Das Dach ist die Urform menschlicher Behausungen, bei dem Holz als Baustoff für die Verwendung von Dachkonstruktionen - zumindest im Wohnhausbau - nach wie vor eine enorme Bedeutung zukommt. Aufgrund des geringen Gewichts, der schnellen Montage, der Elementierbarkeit und der modernen Verbindungstechnik werden auch in Zukunft Holzdachstühle in Verwendung sein. Das Buch gibt einen Überblick über die gängigen Konstruktionssysteme, die im Altbau und Neubau angewendet werden, bis hin zu Sonderformen, Dachgaupen und modernen Konstruktionen.
In der Neuauflage wurden speziell die Auswirkungen der aktuellen Normen berücksichtigt (EUROCODE 5) sowie die Arten der Dachstühle, Verbindungen und Hallentragwerke überarbeitet. Auch Hinweise zur Bestandsanalyse zur späteren Dachraumnutzung fehlen nicht.

A book about the late oeuvre of the Austrian architect, designer and theorist Josef Frank, whose seminal work has generated new interest following the successful exhibition at the MAK in Vienna.

Josef Frank is seen as an important visionary at the early stages of the Moderne movement and an outspoken critic of its dogmatism. With his unconventional designs he not only left his mark on Viennese culture at the beginning of the previous century, but also influenced the "Scandinavian style". From the mid-1930s, Frank lived predominantly in Sweden. There he worked for the Svenskt Tenn company, which still maintains the largest part of his designs in its range.

This bibliophilic book introduces Frank’s late, unbuilt building projects, as well as his timeless furniture and fabric designs.

The book shows how architecture in Norway has been shaped by resource availability, changing social conditions and architectural style impulses through the centuries. The book is thoroughly illustrated with photos, ground plan drawings and isometric drawings.

This outline of Norwegian architectural history provides the first comprehensive presentation of architecture in Norway, from tents and housing constructions in the Stone Age until contemporary architecture as the iconic, contemporary Opera House in Oslo. The book shows how Norwegian vernacular architecture has been shaped by natural conditions and resources, changing cultural situations and building traditions through the ages. By implementing a view on how the cultivated and built landscapes of Norway have been affected by human hands and creativity, the authors give a contextual and interdisciplinary presentation of Norwegian architecture history.

The authors show how the technological basis of Iron Age and Medieval architecture was developed long before the construction of stave churches. In the first part of the book, recent research on building construction both in prehistoric times and during the middle ages are presented. From 1960–1980, both eastern and western Europe experienced a construction boom of new dimensions. Cybernetics, the science of planning, and sociology, as well as the new possibilities offered by technology and production, paved the way to large-scale processes and systems in architecture and urban design, which favored technocratic and utopian concepts. The long-awaited fifth volume on The Complete Works of Herzog & de Meuron presents the sixty projects completed between 2002 and 2004 with characteristic attention to detail. These include buildings that have already become contemporary architectural icons, such as the National Stadium in Beijing and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, but also projects which, though never realized, have influenced the architectural discourse. These include the residential tower for the Schatzalp Hotel, which overlooks Davos and inspired a new generation of Alpine architecture.

The space we live in, reduced to a minimum, has been fascinating us for generations – the writer Thoreau lived in a self-built hut in the forest from 1845 –1847. In 1952, Le Corbusier built a hut at the Côte d'Azur for himself and his wife. Inspired by this, Urs Peter Flückiger, together with his students, built an ecologically and economically sustainable cabin in the Texan prairie. All three projects share the idea of minimal space and its relationship with the surrounding nature. In text, drawings, and photographs, this book analyses the three projects and shows parallels and similarities. Inspired by Tolstoy’s story How Much Land Does A Man Need?, the author asks: "How much house does a man need?", thereby providing a pointed contribution to the current discussion on the requirement for housing.

