ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
The New York Times bestseller and basis for the Tony-winning hit musical, soon to be a major motion picture starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande
With millions of copies in print around the world, Gregory Maguire’s Wicked is established not only as a commentary on our time but as a novel to revisit for years to come. Wicked relishes the inspired inventions of L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, while playing sleight of hand with our collective memories of the 1939 MGM film starring Margaret Hamilton (and Judy Garland). In this fast-paced, fantastically real, and supremely entertaining novel, Maguire has populated the largely unknown world of Oz with the power of his own imagination.
Years before Dorothy and her dog crash-land, another little girl makes her presence known in Oz. This girl, Elphaba, is born with emerald-green skin—no easy burden in a land as mean and poor as Oz, where superstition and magic are not strong enough to explain or overcome the natural disasters of flood and famine. Still, Elphaba is smart, and by the time she enters Shiz University, she becomes a member of a charmed circle of Oz’s most promising young citizens.
But Elphaba’s Oz is no utopia. The Wizard’s secret police are everywhere. Animals—those creatures with voices, souls, and minds—are threatened with exile. Young Elphaba, green and wild and misunderstood, is determined to protect the Animals—even if it means combating the mysterious Wizard, even if it means risking her single chance at romance. Ever wiser in guilt and sorrow, she can find herself grateful when the world declares her a witch. And she can even make herself glad for that young girl from Kansas.
Recognized as an iconoclastic tour de force on its initial publication, the novel has inspired the blockbuster musical of the same name—one of the longest-running plays in Broadway history. Popular, indeed. But while the novel’s distant cousins hail from the traditions of magical realism, mythopoeic fantasy, and sprawling nineteenth-century sagas of moral urgency, Maguire’s Wicked is as unique as its green-skinned witch.

Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz
Regular price $7.99 Sale price $5.19 Save $2.80Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz (1908) marked a return to form of sorts for its author L. Frank Baum. Unhappy with the previous year’s publication of Ozma of Oz, and eight years removed from the publication of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum sought to reinvigorate his fledgling fantasy series with a novel true to its roots.
The story begins with an earthquake. Dorothy and her companions are plunged into the world of the Mangaboos, who blame them for the disaster that has wreaked havoc on their lives and destroyed their homes. Moments before they are to be sentenced to death, the Wizard of Oz appears in an air balloon—after years of living in exile from the Emerald City—and saves Dorothy, Eureka, Zeb, and Jim. The Wizard uses sleight-of-hand to convince the Mangaboos of his powers, allowing the group to escape. Together with the wizard, Dorothy and her companions travel through the Valley of Voe, climb Pyramid Mountain, and cross the Land of the Gargoyles, only to find themselves not only farther from home than when they began, but hungry, thirsty, and at the mercy of a vicious dragon. In a last-ditch effort, Dorothy attempts to reach Princess Ozma, in the hopes that the ruler of the Emerald City will save them from certain doom. With a familiar narrative and characters new and old, L. Frank Baum’s Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz is a sequel worthy both of its esteemed predecessor and the reader’s rapt attention.
Filled with rich, detailed layers of fantasy from the mind of L. Frank Baum, Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz is a story about the frail innocence of childhood and the will to persevere that can be found in even the youngest of hearts. Long overshadowed by the film, Baum’s series is required reading for children, adults with children, and adults who refuse to let life lose its flavor of fantasy.
This edition of L. Frank Baum’s Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz is a classic of children’s literature reimagined for modern readers.

After Wicked the story continues.
Dorothy, an orphan living in Kansas with her aunt, uncle, and her dog Toto, does not get to the cellar when the strong winds of a cyclone strike. The house, with her and her pet inside, flies through the air, but the girl manages to fall asleep. Upon waking, instead of seeing the arid lands of her village, she notices that she is in a flowery meadow surrounded by supernatural beings. There begin the adventures of the young girl, who must face the resentful Wicked Witch of the East with the help of Glinda, the good witch, who recommends traveling straight to the Emerald City. Only with the help of the Wizard of Oz, who lives there, can she return to her aunt and uncle's house.
Along the way, Dorothy will meet the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, a cowardly lion, and flying monkeys. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the most popular children's fable of the 20th century, adapted and re-adapted to film, television, and theater hundreds of times, tells with humor and charm the return home of a heroine with a lot of common sense and bravery, at least enough to get into a hot air balloon and face a witch with a pair of ruby slippers as her only weapon.
Lyman Frank Baum has written a modernized fairy tale, in which nightmares and anxieties are set aside to make room for entertainment and excitement.

On the plateau of the Yips, they learn that Cayke the cookie cook has lost her magic dishpan before continuing on to the lost lands of Herku. Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood
Regular price $48.00 Save $-48.00Before Liz Smith and Perez Hilton became household names in the world of celebrity gossip, before Rush Limbaugh became the voice of conservatism, there was Hedda Hopper. In 1938, this 52-year-old struggling actress rose to fame and influence writing an incendiary gossip column, “Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood,” that appeared in the Los Angeles Times and other newspapers throughout Hollywood’s golden age. Often eviscerating moviemakers and stars, her column earned her a nasty reputation in the film industry while winning a legion of some 32 million fans, whose avid support established her as the voice of small-town America. Yet Hopper sought not only to build her career as a gossip columnist but also to push her agenda of staunch moral and political conservatism, using her column to argue against U.S. entry into World War II, uphold traditional views of sex and marriage, defend racist roles for African Americans, and enthusiastically support the Hollywood blacklist.
While usually dismissed as an eccentric crank, Jennifer Frost argues that Hopper has had a profound and lasting influence on popular and political culture and should be viewed as a pivotal popularizer of conservatism. The first book to explore Hopper’s gossip career and the public’s response to both her column and her politics, Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood illustrates how the conservative gossip maven contributed mightily to the public understanding of film, while providing a platform for women to voice political views within a traditionally masculine public realm. Jennifer Frost builds the case that, as practiced by Hopper and her readers, Hollywood gossip shaped key developments in American movies and movie culture, newspaper journalism and conservative politics, along with the culture of gossip itself, all of which continue to play out today.
Read a review of the book from the Chronicle of Higher Education blog, Tenured Radical.
