Der Jubiläumsband zum 50-jährigen Bestehen der Fakultät Raumplanung an der Technischen Universität Dortmund zeigt, wie sich im Laufe der Jahrzehnte eine Disziplin mit einem eigenen Profil etabliert hat. Die interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit und die Internationalisierung der Lehre sind zu einem Markenkern der Planungsausbildung geworden.
Die Publikation beschreibt nicht nur die Entwicklung und den Stand der Dortmunder Fakultät Raumplanung, sondern hebt zugleich ihren Stellenwert für die Planungsdisziplin national und international hervor. Wozu überhaupt Landschaftsarchitektur? In der Fachwelt lautet die Antwort einhellig: für den Menschen. Doch wer ist damit gemeint? Die Gesellschaft, die Bewohner einer Stadt, eines Quartiers, eines Hauses? Ist ein durchschnittlicher, idealer oder ein individueller Mensch gemeint, wenn Freiräume wie Gärten, Plätze, Parks und Promenaden entworfen, realisiert, vermittelt oder kritisiert werden? Und welche Rolle spielt der Landschaftsarchitekt selbst dabei als Mensch?

Wir berühren Landschaftsarchitektur und werden zugleich von ihr berührt. Die Art und Intensität dieser Berührung wird unterschiedlich gedeutet und bewertet. Wie sehen diese Deutungen und Bewertungen aus? Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Buches gehen diesen und weiteren Fragen zum Verhältnis von Mensch und Landschaftsarchitektur nach – experimentell, beschreibend, theoretisch.

Building cost matters are among the elementary requirements of architecture. A reliable calculation is in the essential interest of the client. Depending on the construction task, cost awareness can involve varying considerations: narrowly calculated leeway in financing requires low-budget solutions to be able to realize projects in the first place. However, planning that focusses not just on the initial investment but also incorporates usage costs in the balance from the beginning and takes a long-term view of building measures is more economical in the long term.
KostenBewusstBauen provides ideas for new builds, conversions, and renovations based on fourteen exemplary solutions for indoor, outdoor, and urban spaces that received an award in relation to the architecture prize “Award for Exemplary Buildings in the State of Hessen 2017”. Thematic essays are dedicated to aspects of cost-effectiveness and provide an introduction to the increasingly significant topic of sufficiency.

Five routes lead through Dortmund and follow the sound of the city: paths, water, materials, town and countryside, and public spaces. These routes cross Dortmund’s urban area, rendering history, the present, and geographical features visible and understandable in specific places. The hubs of these urban explorations are museums, industrial monuments, and the municipal church St. Reinoldi. The routes include aristocratic manors, parks, gas pipelines, village structures and churches going back to medieval times, buildings from postwar modernity, areas of industrialization and structural change, and colleges. Dortmunder Passagen opens up new perspectives and invites the reader to explore the city.

The Topography of Terror, a place of learning and remembrance, evolved in central Berlin on the ruined site where the headquarters of Gestapo, SS, and Reich Security Main Office once stood in the Nazi era. It now has over a million visitors every year. In this volume, the historian Andreas Nachama, who was director of the Topography of Terror Foundation from 1994 to 2019, recalls his youthful impressions of the place and traces the evolution and establishment of the Topography of Terror, with which he was closely associated from the 1980s onwards. The architect and exhibition designer Ursula Wilms and the landscape architect Heinz W. Hallmann present the basic concept that guided their overall design plan for the Topography of Terror, combining architecture, landscape, and exhibition design. The original photographs in the volume by the photographer Friederike von Rauch convey the atmosphere of the site shortly before its completion in 2010.

Wo sich während des NS-Regimes die Zentralen der Gestapo und des Reichssicherheitshauptamtes befanden, ist mitten in Berlin ein Lern- und Erinnerungsort mit jährlich mehr als einer Million Besucher*innen entstanden. In diesem Band berichtet Historiker Andreas Nachama, von 1994 bis 2019 Direktor der Stiftung Topographie des Terrors, von seinen ersten persönlichen Begegnungen mit dem Ort und zeichnet den Weg von der Entstehung und Etablierung der Topographie des Terrors nach, an der er seit den 1980er-Jahren entscheidend mitwirkte. Die Architektin und Ausstellungsgestalterin Ursula Wilms und der Landschaftsarchitekt Heinz W. Hallmann legen die Leitgedanken ihres Entwurfs für die Neugestaltung der Topographie des Terrors dar – ein Gesamtkonzept aus Architektur, Landschaftsarchitektur und Dauerausstellungen. Erstmals werden in dem Band die Fotografien Friederike von Rauchs veröffentlicht, in denen die Künstlerin die Atmosphäre des Ortes kurz vor dessen Fertigstellung im Jahr 2010 einfing.

The Neue Nationalgalerie on the Berlin Kulturforum is an architectural icon as well as the crowning conclusion of architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s life work. An outstandingly successful and sensitive refurbishment and modernization project was carried out for the building’s most significant overhaul since its opening in 1968. It complies with the requirements of a contemporary museum exhibition facility, as well as monument-preservation guidelines. David Chipperfield Architects developed the renovation concept under the motto of "As much Mies as possible."

This publication provides deep insight into the planning, execution, monument preservation, and restoration from the perspective of those involved. The exemplary handling of the historical fabric is presented in design documents and numerous large-format photographs that impressively illustrate the design stage, the construction site, and the refurbishment results.

