Grafiken, Diagramme, Schemata nehmen in der Linguistik wichtige Funktionen ein: Sie visualisieren Analyseergebnisse, verdeutlichen komplexe theoretische Konzepte oder ermöglichen überhaupt erst die Analyse von Daten. Es handelt sich dabei um Achsendiagramme, Netze, Listen, Karten und viele weitere Formen. Doch wie beeinflussen sie die Entstehung von wissenschaftlichen Tatsachen? In welche Handlungen sind sie eingebunden und welche Effekte haben sie auf sprachliche Daten? Wie ermöglichen Sie Transformationen von Daten, um neue Erkenntnisse zu gewinnen? Das Buch untersucht diagrammatische Praktiken in der Sprachwissenschaft sowohl aus historischer als auch technischer Sicht und zeigt die Einbettung dieser Praktiken in Diagrammkulturen und „Coding Cultures“. Die Vielfalt der Diagramme wird auf fünf diagrammatische Grundfiguren zurückgeführt, deren spezifischen Funktionen und Effekte analysiert werden. Semiotisch und wissenschaftstheoretisch unterfüttert wird sodann eine Methodologie der Visuellen Linguistik entwickelt.

Hermann Zapf (1918–2015) gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Schriftgestalter, Kalligraphen und Typographen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sein Werk überspannt mehr als sieben Jahrzehnte, in denen er Schriftklassiker wie Palatino, Optima und Zapfino vorgelegt hat. Daneben war Zapf als Buchgestalter, Berater, Dozent, Unternehmer, Künstler und Aktivist in Urheberrechtsfragen tätig. Die vorliegende Studie nähert sich diesem Werk auf Basis des umfassenden, an der der Herzog August Bibliothek verwahrten Eigenarchivs des Gestalters.

Untersuchungsleitend ist ein feldtheoretisches Konzept von Gestaltung, das Fragen zu Entwurfstechniken und dem Einfluss von Satztechnologien aufwirft, aber auch nach der Entstehung von Zapfs Ansehen und dem Aufbau seines Beziehungsnetzwerks. Durch die Verortung Zapfs im Kontext seiner Zeitgenossen wird mit dieser Werkbiografie ein Schlaglicht auf die Typographie der 2. Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts geworfen.

Venedig gilt weithin als die Stadt der Malerei. In engstem Bezug zu ihr entstanden vom 15. Jahrhundert bis zum Ende der Serenissima 1797, signifikante Meisterwerke der Zeichenkunst und Druckgraphik. Ihnen ist der Band zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung exklusiv gewidmet. Zeichnungen führen in das Ideen-Laboratorium wegweisender venezianischer Künstler von den Bellini über Lorenzo Lotto, Tintoretto und Veronese bis zu Guardi und Fontebasso. Tizian zeichnete packende Kompositionen für Holzschnitt und Kupferstich, und Tiepolos Werk vollendet sich in rätselhaften Radierungen von ergreifendem Tiefgang. Radierte Blätter von Marieschi und Canaletto prägen bis heute unsere poetischen Vorstellungen von der Atmosphäre und den besonderen Lebensumständen in dieser unvergleichlichen Stadt in mezzo al mare.

This extensive work dedicated to the unique textile art of Bhutan is an impressive illustration of how closely art, spirituality, and life are interwoven in the last of the Buddhist kingdoms in the Himalayas. It gives new insight into Bhutanese cosmology, worldview, culture, and society, which is associated with a variety of historical, philosophical, religious, social, and artistic perspectives.

The remote mountain location, low-key foreign policy, and basic principles of Buddhism has made it possible for Bhutan, the last of the Buddhist kingdoms in the Himalayas, to preserve a remarkable form of textile art that is interwoven with all aspects of life.

Karin Altmann shows us Bhutan textiles in their diversity: they are clothes and everyday objects, currency and commodity, mark important events as gifts during life, and are testament to the social status of a person. But they are also an integral aspect of religious festivals, dances, and rituals that provide insight into the mystical and religious beliefs of the Bhutanese people, and reflect the concept of gender in Bhutanese society. The book also tells the story of a country that is searching for a sensitive balance between tradition and progress in a globalized world.

Zeichnen und Schreiben: In dem vorliegenden Buch greifen zwei Ausdrucksformen ineinander. Ein Zyklus von Bleistiftzeichnungen bildet die Grundlage: karge Landschaftsfragmente, feine Porträts, grob umrissene, tänzerische Figuren.　

Darüber hinaus sind handschriftliche Notizen eng mit dem Gezeichneten verwoben. Oft markiert das Schreiben die erste Berührung des Zeichenstifts mit dem Papier. Vieles bleibt unleserlich, ist überzeichnet. Aber der Betrachter möchte wissen, was da steht, wie die Verschmelzung von Schrift und Zeichnung zu verstehen ist.

Gegliedert in autarke Kapitel werden die rätselhaften Texte zu einer eigenen, unverzichtbaren Ebene des Gesamtprojekts. Die Bilder illustrieren nicht, sie erweitern die Sprache, und diese erklärt nicht, sondern bietet eine Möglichkeit, den Vorgang des Zeichnens nachzuvollziehen

Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) führte die Bildmedien Kupferstich und Holzschnitt zu einer koloristischen Qualität, die es in der Druckgrafik bis dahin nicht gegeben hatte. Die unter ihm geschaffenen Leistungen druckgrafischer Interpretation von Malerei markieren einen Wendepunkt für die gesamte weitere Entwicklung des Bilddrucks. Im Mittelpunkt des vorliegenden Buches steht in exemplarischer Auswahl die Analyse der einzelnen Schritte druckgrafischer Produktion, die unter der Aufsicht von Rubens nach dessen Gemälden geschaffen wurde. Das Spektrum umfasst – neben den Holzschnitten und Kupferstichen selbst – Ölskizzen, Gemälde, Zeichnungen, modelli und korrigierte Probedrucke. Das Buch folgt den Bänden zur französischen und italienischen Druckgrafik wird von einem umfänglichen themenbezogenen Quellenteil flankiert.
