This volume deals with the perception and conception of crises in ancient societies from an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspective, with contributions on Greece, Rome, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, India and China.

The focus is on the extent to which the modern concept of crisis had equivalents in the respective societies and how these crises were conceptually grasped and terminologically described. To achieve this, specialists from various fields have examined written and, in some cases, archaeological sources from the respective societies from the point of view of which developments or events were regarded as crises, how they were dealt with, and with which terms these situations were described.

In this way, the similarities and differences in the conception of crises in ancient societies are illustrated, making the volume an important reference for studies on crises in pre-modern societies.

Wie stark und wie dauerhaft prägten Entnazifizierung und Reeducation das Verhältnis der Deutschen zu NS-Vergangenheit, Demokratie und den Besatzungsmächten? Welche Vorstellungen, Wertmuster und Diskurse sind damit bis heute verknüpft? Ist die Entnazifizierung wirklich gescheitert? Auch 80 Jahre nach Kriegsende scheinen die einst mit Blick auf den Sieg über das nationalsozialistische Deutschland formulierten Ziele weiterhin oder erneut kontrovers zu sein. Angesichts der aktuellen Debatten um die deutungs- und erinnerungspolitischen Potentiale der NS- und Nachkriegszeit ist der Band einem kritisch reflektierten Blick auf die Vergangenheit wie auf die Gegenwart verpflichtet. This new interpretation of V Satire is embedded in a broader analysis of a central topos in Juvenal's work: the degradation of the clientela. The introduction illuminates Juvenal's attitude towards this topic, giving particular attention to his relationship to Martial and to the reception of this topos by Lucian. The commentary explains text critical and linguistic issues and thoroughly investigates the most relevant historical aspects.

Die Lexikographie ist eine kulturelle Praxis mit jahrhundertealter Tradition und Akzeptanz, die im Zeitalter von Künstlicher Intelligenz auf ihre Rolle und Bedeutsamkeit in der modernen Welt zu betrachten ist. Dieser Sammelband schlägt eine Brücke von der traditionellen Lexikographie mit ihren Fragen und Infragestellungen in Europa zur Vielfalt und Entwicklung der lexikographischen Praxis in Australien. Die Beiträge erfassen selektiv die Vielfalt der gesamtgesellschaftlich relevanten Funktionen: Das zweisprachige Wörterbuch und das Gebärdenwörterbuch dienen der Kommunikations- und Verständnissicherung über Sprach- und Kommunikationsgrenzen hinweg. Das kulturhistorische Wörterbuch öffnet den Zugang zu geschichtlichen Sprachwelten in ihren beschreibungszeitlichen Kulturbezügen. Das Fachwörterbuch hilft bei der präzisen Benutzung von Fachterminologie und unterstützt deren Vermittlung sowie den Wissenstransfer. Die Lexikographie ermöglicht sprachgesellschaftliche Selbstvergewisserung und Identitätsstiftung, ob im Fach, Slang oder im Dialekt, ob in einer lebendigen oder einer gerade vom Aussterben bedrohten Sprache. Für die Antipoden beider Erdteile ist dies ein lexikographischer, methodischer und metalexikographischer Gewinn.

The Cinepoetics book series aims at a theoretical and analytical reconceptualization of the discursivity of audiovisual images. The focus is not on the circulation of media representations but on the modes of this circulation: How do audiovisual images as figurations of media experience relate to other audiovisual images? What does it mean to describe different modes of audiovisual experience and recursivity as forms of cinematic thinking? From this perspective, the series’ volumes provide analyses of the aesthetic dimension, historical function and cultural significance of their subjects, making the poetic logic of audiovisual images accessible to an interdisciplinary audience.

The epigraphic database Clauss Slaby (EDCS) was founded and developed 40 years ago by Manfred Clauss and Wolfgang Slaby at the University of Eichstätt. Today, it is the largest and most important digital tool for epigraphic research worldwide, providing rapid digital access to more than 900,000 records, including more than 550,000 Latin and Greek inscriptions. This also includes information on the find sites and provinces, the publications, and photos of inscriptions and monuments. This platform, which is used to search for and find inscriptions, words, word fragments, formulaic phrases, expression variants and linguistic phenomena in inscriptions, has been counting over 10,000 users a day for several years now.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the database, epigraphers around the world were invited to share their new findings in this celebratory volume. The collection of essays by around 40 leading researchers covers epigraphic legacies from all major regions of the former Roman Empire, presenting new inscriptions, new readings or revisions of known texts, or new interpretations of controversial texts.

Language in Text and Discourse is an innovative state-of-the-art interdisciplinary series of monographs and edited collections that focus on cutting-edge linguistic studies at the interface between discourse and society including corpus approaches. This series is a forum for studies of language in interaction with other semiotic modes which address the question of how meanings are activated, remade or re-shaped within a variety of contexts and interactions, such as social or textual structures, places, styles, or discursive moments. These are considered to be resources for placemaking or positioning, which correlate and are indexically linked with repetitive semiotic patterns. Verbal and non-verbal positioning as well as conventionalised forms of patterning determine, construe and reflect historically variable concepts of social reality. This study examines ten Irish versions of Greek tragedy that have been written and produced between 1988 and 2019. Its focus is on the transformations that different formal elements of the Greek plays undergo in conjunction with the foregrounding of specific thematic fields. The study identifies a development over time regarding the topics that are foregrounded which can be conceptualized as a trajectory from the individual to the family and ultimately the surrounding community. The case studies in the chapters consider tragic mother figures and the relevance of peripeteia in the tragic plot, the tragic family of Antigone and Creon and the importance of dialogue in various types of renegotiations within the family, and lastly transformations of the Greek chorus to achieve a re-examination of the relationship between community and individual. The different chapters reveal different ways in which Greek tragedy has been creatively used to highlight existing tensions in Irish society, seriously engage with the suffering of different groups in society and overall to react to and participate in processes of social and cultural change.