The Open Call in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking, northern part of Belgium) is more than just another architecture competition: any governmental agency or public institution can choose to work with an Open Call for any given construction project. Since its invention by the first Vlaams Bouwmeester bOb van Reeth in 2000, more than 700 assignments have been published in this procedure, resulting in almost 350 completed public architectural and infrastructural projects so far. This volume compiles 70 of these, from all over Flanders—from it’s west coast to the German border in the east—to illustrate the astounding quality of these projects. The projects prove that public architecture can actually be daring, thought-provoking, cooperative, and well-done at the same time. It is time to take an extensive look at how this procedure works, how it is received by architects, politicians, and clients—and ultimately, at the outstanding public architecture in Flanders as an example for other countries to study closely.

Nine years after publication of the first major monograph on the work of the architectural office Lederer Ragnarsd.ttir Oei, a second volume marks the tentative culmination of many years of harmonious collaboration between the three partners. From the outset, the office committed to the guiding principle: First the city, then the house. A second principle: Inside is different from outside, is reflected in its buildings. The external form of a house, as part of the public realm, is committed to the city, whereas the interior of a house is dedicated to the private needs and lifestyle of its residents. Buildings are not industrial products, but individuals in which the creative influence of hand and intellect are manifest.

How will science and technology shape future cities—and how do cities shape science and technology in return? Who are the actors behind these processes? Driven by a transdisciplinary approach, Perspectives in Metropolitan Research 6 elaborates on the intertwinements of science, technology, and cities. The contributors discuss recent theoretical approaches at the interfaces between digitalization and cities and define their own role as a researcher. In order to provide a positive mobility experience, the transition from one mobility mode to another must be managed smoothly and safely, and individual, shared or public means of transportation must become convenient and easy. English description: Armin Linke’s night photography reveals the vacancy of the Bauakademie as a trace of Schinkel in Berlin’s urban fabric. The rudimentary replica of the corner construction raises questions about the future use and form of this centrally located site. Despite current majority support in Parliament for a reconstruction of the historical envelope―analogous to the recently completed Humboldt Forum―there are clearly more differentiated ideas among architects and urban society in Berlin about the future of the Bauakademie building. There is strong resistance to the appropriation of this important institution and building task by representational politics, that actually threaten to obscure more historical traces than they are supposed to make visible with the motto “As much Schinkel as possible”. At this important moment, Bauakademie Berlin offers conceptual perspectives for a contemporary Bauakademie in the form of texts, architectural drawings, and artist’s photographs.

The Bauhaus Building in Dessau, designed by Walter Gropius in 1926, represents a "built manifesto of Bauhaus ideas" and is one of modernism’s most important buildings. Together with the associated Masters’ Houses (Meisterhäuser), the Houses with Balcony Access (Laubenganghäuser) in Dessau, and Bauhaus buildings in Weimar and Bernau, it is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The book focuses on strategies for preserving the Bauhaus Building. It presents the building—and its eventful history—from its construction to its destruction, rebuilding, and restoration. Using texts, photographs, and numerous blueprints, the book provides a detailed exploration of specific aspects of the architecture—such as the building’s outer shell, materials, construction, color scheme, and surfaces—and the long-term preservation concept for the site. In doing so, it proposes structural measures aimed at adapting the building to today’s challenges and at conserving the building with its historic and artistic characteristics.

Archaeology of Modernism. Preservation Bauhaus Dessau is the revised and expanded edition of Archaeology of Modernism. Renovation Bauhaus Dessau, which was published by JOVIS as Volume 23 of the EDITION BAUHAUS series in 2006. This new edition is presented as Volume 58.

Und doch hat der Bausektor im Laufe seiner Geschichte immer wieder die Einfuhrung neuer Technologien und Techniken erlebt, oftmals befördert durch Großprojekte wie den Eiffelturm oder das Opernhaus in Sydney. Das vorliegende Buch beleuchtet diesen Aspekt von Großprojekten. Der Band ist das Ergebnis einer interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit von Wissenschaftler*innen aus den Bereichen Sozialwissenschaft und Bauwesen. How architects are designing for communal living in a country enduring the diminishment of private space: Japan

This book explores the concept of “co-dividuality,” an architecture that expresses a new response to joint living in the age of post-individualism, social media and the sharing economy. The focus lies on current and contemporary experimentation in Japanese architecture presenting thematic homes with shared spaces designed as a result of warm, simple, fun and contemporary design reflections. In addition to their private room, the co-tenants have large common areas where they can practice urban farming, create a start-up, cook together or experience new spatial ergonomics. The book offers an overview not only on domestic space but also on projects characterized by a multifarious mix between public and private spheres. What Is Co-Dividuality? reflects on how we might want to live tomorrow.

Today, the Kunsthaus Graz is integral to the urban identity of Austria’s second-largest city. The “friendly alien” designed by architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier has become a familiar object in the city since landing in 2003. But views on the building have changed with the times. Looking back at nearly twenty years of history since the building's creation, the book opens up a kaleidoscopic perspective with a primary focus on how the Kunsthaus is used. It contextualizes the Kunsthaus Graz both locally and globally while exploring its relation to those who use it.

GAM. 17 takes a new look at wood—at its multi-faceted nature and architectural possibilities— and proposes building and design concepts that fully utilize the material’s potential for a more climate-friendly construction industry.
