for the eventual demise of the company.
The purpose of the book is to present, from an engineering perspective, an analysis of the Roarer and the Model O, comparing and contrasting the methods adopted by their designers to meet the different design specifications of these bikes, and to illustrate how the ideas developed in this exercise appeared in the LE range of motorcycles.
The authors, Brian Agnew and Ivan Rhodes, met in the 1960s when Brian worked at Rolls-Royce Derby. They spent their weekends tinkering with motorcycles, and both have an intimate knowledge of the Velocette twins both from their time spent together and from their personal projects.

the little book of smart
Regular price $3.99 Save $-3.99Brand new chapter brings this book right up-to-date for 2009
What started off as an idea from Swiss watchmaker Swatch eventually evolved into the successful launch of the smart brand, now an integral part of the Mercedes-Benz family and - in its first ten years - achieving sales of more than three quarters of a million cars around the world. It hasn't all been plain sailing for smart, though. Well publicised financial woes, the launch of at least one inappropriate model range and the subsequent rationalisation of the entire product line-up meant plenty of problems along the way. But throughout it all, fans of the smart concept remained loyal to the brand and sales of the fortwo city car continued to prosper. These days, the future looks rosier. An all-new fortwo model range was launched in 2007, along with the announcement of the long-awaited debut of the smart brand into the American market for 2008. The latest model is more sophisticated and more in tune with today's buyers' tastes, while losing none of the inventiveness, practicality and sheer chic appeal of its predecessors. In the little book of smart, author and smart fanatic Paul Jackson guides us through the entire history of the brand, its highs and lows, its successes and failures, and on to today - with the very latest fortwo line-up promising major sales worldwide and, of course, helping to pave the way for a future for smart in the USA. It's a fascinating tale, told succinctly and in an entertaining style, and complemented by full colour photography throughout. 144 pages packed with 112 colour pictures and entertaining text make this a great little book.

The Buyer's Guide carefully charts all the models that an enthusiast just has to own, from the iconic late model MkI with its pocket rocket 1.8-litre engine and 5-speed box, through to the exclusive, extremely powerful and much sought after limited edition Rallye Golf.
With both mileage and particularly condition having a marked affect on potential prices, the authors give sound advice on what is worth restoring and what, however tempting, is likely to cost a new owner an un-recoupable fortune.
Weak points, rust traps, and potential mechanical defects are laid out for the reader, with clear Golf-specific guidelines offered on the practicalities of rectifying such problems. TRIUMPH TR - TR2 to 6: The last of the traditional sports cars
Regular price $18.99 Save $-18.99The Triumph TR range is amongst the most popular of classic British sports cars on both sides of the Atlantic. "TRIUMPH TR - TR2 to 6: The last of the traditional sports cars", as the title suggests, covers the cars from the basic four-cylinder TR2 introduced in 1953 to the hairy-chested six-cylinder TR6 that finally bowed out of production in 1975, to be replaced by the unloved TR7.
The previous edition of this popular book was well received, and had the following five star review published on Amazon.com:
"You can't go wrong buying a book from this author. I admit, I am a junkie for little British car books and this guy is up there with the other experts like Terry Horler on MG Midgets and Clausager on MGB's and Austin Healeys. Bill Piggott also has a book out on big Healeys ... A lot about Triumph TR and it's racing heritage is covered in this book and more pages devoted to the early TR's (2 and 3) than the six. Still, a very good read with lots of pictures ... from early dealer brochures to rally shots from across the pond. If you own a TR, you will want this book." (Written by Dennis Silance)

the little book of microcars
Regular price $3.99 Save $-3.99After the Second World War Europe was in economic crisis and manufacturing lay in ruins. Materials were in short supply, and factories were forbidden from building aircraft. There was a need for cheap, economical transport, but acquiring a new car was difficult, and secondhand cars were not as readily available as they are today.
By the 1950s, a myriad of economy cars had appeared on the market to fill this vacuum. Former aircraft companies - and even a refrigerator manufacturer - turned their hand to producing tiny cars that were often quirky and eccentric. Many of these little cars earned the nickname 'bubblecars' due to their bulbous shape.
The 1960s brought with it new levels of affluence, and these microcars almost faded from view. But today, they are enjoying a resurgence of popularity, with many becoming highly-prized collectors items. Increased traffic levels and fuel prices, and a greater awareness of environmental issues, have also created demand for a new generation of microcars, and car makers have responded accordingly with exciting new designs.
Illustrated with over 70 colour photographs, this book celebrates the best of these weird and wonderful motoring marvels.

How to restore Honda CX500 & CX650
Regular price $18.99 Save $-18.99When Honda released the CX500, the sales brochure stated 'First into the Future,' and described the bike as a road sports V-twin. Honda's first venture into the V-twin engine market, with water cooling and shaft drive, was certainly different from their previous twin- and four-cylinder models. Known for its good handling and fuel economy, the low maintenance Honda was comfortable, loved by tourers and couriers alike and, after overcoming early teething troubles, developed a reputation for reliability. Sportier models incorporating turbochargers were also released, for those looking for an additional adrenaline rush. After thirty years, there's now a resurgence of interest in the CX models, both from restorers and custom builders, with aftermarket cafe racer kits available, too.
The techniques, tips and tricks used by an experienced restorer will save you time and money. You'll see that you don't need expert knowledge or a fully fitted workshop for a restoration project. Packed full with photographs and detailed instructions, this book is your perfect guide, from start to finish.

Transport Revolutions
Regular price $26.99 Save $-26.99Modern societies rely upon prodigious amounts of oil for transport activity. The impacts over the near term of increasing oil scarcity and higher prices on transport will be among the major challenges facing humanity and will require a revolution in thinking about how we move people and goods.
Transport Revolutions analyzes five prior episodes of rapid and radical change in the way people and goods travel. It examines the worldwide state of transport today, especially its energy use and impacts, positive and negative. The authors then show how ample movement of people and freight could be sustained beyond 2025 with much-reduced dependence on oil, focusing on the United States and China. Preparations for the end of cheap oil include:
- Substantial use of electricity for land transport, particularly through direct powering of vehicles
- Use of wind to power water transport
- Radical changes in aviation
- Restructuring how transport is financed and managed
Written for transport professionals, those with a business interest in transport, and planners and policymakers, this book will appeal to anyone with an interest in how transport will evolve in the years ahead.