["Rulings in Ecclesiastical Matters Since 1946"]
The collection of rulings publishes the administration of justice by governmental courts in the Federal Republic of Germany pertaining to the relationship of church and state, and also regarding further problems which are characterized by the relevance of religious concerns.

This volume collects contributions on the theme of prolepsis in Antiquity, Middle Ages, and Renaissance. As the interest in this topic grows, our goal is to provide a first attempt at adopting an all-encompassing approach, which thematizes prolepsis as a pivotal hermeneutic tool to “read” into different times and contexts. While the first section maintains a more traditional literary approach to the topic, the second section hosts a reflection on the relationship between prolepsis and kingship within historiographical accounts. The chapters of the third section revolve around a religious interpretation of prolepsis, creating an overview of theological practices and narrations connected to foreshadowing through time. Section four hosts chapters that differ significantly in their individual fields but share the common understanding of a practical application of prolepsis in the ancient Greek world, with a specific technical focus. The three essays of the fifth and final section explore entirely different conceptualizations, delving into alternative notions of prolepsis, combining approaches and maintaining a more methodological focus.

In this textbook the author brings back some of the ‘old’ astronomy, but viewed through the imaginary lens of huge telescopes and orbiting observatories. He teaches us what we can see in the sky without any instrument at all - with the only pre-requisite of access to a dark sky. We learn about lunar / solar eclipses and how contemporary cultures and ancient ancestors around the world discovered the sky.

Ancient fables have come down to us in many forms: They were published as fable collections both in prose and verse or embedded in literary works of other genres. The contributions to this volume shed light on the interaction between fables and these literary genres and give an overview of fables from early Greek to medieval literature. They seek to ask what role fables play in individual genres, and which genres in turn find an echo in fables.

In the case of fables embedded in other genres, the contributions ask as to which fables are chosen for which theme or genre and how they relate to it, how fables are adapted in other texts, how these embeddings are marked at a textual level, and what purpose they serve. In the case of other genres influencing fable collections, the volume illustrates how fables deal with the question of genre more generally but also with specific works or authors, how they approximate and, at the same time, distinguish themselves from these influences, what the aim of this approximation might be and through which means references to genres are made.

The 21 contributions by internationally renowned fable scholars provide, for the first time, an overview of the interaction of fables and other genres.

When the University of Halle-Wittenberg founded the Interdisciplinary Centre for European Enlightenment Studies in 1993, it was following the destiny of its history as a centre of the early Enlightenment in Germany which affected the whole of Europe. Research foci of the Centre are at the moment aesthetics, discourses of history, cultures of learning and erudition, university history and not least the wide field of early Enlightenment as a field of experimentation and the foundation of cultural models for the Modern Age.

The results of this research have been published since Autumn 1995 in the Centres’ research publications series entitled University of Halle Series on the European Enlightenment. In addition, there have been relevant works produced outside the Centre. Two to four volumes are published annually (monographs, collected volumes, commentaries on sources).

Medieval book ornament is a rapidly developing field of research. In the last decade, the various materials and techniques used to decorate medieval books, their different spaces and textures, their sensory qualities and semantics, and their significance in ritual or other performative contexts have reignited the interest of all disciplines concerned with the medieval book as a material object. Nevertheless, a comprehensive overview of the entire field is lacking. The Handbook of Medieval Book Ornament, creates a reference work, for both students and specialists, discussing the most important terms, topics, and currently discussed concepts related to ornament (in the broadest Middle Latin sense of "ornatus") in medieval book cultures. The focus is on book cultures in the Latin speaking world of Europe from 700 to 1500, including perspectives on Jewish, Islamic, Byzantine and vernacular book cultures and transcultural phenomena. It consists of 200 articles arranged in general themes such as Materials and Techniques, Topology, Sensory Effects, Usage and Pragmatics, Script, and Iconicity. All articles are written by the most renowned experts in the field and include a brief research bibliography, making the handbook an indispensable reference for anyone studying medieval books.

Universal health coverage (UHC) is a core part of the Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to ensure that everyone can access the health services they need without financial hardship.

Understanding the role and potential of health financing to achieve UHC in low and middle income countries (LMIC) is more important than ever. Many people still lack access to essential health services, and the incidence of catastrophic out-of-pocket payments has risen, particularly in LMICs. This growing burden has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, rising refugee numbers due to conflicts, the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, and cuts in aid budgets. As a result, there remain critical questions about how to sustainably, efficiently, and equitably finance UHC in the future.

This book brings together a team of authors and editors, predominantly from LMIC, to identify and analyse priority health financing issues in their respective countries and regions. It lays out key concepts, offers practical guidance, and provides empirical examples from a range of LMIC. The book covers the core health financing functions, including revenue generation, pooling, allocation, and payment mechanisms; monitoring and tracking health financing dimensions such as funding levels, equity, efficiency, and financial risk protection; and explores emerging challenges and opportunities in health financing, such as public financial management, fiscal space, governance, and political economy analysis.