Although traditionally a building material of the warmer climate zones, bamboo is becoming increasingly popular amongst architects in the northern hemisphere; bamboo has several advantages – it is very stable, of low weight, and highly elastic, in addition to being readily available as well as renewable. From 1970–1990, architecture experienced a revision as part of the post-modern movement. The critical attitude to the functionalistic Moderne style and the influence of semiotics and philosophical trends, such as phenomenology, on architectural theory led to an increased interest in its history, expression, perception, and context. [a]FA is a laboratory of the Institute of Architecture of the University for Applied Arts in Vienna, in which spatial, infrastructure, ecological and cultural phenomena of the Sub-Saharan region are investigated. The book describes the story of Clarté, Le Corbusier’s first apartment building, continuing the narrative into the 21st century. The steel skeleton building completed in Geneva in 1930/1932 is a prototype of the Moderne style and a precursor of the Unité d’Habitation.

The building was neglected for many decades and not listed as a historic building until the 1990s. In 2007 the external envelope was repaired as the first step, followed by refurbishment of the interior, in which building preservation requirements were taken into account in an exemplary manner. The building log book by the architects and structural engineers is illustrated with numerous new and historic drawings and photographs, and has been supplemented with an account of the building’s history. The renovated building is presented in large photographs.

In the 19th century Hungary witnessed unprecedented social, economic and cultural development. The country became an equal partner within the Dual Monarchy when the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 was concluded. Architecture and all forms of design flourished as never before. A distinctly Central European taste emerged, in which the artistic presence of the German-speaking lands was augmented by the influence of France and England. As this process unfolded, attempts were made to find a uniquely Hungarian form, based on motifs borrowed from peasant art as well as real (or fictitious) historical antecedents.

"Motherland and Progress" – the motto of 19th-century Hungarian reformers – reflected the programme embraced by the country in its drive to define its identity and shape its future.

The international authors of this three-volume work show Europe’s post-war architecture in a new light. In spite of geo-political divisions and national differences, the developments in East and West are seen in context for the first time – a mutual perception, the transfer of knowledge, and cooperation, opened avenues across boundaries. After the Second World War, a divided Europe was much affected by a period of reconstruction. This was influenced by the different political systems – in the socialist East and in the capitalist West, the focus was on cohesion in society and its cultural and architectural expression. The international practice, which is involved in architectural, urban, and product design – as well as branding – is known for its experimental and interdisciplinary designs as well as for its strong social commitment.

The publication will document only projects characteristic of this social responsibility – it portrays architecture as an active tool for driving, in a global context, the development of places worth living in. One key project is the Solar Kiosk developed in 2012, a high-output, solar-based unit which is already used by many communities in Sub-Saharan Africa to secure their power supply.

Der lang erwartete fünfte Band des Gesamtwerks von Herzog & de Meuron stellt die sechzig Projekte der Jahre 2002 bis 2004 mit der charakteristischen Sorgfalt vor. Im vorliegenden Zeitraum erfährt der Städtebau eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit des Architekturbüros. Der Architekturboom im China jener Jahre hat Planungen für ganze Quartiere hervorgebracht. Davon zeugen die Masterpläne für Jindong New Development Area in China, für Jerez de la Frontera in Spanien oder für die Olympischen Spiele in London, die ganze Stadtregionen für die Zukunft öffneten.

As building construction is becoming increasingly complex, the field of building technology is becoming more and more important. As an intermediary between all parties involved in a construction project, the architect must be able to understand what is involved and to advise his clients. This volume covers the fields of water supply and disposal, electric installations and the energy-related subjects, i.e. heating, ventilation and lighting. The compendium combines the successful individual volumes Room Conditioning and Water Cycles and supplements these with the two hitherto unpublished volumes Electric Installation and Lighting design. The student and architect are introduced to the basic principles, terms and systems of building technology installations and equipment.

Das Konzept des Stoffwechsels wurde von Gottfried Semper (1803–1879) zum wesentlichen Element seiner Theorie erhoben. Er bezeichnete damit das Phänomen, dass Strukturformen, die ursprünglich mit der Bearbeitungstechnik eines Materials verbunden waren, von ihrer konstruktiven Aufgabe entlastet als Ornamente in andere Stoffe übertragen werden.

Das Thema wird erstmals aus historischer Sicht wie im Spiegel aktueller, transdisziplinärer Erkenntnisse dargestellt. Beispiele von Aalto bis Zumthor illustrieren die Aspekte einstiger und heutiger Materialkonzepte.

