Athenaeus’ Deipnosophists (The Learned Banqueters) is a major Imperial period Greek text in and of itself, but also a source of thousands of fragments by hundreds of authors, many of whom would otherwise be entirely unknown to us. This is the first full new critical edition of the text since that of Georg Kaibel well over a hundred years ago. Kaibel’s text is outdated in many ways, including the fact that he undervalued the Epitome manuscripts, which he thought had no independent significance for the constitution of the text.

The new edition is based on a full collation of the manuscripts, including not just Venetus Marcianus 447 (A, the sole surviving witness to the complete text) and the various Epitome manuscripts, but also a number of 15th-century hybrid versions of Athenaeus already known in Kaibel’s time but ignored by him. Systematic review of the latter set of manuscripts, as well as of early editions also ignored by Kaibel, has allowed numerous conjectures to be reassigned, radically altering our sense of the Early Modern history of the text. A separate, parallel edition of the Epitome is also included.

This now becomes the standard text of the Deipnosophistae and a basic reference work.

The Literature of the Early Modern Period in Germany 1520–1620 is a dictionary of authors that explores the literary landscape during the period between the Protestant Reformation and the Thirty Years War, with over 500 articles and several indexes. It presents complex literary legacies by bringing together previously scattered specialized research in conformity with modern research standards.

The first complete collection of constitutions and draughts of constitutions from Switzerland 1791 to 1865, includes approx. 470 national and cantonal documents. The documents are printed in their original languages. Vol. III encompasses 66 cantonal documents Aargau – Basel Stadt.

The projected thirty-volume Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception (EBR) is intended to serve as a comprehensive guide to the current state of knowledge on the background, origins, and development of the canonical texts of the Bible as they were accepted in Judaism and Christianity. Unprecedented in breadth and scope, this encyclopedia also documents the history of the Bible’s interpretation and reception across the centuries, not only in Judaism and Christianity, but also in literature, visual art, music, film, and dance, as well as in Islam and other religious traditions and new religious movements.

Peter Abelard's autobiography, the Historia calamitatum, is one of the best-known medieval texts, especially because of the story of his love for Heloise which it recounts. In recent decades, there was so much controversy about the authenticity of the documents concerning Abelard and Heloise that the critical interpretation of the texts was relegated to the sidelines. The present volume provides a way out of this impasse. In it, the famous text is subjected to a series of exemplary analyses from the perspectives of seven different 20th century literary theories (aesthetics of reception, Foucault, Gender Studies, Rhetorical Stylistic Analysis, Psychology of Literature, Cultural Studies, Deconstruction). The analyses are preceded by the Latin text of the Historia calamitatum with a modern German translation. This is thus the first time that the Historia calamitatum has been presented in a bilingual edition.

The Nietzsche Dictionary elucidates in detail some 300 terms from Nietzsche's vocabulary. The first volume presents 67 of them. The account of each term includes the number of occurrences, main uses, synonyms, the various meanings, components of meanings and semantically relevant contexts (with examples), and the historical linguistic and philosophical localisation of Nietzsche's use of the word, as well as a discussion of Nietzsche research and the reception of Nietzsche.

The complete dictionary will comprise 4 volumes. New articles will be pre-published in the database Nietzsche Online.

Glaspasten, Repliken von Gemmen in Glas, waren aufwendig in der Herstellung, seltener und teurer als z.B. Gips-Abgüsse in Daktyliotheken des 18. Jahrhunderts. Hersteller der Würzburger Glaspasten war Philipp Daniel Lippert (1702–1785), der die erste systematisch geordnete, von Verzeichnissen begleitete Daktyliothek herausbrachte. Die Sammlung ist die früheste dieser Art.

Band 2 der Würzburger Glaspasten enthält vorwiegend Abdrücke von Kameen und Intaglien des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts mit antiken Motiven, deren Originale meist verschollen sind. Im 18. Jahrhundert hielt man die meisten für antik. Erfasst wird hier der Beginn der wissenschaftlichen Gemmen-Forschung, als deren Vorreiter sich J. F. Christ (1700–1756) erweist. Anhang I: Lipperts Bücher. Anhang II: Otto Zwierlein, Plinius zur Kunst des Gemmen-Schneidens.