This book is designed for students, researchers, and practitioners engaged in health financing, including those without a formal background in economics. It serves as a practical handbook, to equip readers with the tools to address health financing research and policy, and understand related challenges, in diverse LMIC contexts.

Eine der frömmigkeitsgeschichtlich signifikantesten Textgruppen des späten Mittelalters ist die sogenannte ‚frauenmystische‘ Literatur. Dieser Band wendet sich einem Aspekt der Texte zu, der in der Literaturwissenschaft bisher zwar passim immer wieder aufgegriffen, nicht jedoch systematisch untersucht worden ist: dem Raum. In diesem Band werden die Konstitution, die narrative Vermittlung und die komplexe Funktionalisierung räumlicher Strukturen in der ‚Frauenmystik‘ am Beispiel der Literatur des nahe Nürnberg gelegenen Dominikanerinnenklosters Engelthal beleuchtet. Im räumlichen Erzählen Engelthals werden theologische, liturgische sowie mystische Abstrakta und Imaginationen konkretisiert, dynamisiert und eng an das soziokulturelle Milieu der Dominikanerinnen angebunden. Die Texte evozieren in je individueller Gewichtung verschiedene räumliche Ebenen unterschiedlicher Extension und Tragweite, die zueinander in Beziehung gesetzt werden und miteinander interagieren. Hierin wird ein literarischer Überschuss vermutet, der über die reine Darstellung milieuspezifischer Lebensrealität hinausgeht: Es werden Prinzipien der Gottesbegegnung in beschreibbare Relations- und Interaktionsfelder übersetzt, wodurch die Texte als Literatur der mystischen Dimensionierung von Welt verstanden werden können.

The volume explores the ways in which the lottery was imagined in early modern and long eighteenth-century Europe. It presents a series of interconnected case studies from Denmark-Norway, the German-speaking areas, Britain, the Low Countries, France, Italy, and Spain, which bring into dialogue a wide range of materials: lottery tickets and advertisements, pamphlets and periodicals, visual art, popular songs, poetry, prose fiction and plays, political, moral, and judicial treatises.

The articles in this volume present research insights from the interdisciplinary University Research Priority Program (UFSP) ‘Digital Religion(s). Interaction, communication and transformation in the Digital Society’ (2021-2032). Seelsorge ist schon lange in medizinethische Fragestellungen involviert und beteiligt sich auch an ethischen Beratungsstrukturen in Kliniken. The expression “paradigm shift can be fruitfully applied to scholarship regarding religion to flesh out and highlight when and how the multiple disciplines of the broader field of religious studies found ways to change their own perspectives and the manner of defining, reading and analyzing the objects of their analyses.  The lectures deal with paradigm shifts that result from the positive or conflictual engagement with major historical events, the use of innovative theoretical lenses, the adoption of brand new or established technologies  or simply from renewed reading of religious sources often inspired by the results of academic research.

In literatursoziologischer Perspektive ist herausgearbeitet worden, dass Schriftsteller literarischen Gruppen beitreten, um über die Gruppenzugehörigkeit ihre soziale Identität zu entwickeln und zu stabilisieren. Derartige Fragen spielen in dem Band eine Rolle, in dem zunächst theoretische Konzepte von Freundschaft diskutiert werden, die von der Antike bis in die Gegenwart führen. In der deutschen Geschichte – aber nicht nur dort – gilt die Zeit zwischen 1750 bis 1850 als „große Epoche der Freundschaft". Entsprechend setzen die Fallstudien in der Romantik ein und führen in einem Teil mit Beiträgen zu ausgewählten Autoren über die Neue Sachlichkeit sowie die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus bis in der Literatur unmittelbar nach 1945. Schließlich geht es einerseits um Freundschaften im Umfeld der Gruppe 47 in der bundesdeutschen Literatur und andererseits um vergleichbare Entwicklungen in der DDR. Dabei rücken das Werk von Christa Wolf wie auch die von ihr über Jahrzehnte gepflegten Freundschaften ins Zentrum. Der letzte Teil des Bandes führt in die Literatur der Gegenwart und wendet sich insbesondere jugendlichen Protagonisten und den von ihnen realisierten Freundschaftsbeziehungen zu. Den Abschluss des Bandes bildet ein Gespräch mit Jan Faktor, in dem es neben der eigenen Poetologie auch um die Rolle von Freundschaft im Künstlerbiotop Prenzlauer Berg in der DDR der 1980er Jahre geht.

