Die Apocolcyntosis, überliefert unter dem Namen Senecas des Jüngeren, ist ein zwar kurzer, dafür aber umso boshafterer Text über die Vergöttlichung des Kaisers Claudius, dessen Eigenheiten und Schwächen hier bis ins Absurdeste karikiert werden. In der Tradition der Menippeischen Satire wechseln sich Prosa- und Verspartien ab, das Register reicht vom sublimen Epos bis zum Vulgärsten.

Da den Rezipienten nicht nur intime Kenntnis der ganzen, immer wieder in Anspielungen aufgerufenen lateinischen Literatur, sondern auch der höchsten Gesellschaftskreise Roms zur Mitte des ersten nachchristlichen Jahrhunderts abverlangt werden, ist der vorliegenden Übersetzung ein Kommentar beigegeben, um für das Verständnis des mitunter schlecht überlieferten Textes ein erstes Hilfsmittel zu bieten. Enthalten ist außerdem ein Essay von Niklas Holzberg, in dem die delikate Frage der Autorschaft thematisiert wird.

senecas Apokolokyntosis ist eine Parodie auf die Kaiserapotheose. Sie drückt damit auch die innere Distanz aufgeklärter Römer zu einem Zeitproblem aus, das durch die Vergöttlichung des Claudius neuerlich aktuell geworden war. Schon die Neubildung des Wortes "Apo-kolokyntosis", oft als "Verkürbissung" übersetzt, ist ein boshaftes Wortspiel, das Assoziationen an "Ver-gottung" (Apo-theose) hervorruft. Seneca hat die durch Claudius ausgesprochene Verbannung nach Corsica nie verwunden; entsprechend bissig geht er mit dem als behinderten Trottel dargestellten Kaiser um. Die Satire lebt von einer Vielfalt der Stilebenen; ständig parodierend ist sie um Anleihen aus älterer Literatur bemüht. Dem Wechsel des Schauplatzes entspricht das bunt zusammengesetzte Personal: Gestalten der Götter- und Dämonenwelt, Heroen, aber auch verstorbene oder noch lebende Personen bevölkern die Szene.

The wise advice addressed to his disciple Lucilius has a validity that transcends the boundaries of time. Seneca talks to us about the convenience of a balanced relationship with nature, about the importance of the things we do daily, how to lead a healthy and honest life, what is licit and what is not, what enriches and impoverishes us, what is good and what is bad without falling into Manichaeism, about the importance and cultivation of friendship... In short, on how to learn to live, love and die.

Chr.) nur eine Voraussetzung: die Fähigkeit und Bereitschaft, das Gute zu tun. Als einziges wirkliches Übel gelten ihm Bosheit und Schändlichkeit. Alles andere, was die Menschen für „Güter“ oder „Übel“ halten, ist weder gut noch schlecht; nur die Art und Weise, wie es vom Menschen gebraucht wird, lässt es zu „Gütern“ oder zu „Übeln“ werden. So ist der Mensch selbst letztlich Herr über gut und böse. Die Neuausgabe (2012) wurde von Rainer Nickel komplett neu übersetzt, eingeleitet und kommentiert. Die sprachliche Form der Übersetzung will den zeitgenössischen Leser ansprechen und motivieren, Senecas Gedanken als einen modernen Beitrag zur Diskussion über ein aktuelles Thema mit Gewinn nachzuvollziehen.

Seneca's letters to his friend Lucilius are an introduction to Stoic philosophy. The author is not aiming for a systematic presentation; he is concerned with showing ways of philosophically overcoming concrete problems of human life. Topics such as loneliness, illness and death affect us in the same way as they did people 2000 years ago. "You still remember the joy you felt when you took off the boy's toga and put on the man's and were led into the forum. Expect an even greater one when you shed your boyish spirit and philosophy accepts you among men."