Pastes, replicas of gemstones made from a type of glass, were complex to produce; this made them rarer and more expensive than plaster casts, for example, in 18th century gemstone libraries. The manufacturer of the Würzburg pastes was Philipp Daniel Lippert (1702–1785), who also published the first systematically arranged gemstone library with accompanying indexes. The collection is the earliest of its kind. Volume 2 of the Würzburg Pastes contains mainly impressions of 16th and 17th century cameos and intaglios with antique motifs, whereby most of the originals have been lost. In the 18th century, most of them were considered antique. The beginning of scientific gem research is recorded here, with J. F. Christ (1700–1756) as its pioneer. Appendix I: Lippert’s books. Wahrnehmen, Sprechen, Denken und Handeln sind zeichenverfasste und interpretative Vorgänge. Deren Verständnis ist Ziel der Allgemeinen Zeichen- und Interpretationsphilosophie Günter Abels.
Insofern hierbei Zeichen nicht bloß als Stellvertreter-für-etwas und Interpretationen nicht bloß als Deutungen-von-etwas begriffen werden, rücken die Zeichen- und Interpretationsverhältnisse in eine fundamentale Stellung. Mit diesen Grundwörtern zeitgenössischer Philosophie lassen sich auch erfahrungsorganisierende, wirklichkeits- und sinnformierende Prozesse als sinnlogische Voraussetzungen aufschlussreich beschreiben. So macht die Untersuchung der Zeichen- und Interpretationspraxis unsere alltäglichen wie auch besonderen Welt-, Fremd- und Selbstverhältnisse verständlich.

This monograph covers in a comprehensive manner the current state of classification theory with respect to infinite abelian groups. A wide variety of ways to characterise different classes of abelian groups by invariants, isomorphisms and duality principles are discussed.

The Early Modern Period in Germany 1620–1720 extends the "dictionary of authors" tradition into the 18^th century. The dictionary aims to illuminate the literary forms, dynamics, and debates of the past. Each article offers a biographical portrait while also analyzing and contextualizing the author’s works. The articles, which are based on primary sources, also provide details concerning manuscripts, print publications, and research literature.

Wohl kaum eine Ereignis der deutschen Geschichte hatte so vielfältige und weitreichende Folgen wie das Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Der Schock produzierte eine wahre Flut an Überlegungen, Planspielen und Denkschriften, die sich immer wieder mit der Frage der politischen, gesellschaftlichen und moralischen Erneuerung beschäftigten. Weitgehend unbekannt sind in diesem Zusammenhang die heftigen Diskussionen geblieben, die seit Sommer 1945 im deutschen Südwesten entbrannten. Katholische Intellektuelle und Honoratioren sahen nun den Zeitpunkt gekommen, die nationale Bindung aufzugeben; an die Stelle eines preußisch-kleindeutschen Reichs sollte eine stammesföderalistisch geprägte Neugliederung treten. Überlegungen dieser Art lassen sich bereits vor 1933 zwischen Lörrach, Konstanz und Karlsruhe, aber auch bis Augsburg und Bregenz nachweisen. Zusätzliche schien die Aufteilung der Länder Baden und Württemberg durch die französische und amerikanische Besatzungszone, die Chance für eine völlig neue Grenzziehung zu erhöhen. Auf der Basis unbekannter französischer, deutschen, schweizerischer und österreichischer Quellen sowie bislang unzugänglicher Privatnachlässe schildert der Autor minutiös den Verlauf der Diskussion und die Visionen der wichtigsten Wortführer.

Die Autorinnen und Autoren untersuchen in ihren Beiträgen europäische Endzeit- und Untergangsvorstellungen von der Spätantike bis hinein ins 21. Jahrhundert, welche lange Zeit über in Anlehnung an die biblischen Apokalypsen und allen voran an die neutestamentliche Johannes-Offenbarung entstanden. Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt auf den dahinter auszumachenden sozialen Dynamiken und diskursiven und medialen Faktoren, die gerade auch in End-Setzungen grundlegende identitätsstiftende, einheits- und gemeinschaftsbildende Funktionen erkennen lassen. Der kulturwissenschaftlich ausgerichtete und unter diesem Blickwinkel ausführlich eingeleitete Band unterteilt sich in drei die Moderne und drei die Frühe Neuzeit und das Mittelalter behandelnde Abschnitte mit den Schwerpunkten: Allmachtsformen, Medienregulative, Denken der Kontingenz, typologische Schemata, Differenz und Gemeinsinn und Zeithorizonte.