Gegenstand ist eine Theorie der Wortbildung im Rahmen der prozessualen Prototypentheorie und regelbasierten Konstruktionsgrammatik (Welke: De Gruyter 2019, Felfe, Höllein, Welke: De Gruyter 2024). Wortbildung wird als Wortabwandlung beschrieben, konstruktionsgrammatisch als Instantiierung spezifisch morphologischer Abwandlungsmuster. Es geht um eine prototypentheoretische Rekonstruktion der Herausbildung der Wortbildung aus der Syntax unter der Bedingung, dass die prototypentheoretische Rekonstruktion mit der Diachronie verträglich und durch diachrone Daten falsifizierbar ist.
Voraussetzung ist eine strikte Unterscheidung von Univerbierung und Wortabwandlung. Univerbierung ist das Zusammenwachsen von syntaktischen Konstruktionen (Wortgruppen) zu Wörtern, die in einer festen Reihenfolge unmittelbar zusammen vorkommen. Wortabwandlung und damit Wortbildung im engeren Sinne ist die Bildung neuer Wörter auf der Grundlage spezifisch morphologischer Muster und Regeln. Herausbildungen von Suffixen aus Endlauten von Wörtern sind in diesen Prozess einbezogen.
Unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Wortabwandlung ist Komposition die Abwandlung eines Wortes durch ein anderes Wort, d.h. die Abwandlung des Grundwortes durch das Bestimmungswort und in prototypischen Abwandlungen durch ein Quasiwort (Zusammenbildungen, Konfixkomposita, Phrasenkomposita). Derivation ist Wortabwandlung durch explizite Derivation (Suffigierung und Präfigierung) oder implizite Derivation.
Der starre, rein formale und ahistorische Kopf-Begriff der Generativen Grammatik wird aufgegeben. Im Bereich der Wortbildung ist der Kopf das Wort, das der Abwandlung zu Grunde liegt (die Basis der Abwandlung). Bei der Entstehung des Musters der Suffigierung aus dem Muster der Komposition kommt es zu einem Perspektivwechsel. Das Attribut und diesem entsprechend das Bestimmungswort des Kompositums wird zum Kopf der Suffigierung (zur Basis der Suffigierung, zum abzuwandelnden Wort). Der Kopf der syntaktischen Attribut-Konstruktion und das Grundwort des Kompositums wird zum Suffix. Das Suffix bewahrt mit der Festlegung der Wortart des gebildeten neuen Wortes grammatische Merkmale des ursprünglichen syntaktischen Kopfes. In diesem Zusammenhang wird der Begriff des Affixoids relevant.
Von ihren Ursprüngen aus ergibt sich eine Zweiteilung der Wortbildung in attributive und prädikative Wortbildung. Zur attributiven Wortbildung gehören Komposition und Suffigierung. Zur prädikativen Wortbildung gehört die Präfigierung (Bildung von Präfix- und Partikelverben).
An die Stelle einer synchronen Klassifikation nach invarianten Merkmalen tritt eine prototypentheoretische Klassifikation nach Ähnlichkeiten und Übergängen. Die Muster/Verfahren der Wortbildung, lassen sich auf diese Weise, begonnen bei ihrem Ursprung aus Syntax und Univerbierung, in eine plausible diachron interpretierbare Abfolge bringen.
An die Stelle einer denotativen (onomasiologischen) Auffassung von sprachlichen Inhalten (Bedeutungen von Komposita und Derivationen) tritt dem prototypentheoretischen und konstruktionsgrammatischen Ansatz entsprechend eine formbezogene signifikative (semasiologische) Auffassung der Semantik. Die Bedeutungen der neuen abgewandelten Wörter entstehen aus generellen und partikulären Implikaturen.

Der Band enthält kommentierende Aufsätze zum gesamten Text von Kants Schrift „Über den Gemeinspruch: Das mag in der Theorie richtig sein, taugt aber nicht für die Praxis“ (1793) sowie zu deren Rezeption. In dieser kleinen Schrift verteidigt Kant nicht nur seine Moralphilosophie gegen Einwände seiner Zeitgenossen, sondern publiziert auch seinen ersten Text zur Rechtstheorie. Ihr kommt damit eine besondere Stellung für ein angemessenes Verständnis sowohl des Gehalts als auch der Entwicklung von Kants Überlegungen zu Moral und Recht zu. Die Beiträge kommentieren Kants Überlegungen vor dem Hintergrund zeitgenössischer Diskussionen und präsentieren ihren sachlichen Gehalt unter Berücksichtigung der anderen kritischen Schriften Kants. Da der Gemeinspruch-Aufsatz nach seinem Erscheinen zudem der Ausgangspunkt für weitere kritische Diskussionen um das Verhältnis ‚Theorie und Praxis‘, besonders von Rechtstheorie und politischem Handeln, war, thematisieren zwei weitere Aufsätze die Reaktionen von Friedrich Gentz und August Wilhelm Rehberg. Damit schließt der Band eine Lücke in der Kant-Interpretation und rückt einen Text in den Fokus, der in einzigartiger Weise wesentliche Hinweise für eine angemessene Einschätzung von Kants Moral-, Rechts- und Geschichtsphilosophie bereithält.

The idea of philosophy as science expands throughout 19th century philosophy; first instantiated by German Idealism’s systems in the shape of absolute science which start from pure subjectivity to further gather deductively the entire world under its categories. This idea is later found within the works of Franz Brentano in the form of philosophy as inductive science that has to work according to the method of natural sciences. However, despite this methodological commitment, Brentano did not give up the metaphysical dimension of philosophical research and accepted natural theology as philosophical science. In this way, his inductive-scientific philosophy is fundamentally different from Comte’s and Mill’s positive philosophy, which purposely bracketed metaphysical problems in order to focus upon the constant relations of phenomena. Within this framework, the volume starts from Brentano’s conception of philosophy as science and aims to analyze the source of this idea in Mill and Comte, its criticism and further development by Marty, Stumpf, Meinong,Twardowski, and Husserl, and also the alternative competing views on the topic of Reinhold, Hegel, Schelling, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Paulsen, and Dilthey.

