The wise advice addressed to his disciple Lucilius has a validity that transcends the boundaries of time. Seneca talks to us about the convenience of a balanced relationship with nature, about the importance of the things we do daily, how to lead a healthy and honest life, what is licit and what is not, what enriches and impoverishes us, what is good and what is bad without falling into Manichaeism, about the importance and cultivation of friendship... In short, on how to learn to live, love and die.

„Glücklich ist also ein Leben, das seinem eigentlichen Wesen entspricht, uns aber nur gelingen kann, wenn der Geist gesund ist und seine Gesundheit dauerhaft behält, wenn er stark und zupackend und dann auch auf schönste Weise empfindsam ist und allen Situationen gerecht wird, wenn er auf seinen Leib und auf alles, was mit diesem zu tun hat, achtet, dies aber ohne Angst, und wenn er dann alle anderen Dinge, die das Leben bereichern, im Auge behält, ohne jedoch irgendetwas besonders zu bevorzugen, und die Gaben des Schicksals bewusst gebraucht, ohne sich ihnen zu unterwerfen.“ Seneca Für ein glückliches Leben gibt es nach Seneca (4-65 n. Chr.) nur eine Voraussetzung: die Fähigkeit und Bereitschaft, das Gute zu tun. Als einziges wirkliches Übel gelten ihm Bosheit und Schändlichkeit. Alles andere, was die Menschen für „Güter“ oder „Übel“ halten, ist weder gut noch schlecht; nur die Art und Weise, wie es vom Menschen gebraucht wird, lässt es zu „Gütern“ oder zu „Übeln“ werden. So ist der Mensch selbst letztlich Herr über gut und böse. Die Neuausgabe (2012) wurde von Rainer Nickel komplett neu übersetzt, eingeleitet und kommentiert. Die sprachliche Form der Übersetzung will den zeitgenössischen Leser ansprechen und motivieren, Senecas Gedanken als einen modernen Beitrag zur Diskussion über ein aktuelles Thema mit Gewinn nachzuvollziehen.

“Continue to act thus, my dear Lucilius—set yourself free for your own sake; gather and save your time, which till lately has been forced from you, or filched away, or has merely slipped from your hands. Make yourself believe the truth of my words,—that certain moments are torn from us, that some are gently removed, and that others glide beyond our reach. The most disgraceful kind of loss, however, is that due to carelessness.”