Die zeitliche Dimension von Kulturgeschichte wurde lange Zeit durch die Schilderungen der Bibel, ergänzt um die Darstellung klassischer Autoren bestimmt. Mit dem frühneuzeitlichen Aufkommen der Naturwissenschaften bildete sich allmählich ein alternatives Paradigma heraus, das religiöse Gewissheiten in Frage stellte und geistige und geistliche Autoritäten herausforderte. Im Rahmen dieser weltanschaulichen Auseinandersetzung erhofften sich beide Seiten Unterstützung durch die Erkenntnisse der sich zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts ausbildenden Altertumswissenschaften. Ihre Vertreter waren sowohl durch die Verfahren des kritischen Quellenstudiums geprägt wie auch durch die Anwendung naturwissenschaftlicher Untersuchungsmethoden.

Dabei verlief die Entwicklung von einer „biblischen Chronologie" hin zu naturwissenschaftlich und durch historische Belege gesicherten Geschichtsschreibung keineswegs linear und einseitig. Gerade aufgrund der doppelten Prägung früher Altertumswissenschaftler durch religiöse Weltbilder und die Schulung in (natur-)wissenschaftlichem Denken, entstanden immer neue Vorstellungen und Konzepte über das Alter menschlicher Kultur.

Der Band setzt sich in mehreren wissenschaftshistorischen Fallstudien mit diesen Entwicklungen auseinander.

From the birth of Berlin’s railway network to the time when the bombs of the Second World War and the concrete slabs of the Wall changed the city forever, the Prussian and later German capital counted eight major railway stations. These were beacons in the city: impressive monuments, magnificently built for the bygone rituals of arrival and departure, yet tightly woven into a distinct part of town.

Railway stations are magical, meaningful places, allowing for escape as well as promise, nostalgia as well as novelty. They process all sorts of people, from well-to-do business types to unfortunates forced to live on the fringes of society. There is a nervous energy around them, created by those looking forward to their journey, others trying to get oriented in a place that is new to them, and some facing the drudgery of yet another commute.

And if pre-World War 2 Berlin was anything, it was energetic. Building an adequate transport infrastructure for Europe’s fastest-growing city proved to be a continuous challenge that required flexibility and adaptation and touched the city in ways that can still be seen today. This is the history of Berlin’s railway stations, the people that used them, and the way the city was shaped by them.

Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Monographie werden deutsche und englische Personenbezeichnungen unter Berücksichtigung sprachhistorischer Aspekte und anhand von Merkmalen so beschrieben, daß lexikalisierte Derivate analysiert, zugleich Bedingungen für Neubildungen formuliert und eine explizite Beschreibung der Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Sprachen ermöglicht werden.

Die Kommentierung erläutert umfassend und aktuell das gesamte Statusrecht des Bundes- und Landtagsabgeordneten sowie der in Deutschland gewählten Abgeordneten des Europäischen Parlaments. Systematische Grundlage ist das Abgeordnetengesetz des Bundes, dem das Landesrecht vielfach noch entspricht. Das Europaabgeordnetengesetz und die Abgeordnetengesetze der Länder sind synoptisch gegenübergestellt und werden jeweils dann eingehender betrachtet, wenn Abweichungen dies nahe legen.

Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt ist das Recht der Fraktionen, soweit es seine Grundlage in den Abgeordnetengesetzen oder - wie bei einigen Bundesländern der Fall - in besonderen Fraktionsgesetzen hat. Damit werden zwei zentrale Bereiche der staatlichen Politikfinanzierung erstmals im Zusammenhang analysiert.

Das Für und Wider der bestehenden Regelungen und alternativer Modelle wird in klar formulierter Auseinandersetzung mit Rechtsprechung und Literatur diskutiert, wobei die Parlamentspraxis bei der Betrachtung stets im Vordergrund steht. Das Werk leistet so nicht nur einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Versachlichung der Diskussion über das Statusrecht der Abgeordneten und der Fraktionen - insbesondere ihrer finanziellen Ausstattung - sondern führt auch wieder zusammen, was sich in der Gesetzgebung und Parlamentspraxis in Bund und Ländern teilweise auseinander entwickelt hat.

Der Kommentar richtet sich an Abgeordnete der deutschen Parlamente, Europaabgeordnete sowie an alle Interessenten in Wissenschaft, Praxis und Politik, die mit den hier angesprochenen statusrechtlichen Fragen befasst sind.