Methods for solving problems of mathematical physics can be divided into the following four classes.

Analytical methods (the method of separation of variables, the method of characteristics, the method of Green's functions, etc.) methods have a relatively low degree of universality, i.e. focused on solving rather narrow classes of problems.

Approximate analytical methods (projection, variational methods, small parameter method, operational methods, various iterative methods) are more versatile than analytical ones.

Numerical methods (finite difference method, direct method, control volume method, finite element method, etc.) are very universal methods.

Probabilistic methods (Monte Carlo methods) are highly versatile. Can be used to calculate discontinuous solutions. However, they require large amounts of calculations and, as a rule, they lose with the computational complexity of the above methods when solving such problems to which these methods are applicable.

Comparing methods for solving problems of mathematical physics, it is impossible to give unconditional primacy to any of them. Any of them may be the best for solving problems of a certain class.

The proposed method of moving nodes for boundary value problems of differential equations combines a combination of numerical and analytical methods. In this case, we can obtain, on the one hand, an approximately analytical solution of the problem, which is not related to the methods listed above. On the other hand, this method allows one to obtain compact discrete approximations of the original problem. Note that obtaining an approximately analytical solution of differential equations is based on numerical methods. The nature of numerical methods also allows obtaining an approximate analytical expression for solving differential equations

In honor of the writings of Giulio Busi, scholar of Jewish culture, the book investigates from a multidisciplinary perspective the extraordinary richness of Jewish culture in the Diaspora from antiquity to the latter part of the 20th century. This book offers an alternative reading of Silius Italicus’ Punica against the political and literary backdrop of Nero’s reign—one of the most underexplored areas in Flavian scholarship. Although Silius is no longer dismissed for his lack of originality or reduced to a nostalgic imitator of Vergil, readers have yet to fully grasp the subtle implications of his self-conscious engagement in a constructive dialogue with the imperial present. As a result, they often misinterpret the Punica as an epic firmly rooted in the Flavian era, overlooking or downplaying Silius’ multifaceted “belatedness” as a man who lived under twelve emperors and witnessed firsthand Nero’s downfall and its aftermath.

Nevertheless, the primary goal of this monography is not to challenge the “official dating” of the poem’s composition—though it does raise legitimate questions about its status as an “exclusive product” of Flavian Rome. Instead, its central premise is that the Punica should not merely be seen as a historical epic linking Rome’s distant past to its imperial present but rather as a fundamentally political poem that reflects Silius’ “imperial anxieties”—anxieties rooted in Nero’s reign and persisting beyond his fall.

Given a proliferation of crises from climate change, public health emergencies, and new threats of global war, engaging the future and probing new conjunctures of inquiry is becoming increasingly urgent. This volume enlists the cultural imagination and the study of culture specifically, asking how they can contribute to ‘bouncing forward’ from a sometimes overwhelming sense of constant change and uncertainty, rather than ‘bouncing back’ to some previous status quo as in conventional resilience-thinking. How do future concerns mobilize transformations with regard to objects of study, critical methodologies, new forms of interdisciplinarity, or questions of research and/as activism?

With a conceptual focus on narrativity, scenarios, and transformations in the study of culture, the volume addresses this question through a variety of productive lenses such as resilience-thinking, ‘imagineering’, or notions of time and risk criticism. In essence, the volume takes a two-pronged approach, demonstrating 1) how future narratives, scenarios, and transformations figure within various research objects and 2) how future challenges prompt a rethinking and recalibration of (new) conceptual and methodological apparatuses in the study of culture.

Ziel des Buches ist es, die stadtrömische Liebeselegie mit Properz und Ovid, die Epigramme Martials sowie pompejanische Liebes- und Sexgraffiti daraufhin zu befragen, wie sie den Zusammenhang von städtischem Raum und (Liebes-)Gefühl konzipieren. Damit verbindet sich die weiterführende Frage, in welchen Zusammenhängen in den Texten eine kollektiv verbindliche Vorstellung von der adäquaten emotionalen Aneignung des Stadtraums zum Tragen kommt und wann es um die Konstruktion und Inszenierung von unterschiedlichen, gar divergierenden Aneignungsformen geht. Die Analyse operiert somit an den Fachgrenzen von Klassischer Archäologie, Alter Geschichte (Epigraphik) und Klassischer Philologie, um auf diese Weise einen neuen Blick das antike Rom und Pompeji als Gefühlsräume zu werfen.

Marie Neurath (1898-1986) was an illustrator and graphic designer who, from the mid-1940s to the late 1960s, created innovative non-fiction books for children. Together with her husband, politician and philosopher Otto Neurath (1882-1945), and artist and designer Gerd Arntz (1900-1988), she developed a method of visual representation in 1920s Vienna that became known as Isotype (International System of Typographic Picture Education). Influenced by the progressive ideas of the Vienna Circle, Isotype was intended to contribute to the democratization of knowledge. To this end, the Neuraths and their team created a special form of pictorial statistics that meant to make complex scientific relationships accessible to the layperson. In the postwar period, Marie Neurath developed several series of informative picturebooks for children that incorporated and further developed the Isotype principles. Although these picturebooks were hugely successful in their time, international picturebook research has barely acknowledged Marie Neurath’s legacy. This anthology is the first to elaborate Marie Neurath’s achievement as a transformer of knowledge for children and to analyze her distinctive, groundbreaking graphic method.