Das Zacherlhaus befindet sich im Herzen Wiens nur 180 Meter vom Wiener Stephansdom entfernt und ist eines der bedeutendsten Bauwerke der Otto-Wagner-Schule. Joesef Plečnik, der später an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Prag unterrichtete und Laibach ab etwa 1925 städtebaulich umgestaltete, errichtete es für den Bauherren Johann Zacherl in den Jahren 1903–1905. Es wurde als erstes Wohn- und Geschäftsgebäude modernen Stils in der Altstadt errichtet und zählt zu seinen bekanntesten Gebäuden in Wien. Im Buch kommen ausschließlich Experten für mitteleuropäische Architektur des 20. Jahrhunderts zu Wort, wie z.B. Ákos Moravánszky und Kenneth Frampton. Eine gründliche Renovierung die 2015 abgeschlossen sein wird, ist Anlass für diese großzügig bebilderte, repräsentative Dokumentation.

All new on the eastern front

Now as before, Japanese architecture is very popular in Europe and the western world. This publication provides an overview of its many design concepts and cross-references. Using design examples and interviews, the book presents thirteen current positions.The publication focuses on young architects who take up extremely independent positions within Japanese architecture, as well as on Pritzker Prize winners Toyo Ito and Fumihiko Maki.

Six essays by European specialists on Japan provide supplementary insights into the aesthetics and space concepts of Japanese architecture, making cross-references to Japan’s architectural history, and explaining current lines of development. The book tells the story of Clarté, Le Corbusier’s first apartment building. The steel skeleton building completed in Geneva in 1932 is a precursor of the Unité d’Habitation. In 2007 the external envelope was repaired, followed by a refurbishment of the interior, in which preservation requirements are exemplified. The building log book is illustrated with new and historic drawings and photos, and enriched with the building’s history.

Building with wood as an ecologically viable material is a tradition with a long history. In the most typical method, elements are connected by using wood joints which do not require the assistance of adhesives or metal connectors.

Ecological refurbishment to Passivhaus standard requires know-how and experience.  For this reason, the book has been produced as a design tool which systematically covers existing solutions. Examples relating to building physics, construction and ecology issues are presented in the same successful manner as in the Passivhaus Building Component Catalog also published by IBO/IBN (Institute for Building Biology and Ecology) using standard cross-sections and connection details in four-color scale drawings, as well as numerous tables.They have been organized by type and period of building and can easily be used to derive individual solutions.

The 19^th-century German architect and artist, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, was among the great personalities in the world of architecture. Classicism and Romanticism moved towards Modern Architecture in his buildings; his Collection of Architectural Designs led the way to our contemporary understanding of the work of the architect; and as a state master building he shaped the architectural culture of his time.

A universal scholar and versatile artist, Schinkel led an intensive, if not boundless exchange with the society and the developments of the 19^th century. Built to Grow investigates patterns of growth and dynamics in nature with the aim of creating a new “living architecture” that can be applied to architectonic designs. It examines biological processes to identify basic principles of growth and translate them into exemplary architectonic ideas and visions. The project brings together experts from the fields of architecture, biology, art, mechatronics, and robotics.

Plottegg is one of Austria's most high-profile avant-garde architects. He has been pioneering the use of the computer since the 1980s. However, using the technology purely as an electronic drawing board is not enough for him - programs are intended to generate solutions. The works selected for this publication therefore represent the architect's design concepts and working methods rather than solutions for building projects. Daylight is the most important element determining the mood and appearance of architecture, more so than all construction materials. The Atlas of Fantastic infrastructures deals with the characterization of architecture, media and digital infrastructure. In concrete terms, it deals with the materiality of buildings and the intangibility of data. While technical or functional studies often tend to "flatten" the multiplex phenomena, the author speculatively propose four abstract prisms: 1) AFFAIR WITH PHANTOMS – who do we want to meet in a digitally mediated space, and what kind of conversation/activity will we have?; 2) PARA-DESIRE – where do our surreal desires live, and what are their strategies?; 3) MEDIATED SPACE CATALOGUE – what kinds of data, information, things, spaces and places are available in the world, and how our activities blend them?; 4) GIFTS OF THE GARDENS – how can an idea enter physical reality, and what are the pathways of such becomings?