Millennium transcends boundaries – between epochs and regions, and between disciplines. Like the journal Millennium-Jahrbuch, the Millennium-Studien pursues an international, interdisciplinary approach that cuts across historical eras. The editorial and the advisory board represent a broad spectrum of disciplines: contributions from the fields of art and literature are just as well represented as historical, theological and philosophical contributions, and studies on Latin and Greek cultures as well as North African and Near Eastern cultures.

In addition to offering a forum for monographs and edited collections on diverse topics, Millennium-Studien publishes commentaries and editions. Publication languages are primarily German and English; French, Italian and Spanish studies may be included.

Die im Jahre 1905 von Gustav Gröber ins Leben gerufene Reihe der Beihefte zur Zeitschrift für romanische Philologie zählt zu den renommiertesten Fachpublikationen der Romanistik. Die Beihefte pflegen ein gesamtromanisches Profil, das neben den Nationalsprachen auch die weniger im Fokus stehenden romanischen Sprachen mit einschließt.

First-hand information complemented by thoroughly researched editorial entries - this is the formula behind the singularly exhaustive survey of more than 75,000 scholars currently working in academic institutions throughout German-speaking countries. Entries comprise relevant biographical data, addresses, details on fields of research and work, as well as a selected bibliography. The appendix of the printed edition includes a necrology, a subject index, and a calendar listing special birthdays.

The online edition can be ordered independently. It is updated constantly and allows targeted searching for criteria such as field of work etc. In addition to the printed edition it provides information regarding more than 12,000 academics which have been reported as deceased since 1996 as well as more than 20,000 archived entries no longer included in the printed edition.

Swedish computational lexicography has a long history at the University of Gothenburg, both in its primary role as a central aspect of the scientific study of vocabulary and also as an infrastructural component for conducting research based on language data. Starting in the 1960s, the Språkdata research group pioneered corpus-supported lexicography for Swedish, forming the basis for successive editions of two main descriptive dictionaries of contemporary Swedish, SAOL and SO. Language technological lexical resources for Swedish have been developed by the research unit/research infrastructure Språkbanken Text since the turn of the millennium, most recently in the framework of the Swedish FrameNet++ initiative. After two decades of separation, these two largely mutually independently developed strands of computational lexicography have now joined forces under the umbrella of Språkbanken’s lexical research infrastructure to advance the field technically, methodologically, and scientifically. The result is a vibrant and multifaceted research environment intertwined with and supported by a closely integrated cutting-edge computational infrastructure for working with lexical data

Spanning all areas of Humanities and Social Sciences and including interdisciplinary and comparative approaches, the book series Research in Latin American Jewish Studies (RLAJS) aims to push the boundaries of Jewish studies in general and Latin American Jewish studies in particular. It emphasizes the development of innovative methodologies while also mobilizing the richness of Jewish thought as a wellspring for a new epistemology. In De iusta haereticorum punitione, the Franciscan Alfonso de Castro (1498–1558) issues a cautionary note about heresy, likening it to a "pestilential" force. He emphasizes its pervasive spread and the ensuing difficulty in curing it. Indeed, in his heresiological treatises medical language abounds, with the ongoing metaphor likening the process of addressing heresy to a healing process.

This volume explores the concept of social disease in Hispanic heresiography and medical literature. Individual contributions delve into the clinical paradigm shaping views on heresy, the humoral profile of the heretic, and the connections between heresy, melancholy, pestilence, and sedition. Methodologically, it employs conceptual history, critical semantics, and metaphorology.

The book proposes analysis of the history and conceptual mapping of heresy in the sixteenth century as well as an examination of the epistemological metaphors of heresy and dissent. It also aims to map the literary production of physicians in early modern Spain and their tendency towards religious heterodoxy. Il volume propone una ricostruzione della storia testuale degli Epigrammaton libri di Marziale. L’analisi si sviluppa a ritroso, procedendo dagli interventi sul testo più recenti ai più antichi, per arrivare alle varianti che potrebbero, forse, essere dovute all’intervento dell’autore medesimo.

La prima parte del volume (Il testo, gli editori, i copisti) ha come oggetto le varianti testuali riconducibili al processo di trasmissione manoscritta o alla fisionomia testuale di ciascuna delle tre recensioni tardoantiche a monte della tradizione.

La seconda parte (Il testo, il poeta, il pubblico), a partire da una ricostruzione delle modalità di composizione e circolazione del testo, offre una panoramica dei casi – che sono, per forza di cose, quelli di più ardua interpretazione – in cui le varianti testuali potrebbero essere nate nelle primissime fasi della storia dell’opera.

This book investigates why government instability is particularly evident in Italy compared to other European political systems. It focuses on three main dimensions. Firstly, it examines the historical, institutional, and social roots of instability by providing insights into the sources of instability, from the country’s constitutional architecture to the lack of social and political cohesion produced by a difficult unification process. Secondly, leveraging an original multilevel dataset, the book performs an in-depth analysis of the nexus between instability and policymaking accountability, and a quantitative empirical analysis to identify factors increasing the risk of cabinet termination. This Handbook of Poetic Forms aims to offer historically informed approaches to a wide variety of poetic forms. A particular emphasis will be on considering poetic form in dialogue with the cultural context in which it is being used, as well as within the literary tradition of each form, and to explore the stable as well as the historically variable affordances of each form in such contexts. Hereby, the focus lies on prescriptive forms, that is, on poetic forms which are defined by or at least associated with specific metrical, stanzaic or overall structures (or the absence of such), rather than poetic genres that are primarily characterised by similarities in subject matter (like the elegy or the ode). While this Handbook should be accessible to students, its aim is not to offer basic introductions, but rather to broaden a historical and functional understanding of the poetic forms it covers, and to engage with poetic forms not as givens, but as historically-contingent processes of formation. Above all, this Handbook’s formalism is new formalist in emphasising historical awareness and contextualisation.

This volume presents, for the first time, a critical edition of a highly unusual Byzantine text: the Metaphrase – or intralingual translation – of the early 13th-century History (Chronike Diegesis) of Niketas Choniates. The original History of Choniates has always been considered a monument of Byzantine historical and rhetorical discourse. Its highly learned, Atticizing style of Greek, however, frequently made it obscure to readers, even in the Byzantine period. As a result, in the second quarter of the 14th century, probably in Constantinople, an individual or group of individuals undertook to transpose the entire work into a simpler register of Greek, closer to the everyday language of the period. Accordingly, the text as published here brings to light a major body of primary linguistic material, enabling scholars in the field to judge for themselves the nature and extent of the linguistic and stylistic enterprise represented by the Metaphrase. The introductory matter and accompanying analysis provide background information on the manuscript tradition of the Metaphrase, as well as an assessment of its linguistic and cultural context and genesis.

Welche Rolle spielt die Fotografie für die Konstruktion und die Bewahrung religiöser Identitäten und Glaubensvorstellungen? Aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive gehen die Beiträge des Buches dieser Frage nach und befassen sich mit der theologischen Rezeption von Fotografie, ihrem Einsatz in künstlerischen und in feierlichen Kontexten sowie der materiellen Beschaffenheit von Fotografien als Objekte der Andacht oder als kulturelle Artefakte. Als Vorläuferinstitution der heutigen EKD war die Eisenacher Konferenz im 19. Jahrhundert das einzige rechtliche Band zwischen den neu entstandenen deutschen evangelischen Landeskirchen. Da sie die theologische Aussöhnung der getrennten evangelischen Bekenntnisse nicht in Angriff nahm und ein engerer rechtlicher Zusammenschluss der beteiligten Landeskirchen bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts nicht gelang, gilt die Eisenacher Konferenz bis auf Annäherungen in Fragen wie der Vereinheitlichung des Kirchenbaus oder der Predigttexte allgemein als gescheitert und ist theologisch bisher unerforscht. Ihr Wirken wird in diesem Buch aufgrund der Quellen erstmals umfassend und anhand ihrer Strukturen, Akteure und Themen untersucht und in einem umfangreichen Anhang übersichtlich dokumentiert. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die Arbeitsweisen der Eisenacher Konferenz ihr auf den verschiedensten Feldern des kirchlichen Lebens in direkter und indirekter Auseinandersetzung mit den zeitgenössischen Entwicklungen auf staatlichem Gebiet für ihre Zeit wichtige Weichenstellungen auf dem Weg zur modernen Volkskirche ermöglichten.

The first Holocaust monuments were created shortly after the end of the Second World War. At first, they were monuments and memorials commemorating Jewish victims, but later, stone reminders of the Roma victims of the Holocaust were added. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, a second wave of Holocaust monuments and memorials took place in Central Europe, continuing to this day. The aim of this publication is to present both the historical and artistic circumstances of the creation of these Holocaust monuments and memorials, as well as their subsequent reception. In a broader social and cultural context, the emphasis is placed on the formation of Jewish and Roma identity in Central Europe.

Against highly current debates on multilingual literary production, this original study of the acclaimed contemporary poet-translator Uljana Wolf considers how lyric verse is being creatively revitalised through experimental practices across languages, genres and media. Based in Berlin and New York, Wolf is concerned to explore and contest political and linguistic borders through poetry and translation as a poetic practice. Despite considerable critical acclaim, Wolf’s writing has not yet formed the subject of any book-length study, likely due to its radical form and resistance to straightforward categorisations. This English-language volume will form the first published collection dedicated to Wolf’s oeuvre and ensure that her work is made accessible to the increasing numbers of scholars and students working on multilingual literature. Original contributions by Wolf and her translators will consolidate the volume’s status as a landmark intervention concerned to trace the aesthetics and politics of Wolf’s linguistic and formal experiments. Im vorliegenden Text wird die Frage untersucht, ob Pflichten gegen sich selbst moralische Relevanz haben oder, so Habermas, nur als pragmatische Pflichten gelten, da sie lediglich das Interesse der Subjekte betreffen. Die Analyse von Kants Pflichten gegen sich selbst verläuft anhand seiner Moralphilosophie sowie einer Rekonstruktion des naturrechtlichen Ursprungs dieser Pflichten und ihrer Verbindung mit den subjektiven Rechten. Zuletzt wird die Aktualität dieser Pflichten für die zeitgenössische Ethik behandelt. Dafür ist die Interpretation von Adorno, der diese Pflichten und Kants Moral als Ausdruck des Widerstandes des Subjektes gegenüber der Gesellschaft liest, wesentlich. Durch Adornos Interpretation erfasst die Autorin die Pflichten gegen sich selbst als Teil der persönlichen Integrität und des Widerstandes gegenüber der von der Gesellschaft erzwungenen Heteronomie. Dadurch erhalten diese Pflichten nicht nur für die Moral, sondern auch für die Politik Relevanz. Einerseits bezeichnen diese Pflichten in Kants Philosophie die grundlegende Tätigkeit des autonomen Subjektes bei der Entstehung von Moral. Andererseits schützen diese Pflichten die Interessen der Subjekte, die nicht immer mit denen der Kollektivität identisch sind.