The global success story of the Basel architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron has local roots. This book traces these origins while identifying the essential ideas, professional ethics, and development of their architectural practice, established in 1978.
The biographies of both architects and the activities of their practice are intimately bound up with the town of Basel. With this embeddedness in Basel as a point of departure, the authors elucidate central themes of their architectural oeuvre: from habitat to monument. With reference to exemplary buildings, they analyze the motifs, constructive principles, and spatial design of the architectonic works of Herzog & de Meuron.
In addition, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron lead us on tours through Basel and its surroundings: statements by the architects, along with photographs taken especially for this volume by George Dupin, present the locales and buildings that have played key roles for the work of these architects. Sechs Jahrzehnte nach Erscheinen der ersten Ausgabe ergänzte Julius Posener diesen Klassiker der Stadtplanungstheorie um die erstmals 1945 erschienen Essays von Lewis Mumford und Frederic J. Osborn zu einem Streitgespräch der späten sechziger Jahre über die Gestalt der Stadt. Die vorliegende Neuauflage spannt den  Bogen ins 21. Jahrhundert und erweitert die Ausgabe von 1968 um ein Vorwort von Carl Fingerhuth.

Olympic venues after the Games

Olympic sports facilities are places that get a great amount of attention for a short period of time. Moreover, media attention has rapidly increased in recent years, which reinforces the effect of temporary use even more. But what happens to the elaborately planned and expensive sports venues in the aftermath of the games?

Photographer Bruno Helbling followed the fate of six venues with his camera: Athens (1896, 2004), Berlin (1936), Sarajevo (1998), Torino (2006), Beijing (2008), and Sochi (2014). His images are neither judgmental nor disavowing: He offers the viewer an objective yet aesthetically captivating look at what now awaits visitors to the respective sites. The variety of possible subsequent uses shown here – whether planned or unplanned – is both insightful and educational. At the same time, it demonstrates the effectiveness of architecture in an environment that is beyond the reaches of planning control. A book that is both poetic and inspiring.

The interest in clay as a building material – which has proved its sustainable characteristics over centuries – is growing. Light clay, which is light in weight and easy to work, is presented here as a versatile and forward-looking building material for modern computer-aided timber construction and the renewal of historic timber-framed buildings with clay infill. The main focus in the book is the observation of computer-based methods that go beyond strictly case-based or problem-solution-oriented paradigms. Informal settlements made up of corrugated iron shacks and other materials are a ubiquitous feature in the megacities of Africa, Asia and Latin America. In response to the enormous influx of migrants from the countryside, the informal city experienced a phenomenal growth. While rightly criticized for their lack of hygiene and for their low-level living conditions, these shelters nevertheless provide planning strategies and possibly even a roadmap to a resilient city in an emerging territory.

The unregistered economic activities associated with them proliferate in a similar way and basic urban services are increasingly provided informally. Examples of these economic phenomena are microloans, bottom-up insurance or professions such as the "Kuré-Yalew" (refuse collector), who acts as an "urban miner" and thus contributes a valuable service to the community by recycling materials.

YoVA wurde als Initiative zur Förderung junger Wiener Architekturschaffender von der Stadt Wien 2005 ins Leben gerufen. Die Bedingungen zur Teilnahme sind neben einer jurierten Bewerbung die Kriterien, dass die Bürobetreiber unter 45 Jahre alt sind, den Bürostandort in Wien und mindestens ein Projekt in Wien realisiert haben.
Während bei YoVA 1-3 der Schwerpunkt auf den gleichnamigen Ausstellungen lag, werden die Ergebnisse von YoVA 4 ausschließlich in dieser Publikation veröffentlicht; anders als bisher konnten sich auch junge Wiener Landschaftsarchitekturbüros bewerben.
Im November 2014 wurde aus den Bewerbungen unter dem Juryvorsitz von Bart Lootsma elf junge Wiener Büros ausgewählt: Lukas Göbl, einzueins architektur, franz-architekten, zwoPK Landschaftsarchitektur, Schenker Salvi Weber Architekten, architekt günter mohr, idealice, LOSTINARCHITECTURE, miss_vdr ar-chitektur, space craft ARCHITEKTUR und bauchplan.