Darf eine Überflußgesellschaft Gesundheit rationieren, gleichzeitig aber auf ein Recht auf ein Wunschkind bestehen? Darf man im Namen des Klimaschutzes gegen geltendes Recht verstoßen? Diese und viele andere hochbrisante, zugleich heftig umstrittene Fragen behandelt Otfried Höffe in dieser Aufsatzsammlung, und zwar sowohl aus der Perspektive des Moralphilosophen als auch aus jener eines gewöhnlichen Bürgers.

The book reconstructs in detail the genesis of Schopenhauers philosophy and its aporias.

It is divided into four parts. The first part concerns the pietistic education of the young Schopenhauer and his meeting with philosophy through the courses of G.E. Schulze and the study of Plato, Schelling and Kant. Oppressed by the "negative" results of Kant's criticism (unknowability of the thing in itself), the young Schopenhauer first confronts himself with Fichte and Schelling (second part of the volume). But these two philosophers, in his opinion, rather than maintaining and developing the results of Kant, actually end up abandoning them. Nevertheless he tacitly inherits some nodal points from Fichte und Schelling.

The third part concerns his first attempt to elaborate a new post-Kantian metaphysics: the theory of „better consciousness".

In the fourth part it is shown how the internal contradictions of that theory and the decisive encounter with Indian wisdom (Hinduism and Buddhism) lead him to abandon his first attempt at system and to build his metaphysics of will.

In the last chapter of the book, the most substantial, the author faces the aporias of Schopenhauer’s mature system starting from the genetic perspective.

While the Cobordism Hypothesis provides a translation between topological and categorical structures, the subject of fusion categories arising from representations of finite groups has shown the need for a robust theory of duality in monoidal 2-categories. This book intertwines 3-dimensional category theory with enriched and symmetric monoidal 2-categories to present a comprehensive foundation for duals in dimension two. This framework is presented using wire diagrams, a typographical tool that combines the geometric appeal of ordinary string diagrams with the clarity of standard commutative diagrams in category theory.  Chapters on enriched 2-categories, closed 2-categories, and compact closed 2-categories build the theory from the ground up and in full detail. Exilé aux Etats-Unis pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le linguiste Roman Jakobson (1896–1982) intègre une école française créée par des savants exilés : l’Ecole Libre des Hautes Études. Dieser Band befasst sich mit Formen und Funktionen der Krise in Michel Houellebecqs Erzählprosa. Trotz der Omnipräsenz sowohl individueller als auch kollektiver Krisen im Werk des Gegenwartsschriftstellers wurde der herausragenden Relevanz des Krisenbegriffs für Houellebecqs Romane bislang kaum Beachtung geschenkt.

Die vorliegende Studie schließt diese Forschungslücke, indem sie die Krise bei Houellebecq nicht lediglich als ein inhaltliches Motiv identifiziert, sondern darüber hinaus zwei grundlegende Funktionen der Krise herausarbeitet: Erstens entwickelt sie ein krisennarratologisches Analysemodell, mit dem sich die Krise als ein auch strukturell in Houellebecqs Romanen verankertes Erzählmuster darstellen lässt. Darauf basierend wird die Krise zweitens als eine spezifische Form von Zeitdiagnose untersucht, mit der Houellebecq an dekadente Krisendiskurse des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts anknüpft und diese zur depressionistischen Zeitdiagnose einer Postmodernen Dekadenz radikalisiert.

Anhand des Krisenbegriffs lassen sich folglich Aussagen über Houellebecqs ambivalente Stellung zwischen Moderne und Postmoderne treffen und zugleich Rückschlüsse auf mögliche Gründe der oftmals kontroversen Rezeption von Houellebecqs Romanen ziehen.

Science and technology were a source of power to Julio-Claudian emperors: professions of knowledge, discernment, and mastery of them enabled emperors to delight, entertain, awe, and even terrify their subjects. Early modern historians have explored the ways in which various European rulers employed intellectualism, specifically an interest in science and technology, as part of their personas. This book demonstrates that Roman emperors anticipated them by over a millennium. Intellectualism was not a pet interest among individual scholarly rulers, but rather a consistent feature of the emerging imperial persona of the first century CE that should be considered alongside other long-recognized sources of power, such as military prowess, physical strength, and arrogation of reverend status. Making new use of familiar texts (including the narrative accounts of historian Tacitus and the biographies of Suetonius), along with less read works (such as the Elder Pliny’s encyclopedia and Phlegon of Tralles’ paradoxography), Learned Emperors examines the intersections of science, technology, and the practice of power to propose a fresh notion of what a Roman emperor was—or professed to be.
